Manchester United

United keepers: scouting special

HAVING kept his spending to a minimum during the summer transfer window, Sir Alex Ferguson may soon be planning on spending big to bring a top-class goalkeeper to Old Trafford.
Edwin Van Der Sar has been a reliable custodian for United for the last four years, but although he has not ruled out playing beyond this season, he is nearing the end of his career.

Ben Foster has failed to convince at the start of the season with a series of nervous performances and 30-year-old Tomasz Kuszczak is probably never going to be first-choice.

Ferguson has dipped into the market many times looking for the right keeper during his 23-years-old at the helm and has been ruthless when it came to dealing with those he doesn't consider up to the grade. With the giant shadow of Peter Schmeichel looming over all those who stand in the United goal, we take a look at five possible candidates for the job:

Gianliugi Buffon

Having won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and clinched a host of trophies with Parma and Juventus during his 14-year domestic careeer, Buffon is still widely held by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world. There was talk about him being over the hill last season, when he struggled with back and groin injuries, but he has been back to his best for Juve this season and at 31 is still relatively young for a keeper. Ferguson underlined the value of experience when he signed Van Der Sar at the age of 34 in 2005. The big problem will be finding the money to persuade Juve to sell, especially after Buffon signed a contract extension in the summer. However, he did express at interest in playing in the Premier League in March while dismissing talk of a lucrative move to City.

Igor Akinfeev

After breaking into the CSKA Moscow starting line-up at the age of 17 in 2003, he's been the club's first-choice goalkeeper ever since. He has a key role in helping the team win the Russian Premier League on two occasions and the UEFA Cup. He became the youngest-ever play to debut for Russia, at the age of 18 years and 20 days, in a friendly mach against Norway in April 2004. In his second Champions League campaign he managed to go 362 minutes without conceding a goal. Now 23, he has been compared to the legendary Russian keeper Lev Yashin.

Manuel Neuer

The highly rated 23-year-old has been linked with United since starring in the Germany side that won last summer's Under-21s European Championships in Sweden. After breaking into the Schalke 04 side in the 2006/07 season, he was one of only three players to play every minute of the subsequent season. In March 2008, he pulled off a series of stunning saves, including penalties from Bruno Alves and Lisandro Lopez, to help beat FC Porto and steer Schalke into the Champions League quarter-finals. Neuer's hero as a child was former Schalke and Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann.

Rui Patricio

Despite starting out as a striker as a youth player, Patricio quickly took to the gloves after being taken on by Sporting Lisbon's academy. He made his first-team debut aged 18 in November 2006, coming on as a substitute and saving a penalty to secure a 1-0 away win at C.S. Maritimo. He first came to United's attention with an impressive performance against the Reds in the 2007-08 Champions League campaign, with Ronaldo reportedly giving him a glowing endorsement. United scout Toninho Cruz has since watched the 21-year-old on several occasions.

Iker Casillas

A product of Real Madrid's youth system and still a one-club man at the age of 28, he has racked up 353 first-team appearances since making since debut in 1999. In 2000, he became the youngest-ever keeper to ever play in a Champions League final when Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 just four days after his nineteenth birthday. During the 2007-08 season, he only conceded 32 goals in 36 games as Real clinched their 31st La Liga title. He also captained Spain in the 2008 European Championships, becoming the first goalkeeper-captain to lift the trophy when they beat Germany 1-0 in the final.

Casillas is a no go,patricio could come as we have good links with sporting, buffon is too old and would cost us,akinfeev will get a chance to impress against us next week, and neuer would cost about 10million, all I def know is that vds cant go on forever, foster blew his chance and kitkat will never be 1st choice.

Size matters, go for the biggest, Neuer

We need to stop all this petty speculation and throw all our support behind the keepers we have

Get Edwin to stay on for next season and let him spend more time training Ben, as IMO Ben is still our future No 1, then help to bring through Ron Robert Zieller(who was excellent in the U20 world cup).

Ben has made some glaring mistakes, for that there is no denial, however mistakes are going to happen and would they have been so hyped up by the red top media if he were playing for anyone else? Is there a vendetta to ruin his confidence and therefore get at both SAF & Utd by the press? Lets support our own and move on

In Foster I trust!!!

In an ideal world, Casillas, but given the chance of that happening Akinfeev please.

'Akinfeev' all the way... or maybe Manuel Neuer... I still think Kuszczak is a very good Goalkeeper and deserve to be given at least 5 starts to prove himself.

Buffon too old? He is merely 31, not at all old for a goalkeeper. Tall, strong, experienced, skilled - he would be my pick, if any is required.

Report This Reply

Buffon would clearly be the best instant fix, language excepted, but no way will he be gettable.
Foster; all goalies make mistakes born of a concentration lapse or a misjudgement, but since Foster got the door opened to him for United and England it has been the panic attacks which have been so spectacularly evident. Would you set out this campaign with Ferdinand and Foster and expect clean sheets? Thought not and without Ronnie we shall need them!

neal 07, good comments - I don't believe that SAF has lost faith in Foster and I certainly haven't.

Personally i would go for a Premier League goalkeeper who has experience of the League. My pick who we could realistically get would be Jussi jaskelienen from Bolton.Hes still only 32, a brilliant, proven all round goalkeeper and very experienced. If we went for one outside PL then i would go for Julio Cesar of Inter Milan. When Van Der Sar retires we need a proven, quality, experienced allround goalkeeper who is the finished article or very near to it, not goalkeepers who are still learning there trade, have great potential and therefor will make alot more mistakes than an experienced one so costing us points and games.Although if we do sign another young keeper (Neuer, Akinfeev) or stick with Foster then Van Der Sar MUST stay for another season to pass on his experience to them.

