DANNY Welbeck and Michael Owen scored to send Manchester United through to the last eight of the Carling Cup.
Welbeck headed home from close range after six minutes, and although Barnsley had some decent chances themselves, Owen's sharply taken goal just before the hour settled matters.
The main negative on the night for United was a straight red card for Gary Neville after the skipper's foul on Adam Hammill after 63 minutes.
But the Championship side proved that United’s defensive frailties run deeper than just the crisis couple of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, repeatedly exposing their illustrious rivals with managing to fully punish them.
If boss Sir Alex Ferguson was considering shaking up his rearguard after an indifferent start to the season he may be forced to think again after seeing how his second string struggled to contain Barnsley.
If not for the profligate finishing of Mark Robins’ side and one excellent second half save from Ben Foster, United could have been on the receiving end of an embarrassing defeat.
Time and again Barnsley found themselves presented with glorious opportunities – either from set pieces or open play, only to continually fluff their lines.
Conversely, United created few openings, but had the luxury of finishers like Welbeck and Owen to make the most of them.
How United were grateful for Welbeck’s opener after just six minutes.
Ferguson believes the 19-year-old could gatecrash Fabio Capello’s World Cup party next summer, but he hardly had to be of international class to score his second goal in successive games in this competition.
United lead
His well-taken strike was enough to see off Wolves last month, but on this occasion he was allowed to ghost in at the near post to nod home Anderson’s corner.
It gave United a foothold, but Barnsley could consider themselve unfortunate not to go in at the break on level terms.
First Daniel Bogdanovic and then Stephen Foster failed to hit the target when afforded free headers from corners.
Owen should have put United further clear soon after the re-start, but he made no mistake on 59 minutes when put through by substitute Zoran Tosic.
Wriggling into space thanks to a fine nutmeg, the England striker coolly slotted past Luke Steele to put United in complete control.
But if United expected it to knock the stuffing out Barnsley they were wrong as the home side created more than enough chances to get back into the game.
Anderson da Silva dragged one shot wide when he should have worked Ben Foster, while Iain Hulme headed wide when he had the whole goal to aim for.
Bogdanovic again failed to call Foster into action when in a good position and Anderson was guilty of wastefulness once again when heading wide.
It took Jacob Butterfield to finally bring the best out of Foster with a low shot that the keeper was at full stretch to keep out.
Ferguson traditionally uses this competition to blood his youngsters, but on this occasion it gave him the welcome opportunity to introduce Obertan to English football following his move from Bordeaux in the summer.
Obertan has spent his time so far at Old Trafford recuperating from an operation to cure a problem back, but Ferguson has high hopes he has discovered a gem in the winger once considered one of the most exciting young players in Europe.
There was little evidence of that last night, apart from brief flashes in the first half, in a match that was always going to be about getting minutes under the Frenchman’s belt.
That it turned out to be another worrying night for his rearguard will have been of much greater concern for the United manager.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.

Not convinced about Foster,Neville was sent off after he got the ball, however he should not even have started Delaet should have also I would have had Gibson in the center of Defence as are two central defenders failed time and again to do their job, also to much back passing and sloppy play.
What this shows is just how we are crying out for a world class coach because we have the players and the talent they just need the right direction, the ref even booked the wrong twin.
However I would rather watch these young lads every week OWEN EVEN DID WELL FOR HIS GOAL

Never let it be said that James Robson is one to let the facts get in the way of a good story but I think he said this a year ago.

Good game. Good win. For a scratch team who probably had to be introduced to each other on the coach it was a decent display. Poor defending on crosses, Macheda and Evans were poor at tracking the players they were marking. But, it was a good display and we deserved to win and everyone can see we have the future 90% sorted.

Generally though we missed Gibson who is injured but sorry Rafael in the middle or was it Fabio was a mistake as that left Anderson who was the best with no help going forward or defending. OBertan is a good player but we never seem to give him the ball to show what he could do it all seemed to go down the left. As for Macheda a waste of time being on the pitch should have been replaced by King before Neville got unluckily sent off.
Very poor at defending corners by both Brown and Evans not picking up their players.

Now To Foster...one really good save, but I thought he had a mare otherwise. Scared the hell out of me even more so than KK does. He looked so uncomfortable out there, did not control his area, ball distribution only fair, and did not inspire confidence at all. Wonder what his problem is, he was so promising, but looks like he's going backwards this season. Keepers tend to come on later in their careers, but he needs to get himself sorted PDQ if he wants to stick around with us.
Oh well, on to the next round.

Interesting also if this quote about Fergie on Wellbeck is true - "Ferguson believes the 19-year-old could gatecrash Fabio Capello’s World Cup party next summer...."
Wellbeck can't even gatecrash the first team party at Man Utd but Fergie thinks he is England material???

obertan occasionally showed that he MAY make it neat tidy eye for a pass.
wellbeck was our best player.
macheda was asleep for 70 minutes.
owen scored a good goal but other than that was anonymous.
andersen is making no progress
rafael is no central midfield player where is gibson?
the defence as a whole were poor
foster one good save and was otherwiswe jittery neville deserved to be sent off.

The defence were all over the place for most of the game and once Barnsley got up a head of steam our midfield seemed pretty helpless to stop them. The team selection was a bit odd but I suppose it’s more important to get game time.
The report is spot on. I can’t recall another game in recent times when a side created so many good chances against us. If Barnsley had scored four or five it would not have been a surprise or unjust. The defensive side of the team performance was a shambles and we were more than a bit fortunate not to get beaten.
I was thinking that Fergie may spring a surprise against Blackburn and drop both Rio & Vidic but Wes & JE just didn’t look the pairing last night.

promising signs, but still think our immediate problems for the 1st 11 are in the midfield!!!
