Obertan came off the bench in the second half for his Premier League debut after a good performance in the Cup win over Barnsley.
The former Bordeaux winger, now fully recovered from a nagging back injury, was one-on-one with Paul Robinson but saw his weak shot blocked.
Then Obertan found himself clear only yards from goal following a square ball from Antonio Valencia, only to find the wrong side of the post.
The Reds' boss said: "Gabriel was a bit nervous when he came on.
"It was only his second game in seven months, so you have to put it in perspective. But then he settled down and did well. He is not happy with himself and that is a good thing."
Obertan felt his lack of match sharpness contributed to him not taking advantage of the opportunities.
He said: "I was a bit disappointed but I have been injured for four months. I think it was a good debut, I ran hard and tried to do my best.
"I need a bit of rhythm but I think I will be better after a few matches."
How do you think Obertan did? Have your say.

The official was right in line with the incident so I fail to see any reason for him to put his flag up apart from nervousness it was very bazzare..... THERES NO QUESTION ABOUT THAT!

I reckon SAF has got far more sense than to give the lad a hard time. Obertan showed some good touches, although he is very slightly built.

Right, on to the Man in question. I didn't want to be too critical after Barnsley, as he did ok in the first half but if you check my comments out, i was concerned & suggested that Bellion had replaced him at HT. Ok, so it was slightly tongue in cheek! A mate asked me how good was he though & i couldn't really answer him. "that tells me all i need to know to know" he replied. I took that mate on Saturday.....& now he says he knows in his own mind !!
I'm sorry, & it's a harsh world, but if this lad makes it at Utd, well,...... i don't know what i'll be. When Larry White is gobsmacked that Utd have signed him.....thats good enough for me! To put it in context, there was that Buzz in the ground after his miss on Saturday. The buzz, normally reserved for a piece of Ronaldo magic!! ;)
It wasn't just that miss, he dribbled the ball out of play too ffs and took a shot (going for glory, fair enough) from a tightish angle with Owen in the middle, waiting for a tap in. Ok, some of it could have been nerves but the lad just doesn't look a footballer. I hope i'm wrong but he makes Nini look like Ronaldinho (albeit with a mental block! ). If i'm wrong, you can blast me on this site forever.......i'm that confident !!
I said it last week & NOW i'm pinning my colours to the mast.......he is .....Daveed BELLION, re-incarnated (with a touch of Willy Prunier) & stretched !! & His face is as long as Scholesy!! lol.
& I'm afraid he'll become bait for a norwegian football commentator should we ever lose over there in the CL........ Massimo Taibi, Eric Djemba-Djemba-Djemba, Liam Miller, William Prunier, Daveeeeeed Bellion, Dong Fangzou, Gabriel Obertan.....your boys took one hell of a beating tonight !
happy days.

finally, im glad your so confident that he will fail (captain of the pub quiz team by any chance?) but i will be reserving my judgements until he's been given a few more opportunities.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Obertan simply because its too soon if he's still missing the same opportunities in 8-9 games time then I'd agree....maybe :p

Ok shall we just get rid of him now then? I mean first team debut, on for 20 mins, only played two lower key matches before it and recovering from a long term back injury, yeah we have a clear view of what he'll be like in the future. Guessing your someone who wanted Fletcher sold for years?
Jees, give the guy a chance. You honestly cant judge him yet. I thought he looked promising. Nothing too special but he is young and will improve. You seriously cant call him another Bellion already! Crazy.

Yes he missed a sitter on saturday, but to already have him down as a failure is wrong, just wrong!!!!

Obertan cost the same as Van Persie. If he turns out to be half as good, it will have been successful business. It would be better business I feel to shake up and invest in our lacklustre scouting set-up which seems to get more wrong than right.
Already, Obertan has overtaken the more expensive and experienced Tosic. How did that happen?

If any of you had seen him for the French U-16 and U-17 teams you'd know that the lad has sufficient talent to be a major success at United. At that age he was one of the hottest talents in Europe and was covetted by the biggest teams, including United. He went to Bordeaux and couldn't break into the side at the age of 17 but he had an undiagnosed back problem to contend with too. As with all youngsters coming to United, we know he'll be skillful but the key is whether he has the mental attributes to make it here. I'm confident that he has. Given a year or so learning the United way and I think he'll be a regular starter and scorer.

Sorry,I just don't see it - that he'll ever be good enough for us..... but i'm just one red !! I said exactly the same on these pages after Dong played against Coventry & only BobbyD said anything similar. I'm only expressing my belief, that's diffrent from saying the lad is a failure. i see a far better technical footballer in Tosic. One who is gifted with awareness but obviously has some size/strength issues to overcome if HE wants to make it in English football. He's played plenty of times for his country though whereas Belliontan has just created a murmour in his country because they can't believe we've signed him!!
Anyway, my comments aren't based on him missing a 'gobber', they're based on his movement, his technical ability etc..... You can tell a footballer, as they say!
Bellion is Back !

My opinion is this :-
Obertan was a gamble born of having no money to spend. A player with ability as a youngster and the hope that whilst he hasnt really developed as thought initially, he could develop at United. The biggest suprise to his former bosses was that he was mentally fragile, Bordeaux didnt even play him last season and sent him to a lower club. After the misery of Saturdays misses, particularly the second miss I have to question whether he will get past that moment. Particularly after he ran the ball out of play with his first touch. I wasnt impressed an ounce with his performance on Saturday to be honest. He looked nervous, clumbsy and out of his depth. A few players have had a bit of a mare on there debut and become greats for the club. Pally,Coley,Evra to name a few but these are exceptions to a rule and all were single minded, strong mentally and absolutely top class players. I wont hold my breath on Obertan. Its rare that any player who looks as poor as he did on Saturday transforms into a truely great player, and thats what we are lacking. Not decent players or even good players, we have loads of them. We need a couple of really great players. My big hope is Ljajic who arrives in January.

People seem to see him as some kind of saviour, he isn't. Better to give Nani some support and hope he improves, he's only 22 for crying out.....