Akinfeev sounds great. We should be prepered to spend big money, keepers really matter. Kuszczak is a fine number two. As for Ben Foster - you are the weakest link, goodbye!

No youngsters, or 'potentials' we need a top class, experienced, 'battle hardened ' keeper'

Casillas and Buffon fit the bill; the former is not available;the latter might be. Spend whatever it takes on him.

Jaskelainen is a decent keeper for sure. But its all about how they handle the pressure. I actually think (and I know I will get ridiculed for this) that James is an outstanding keeper. I just think that in the higher profile matches that he may suffer. All keepers make mistakes - its how they handle the mistakes the next match or even in the same match when the spotlight is on them that mark the very best out.

I think that most fans have given their support to the present keepers but the GKs have made too many mistakes that look very basic, sorry neal but once a keeper as lost confidence & starts to make basic mistakes it is very difficult to recover form. This is compounded at MU were they will always be under the microscope,I thought that Tim howard recieved a rough deal with us but there we go.Sorry to say but the days of great English keepers look to be over,no way does BF look in the class that MU or England require.(hope I am wrong)

Stick with Ben Foster we all make mistakes at work and we move on if he learns from them he will be stronger for it.

I think unfortunatley for Ben Mistakes are always highlighted more at man united than any other club, I think intime he will be a good keeper the fans need to be patient after all the goalkeeper is only as good as his defence......

For its a 3 way battle and its just a case of working out whether we want experiance or a long term number one.

If its a keeper with experiance playing at the highest level for me its Diego Lopez of Villareal,
or we go for one of the top top young keepers in Akinfeev or Neuer either would be excellent.

As for Foster he will go on to become a good premier league keeper like Tim Howard did but united need more than that we need a world class keeper and Foster isnt quite that in my opion.

As mentioned in an earlier mail - sorry this lad doesn't cut it for me. There's been too many scarry moments for my liking so far this season and I know opposition sides are playing to this weakness - Sunderland springs to mind.
Get Neuer in the January window - we need a presence between the sticks.

Neuer is good as is Akinfeev , Buffon will come or will Casillas,
another good one is Rene Adler from Germany !
i agree Foster does not give the team or the supporters any confidence its a pity , but thats how i feel and i dont feel any safer with Kitkat either , we need another first class keeper !

I recall seeing footage of Schmikes in the dressing room some years back in which after he'd been mickeyed by Brucey, standing in in a mock temper and shouting out 'I AM NOT A GERMAN!!' which I think stands out as a self-fulfilling prophesy and that we'll see Neuer or that other German laddy in goal some time soon...

has anyone watched that get your mascot back thing at the bottom of the page?

Drago 34 your comments are great but seem remarkably similar to this comment left on the 12th of August

He sound's like a good keeper with plenty of potential & a fair bit of experience already- even at the relatively young age(for a keeper) of 23, though I must admit I don't know much about him. If we are looking for young up & coming keepers though? Why not get Russia & CSKA's Igor Akinfeev, who has the potential to be world class, about 6 season's as CSKA's number 1 keeper & who already has international & Champs league experience, at only 23. But we do already have Foster(incase anyone's forgot?) with lot's of potential & room to grow, ideally Ferguson should send him out on loan to get his season of Prem league experience- preferably at a likely relegation candidate(City maybe..?), then he can come back next year mile's better for it.

Realistically to keep challenging for regular honours I feel United need a keeper who's the finished article or at least 99% already there- preferably one of either Inter Milan's J.Cesar, Fiorentina's Frey, or closer to home you've got Bolton's Jaaskelainen (good keeper's who stand out in poor teams are usually better, as they are challenged more often with the average quality of the defender's infront of them, even when VD'Sar kept ALL those clean sheet's he only had half a dozen save's to make in all of the game's- neither of which were too strenuos for him) It's highly unlikely but Ferguson could even try for Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon? Though he would obviously be rather expensive to buy. Ideally United want one who's round about 30- the alleged peak years for a keeper- who has lot's of top level experience, preferably Champs league or international at the least to command & cope with the rigours, expectations & demand's of United.

I would go for experience over youth as don't think United can afford to have a young keeper as first choice who's still learning his trade an liable to make regular mistakes whilst getting the experience needed to keep goal in the many big games that come whilst playing for United.

But surely Ferguson also know's this? Time will tell

I'm also a big fan of Diego Lopez...Villareal are a mess and I think they would be willing to sell. As for Foster, I think the jury is still out - I will support him when picked, but at the same time, his "growing pains" will cost us points and ultimately, titles. I'm all for sticking by a player, but not at the expense of the team's success. Best case scenario, Foster's career mirrors Tim Howard's...which is fine, but not good enough for United.

The problem with Foster is that he is not only young in a position that demands experience, but is inexperienced even for his age given that he was a late starter and has had so much time out with injuries. The guy mostly plays black eyed with fear, like a rabbit in the headlights and it is cruel to torture him so. Consider, playing between the sticks for United is all about being idle for much of the match before executing perfectly on the few occasions called upon, so, work out the percentage of incompetent moments to the few times he has been in action; not good!
