SIR Alex Ferguson was today handed a four-match touchline ban for his comments about referee Alan Wiley after Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Sunderland.
Two of the matches will be suspended until the end of next season, while United boss Ferguson was also given a £20,000 fine by an FA regularity commission for suggesting Wiley was “just wasn't fit enough” to officiate in the Barclays Premier League after last month's game.
Peter Griffiths QC, who chaired the commission, said: “Each member of the commission recognised Sir Alex Ferguson's achievements and stature within the game.
“Having said that, it was made clear to Sir Alex that with such stature comes increased responsibilities.
Grossly improper
“The commission considered his admitted remarks, in the context in which they were made, were not just improper but were grossly improper and wholly inappropriate.
“He should never have said what he did say.”
The additional two-match ban will be activated if Ferguson is found guilty of a similar offence before the end of next season.
Ferguson had admitted the charge of improper conduct and apologised to Wiley in the wake of strong opinion his comments had served to undermine the FA's 'Respect' campaign.
However, the Scot maintained his assertion that the fitness of referees in the Premier League remained an issue to be discussed.
“I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment that my remarks may have caused and to the FA for going public with my views,” Ferguson said at the time via the club's website.
“My only intention in speaking publicly was to highlight what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game, namely that the fitness levels of referees must match the ever-increasing demands of the modern game, which I hope will now be properly addressed through the appropriate formal channels.”
Ferguson continued to be outspoken in his comments about referees even after attracting the FA charge.
Following his side's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool last month, Ferguson questioned whether Andre Marriner, who took charge of the game at Anfield, had the required experience for a match of such significance.
He also accused Martin Atkinson of being in an “absolutely ridiculous” position when he awarded Chelsea the free-kick that led to their winner against United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The FA have brought the game into disrepute! Where's the respect for referees?

So free reign for all those who haven't won what SAF has and for those who are still wet behind the ears in management terms - they can't have one rule for one...

He should have been tarred and feathered or put in the stocks and had packets of bacon thrown at him.
There is no justice in this world.

True there isnt, if there was referee's wouldn't get away with poor displays which cost teams games. Especially when evidence is clearly available of such incidents via television. In some cases referee's wouldn't need replays if they'd just get into decent positions to get a good view.

Where's the respect for the game? Why should referee's get 100% respect when they make some terrible decisions. Such decisions could cost teams alot of money, for example teams at the lower end of the table, one mistake could send a team down a division. Yet the referee's get away with it.

The only area where he cant should be on a referees integrity. In the past some of SAF's comments have been near this
line but not this time.
We,as fans, are entitled to know his opinion even if,on this occasion, the statistics did not support him but then again
"lies,damn lies and statistics!"

An intelligent response, mate but you need to know it's a debate stopper because the Berties can't handle intelligent replies.

Brilliant mate!! Couldn't have put it better myself fella. In the case of most things in life you cannot generalise, as is the case with supporters of most football clubs. You know...we all have good and bad. However, Citeh fans all seem to be the same....bitter & twisted yeah! Must be a horrible place to be, mind you i guess all those trophy free years must be hard to take...:-)

What a disgrace Stretford is; smashing up Barnsley, singing over the 1 minute silence, assaulting fans, invading the pitch, abusing officials, and inciting fans. Glad it will be over soon. Tick tock.

Yes he is.
Now please answer me this,do you recall when a certain Peter Swales and his ex-business partner Noel White both served on the FA committee at the same time?
Whaley Bridge cynic. (12/11/2009 at 15:29)
I'll give you an intelligent reply. Fergie was right to question the fitness of Alan Wiley. I made the same point five years ago when Wiley sent off Van Buyten at Elland Road and awarded a penalty to Leeds, despite the fair tackle arriving two yards outside the area. City could have been relegated thanks to that stupid decision.
For my thanks, I was called a Bitter Blue by the same people who are now defending their Manager.
Now the boot's on the other foot. We've all been robbed on occasions and we can all manipulate to further our arguement.
Spare us the siege mentality. Malcolm Allison was once banned for a Season. More recently Neil Warnock received a six match ban. Dave Basset was always getting banned. Benitez and Wenger both moan, but neither was caught laughing and joking with the same referee three weeks earlier.
