Sir Alex Ferguson sent for new dad Rooney with his side trailing 3-1 to CSKA Moscow.
And the England striker didn't disappoint - inspiring a memorable comeback as late goals from Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia's deflected strike secured a 3-3 draw and qualification.
Ferguson admitted he was left with no choice but to send on Roomey, whose wife, Coleen, gave birth to a son, Kai, this week.
Ferguson said: "He's not had much sleep and that is crucial for players at this level. But their third goal forced my hand. I would have preferred to have left him on the bench, but his energy and confidence were very high and that makes an impact."
Reds full-back Patrice Evra said: “It is great for Wayne being a father. It makes you more mature.
“He sent me photos straightaway by text and he is obviously very happy. It was clear he wanted to play and celebrate with a goal.”
The Russians had silenced Old Trafford with goals from Alan Dzagoev, Milos Krasic and Vasili Berezutski firing them into a 3-1 lead just after half-time, with Michael Owen on the score sheet for United.
But after Rooney's introduction Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia, via a 90th-minute deflection took United through to the knock-out stages.

Oh Lee, just let him go.

It beggars belief. The player won't go to Madrid, ever, and Barca don't need another striker. So he is prime for a move to england.
If we let Chelsea get him, we will regret it for a decade.

United are not firing on all cylinders at the moment and Fegie does not seem to know his best team, we need to get a settled midfield and we baddly need an enforcer like Hargreaves in the team.
Midfield General (04/11/2009 at 10:59)
I think it is clear we need a top keeper. Akinfeev has had some big dips in form recently. but he showed last night he is a superb shot stopper. He may be the best option around, so get your money out Malcolm!! 20, maybe 25 will do it. Line it up for next Summer, get the deal sorted now please. Again, if we let someone else sign him we will regret it.
And please, sell Nani. Obertan keeps it simple, and is so much more effective as a result. He looks for the pass and one-two immedaitely, whereas Nani has to try and beat a man first, every effing time. He usually fails to beat his man, turns back and plays it backwards to his full back. This slows down the move and means his contribution is negative.

Scholesy passed me the ball..., England (04/11/2009 at 11:35)
Same if not better judging by his early season goal return.

His ball retention at the moment is dire and he can't seem to pass for toffee. He seems to keep going for that Hollywood ball when the simple pass is the right option. As I say, his decision-making is all over the shop.
Also, where is that fire he has? It has been along time since I have seen him chasing down fallbacks and pressurising the ball.
The lad is top draw (although not in the class of a Torres), and I love his attitude, but that attitude seems to have wavered of late. The fact Berba always gets a panning is also a bit disappointing, especially when those around him aren't up to the mark.
Many on here seem to make their minds up on players (like the press) and no matter what they do, there opinions do not change. In the eyes of many Rooney can do no wrong, and Berba will always be a failure. I seem to remember a certain Ronaldo getting the same sort of treatment. That man was a league above anything we have had at United for years, and although not deemed a failure, he was regularly cascaded!!
heho mwangi – Rooney is not in Ronaldo’s class!!!!!!

Rooney has many flaws in his game, still. He seems to rush too often, and his concentration goes too. His first touch, passing and shooting is much better than he has shown at times. Hopefully he will iron these kinks out soon, because then he will be, geniunely, one of the top 3or 4 in the world. What he does offer, almost noone else in the world can do - tireless determination, and will to win that exceeds almost anyone you care to name (even Keane or Robbo I think). His team play, ability to cover back, win tackles and inspire others is better than any other forward in the game.
United have not played well this season so far, but we are just warming up and I can see real signs that the team is starting to gel. Berba is getting better, slowly, as is Valencia, and the young players are all coming on well. Rio, Edwin, Vidic will all regain top form soon, and I'd rather they did for the back end of the season than the start. Scholes' passing was truly sublime last night, he was back to near his best. Macheda was impressive too, that boy has a great future. Owen missed some chances, but he is improving and I reckon will just get sharper. His style fits our current tactics really well, as neither Berb of Rooney try to get beyond the last defender. Owen constant aim to get in behind opens up lots of space, and we are starting to adapt to these tactical changes.

Wayne is trying to change two facets of his play. One, he is trying to control his temper, because it was getting counter productive. Two, he is trying to restrain his instinct to run the whole show and preserve his energy for the final third.

I think you dont watch spanish football mate, cause if you did you would realise that he hasn't had a good start to the season and if anything his price has gone down since the summer. He doesn't get to start for the argentinian side even though he's to be the son in law of the manager...i think the fact that we didn't go for him last season might be a masterstroke, thus if his form continues we could try a sneeky bid before the world cup.
Hey i don't doubt the ability just not the price tag last season.
30mil tops for me.

Take your point about not being a "headless chicken," but I do think there is something missing in him at the moment, especially when he has the ball. He gives the ball away so often it is untrue, and for a guy of his build, he should be protecting the ball much better.
His movement is also poor at present. Maybe, he can't get to grips with playing in a more advanced CF role, because his movement across the line has been pretty much non-existent. Although he is missing a few chances, you only have to look at Owens runs and movement to see how it is done. If we had someone with a little more culture in midfield to thread little balls in, Owen would be on fire.
Rooney's form isn't great, yet it doesn't get mentioned, especially in the press, as he is the Golden boy. I love the bloke to bits, but it doesn't mean you can't be critical of him. I personally think Berba has been the stand out player of the two this year, with culture and class. If Rooney would have scored the goal Berba got against Blackburn, I guarantee the press and fans alike would have been lording it for weeks.

I have a complaint. Yesterday it was Danny, Wilmslow was the village idiot and today you say he is a clown. I will have you know that I am a village idiot clown and strongly object to being compared to Danny, Wilmslow.
