Without the spark of Cristiano Ronaldo and the tenacity of Carlos Tevez, among fans and critics alike there is a sense that the Reds are collectively out-of-sorts.
Impressive victories against Wigan and Spurs have been balanced by a fortuitous defeat of Arsenal, an ultimately triumphant derby that was fraught with problems, and an uncomfortable Champions League success against Wolfsburg that was followed at the weekend by a poor effort against Sunderland.
It is not uncommon for United to have such an up and down start. Twelve months ago they were in fifth place and the year before could barely score yet they went on to finish both campaigns as worthy champions.
But are the problems this autumn more than just United's annual cold start?
Here M.E.N. Sport analyses the Reds' departments.
GOALKEEPER
The bedrock of United's glorious 90s era was Peter Schmeichel. The foundation of the success during the past three years has been Edwin Van der Sar.
In between, was a period of uncertainty in the goalkeeping department.
The filling in the sandwich between the Danish and Dutch greats was a mix of tasty bites and unpalatable mouthfuls.
This season has seen a return of the ingredients that caused Sir Alex Ferguson and United fans so much indigestion between 1999 and 2006.
While Van der Sar has been recovering from a finger injury sustained in pre-season, Ben Foster has been handed the chance to prove he will be a worthy successor to the Dutch master. The England World Cup wannabe, however, has suffered something of a calamitous introduction to his first lengthy run in United's goal.
Foster is a hugely likeable guy and, essentially, a very good keeper but appears to be suffering in the spotlight at times.
There have been Van der Sar moments but too many echoes of Massimo Taibi. Fergie has nailed his colours to the Foster mast while the Dutch veteran has been absent, though Tomasz Kuszczak did get a surprise outing against Wolfsburg.
But the United boss will be encouraged that Van der Sar could be fit for the Old Trafford clash against Bolton a week on Saturday.
He will also be comforted that the near 39-year-old has said his retirement plans, initially thought to be at the end of the season, are not set in stone.
The Reds have a dossier on potential new keeper recruits, as in all departments, and there is every chance bidding for those targets might become serious in January.
DEFENCE
RIO Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been rightly lauded as one of the best central defensive partnerships in Europe over the last three years.
The Reds have had that first choice unit together on four occasions this season - against Spurs, City, Stoke and Wolfsburg. Thigh and groin injuries for the Englishman and a calf problem for the Serb has broken up the pairing and in searching for 100 per cent fitness both have had an uneasy time.
Ferdinand had a dodgy early return in the opening minutes at Spurs and was poor by his high standards in the derby.
Vidic, meanwhile, hasn't looked his commanding self recently against the big guys of Wolfsburg and Sunderland.
Jonny Evans has done a manful job standing in and must now be seeing real windows of opportunity in what has been a solid and trusted area.
A run of games could see the Ferdinand-Vidic axis restore its customary meanness. But it is a concern that the foundation of last season's success should be looking so uncomfortable and vulnerable.
MIDFIELD
The department where Fergie has an abundance of numbers and which causes the most debate as he mixes and matches his middle men.
It's not as if the forums or pub debates would come up with a definitive answer as to United's best midfield quartet.
But ask who might add something extra to the department and you'd almost certainly have the names of Owen Hargreaves and Franck Ribery flooding in.
At least the former is on the Reds' books and could be back next month after his nightmare 12 months out with a serious knee injury.
Of those who have occupied the midfield this term there can be little argument that the sensational Ryan Giggs, maestro Paul Scholes and key hub Darren Fletcher have been the outstanding performers.
Everyone else has to search their conscience.
It has been a quiet introduction for Antonio Valencia. Some moments of great promise but the £17m recruit from Wigan has yet to really take a game by the scruff of the neck.
Meanwhile, Nani continues to frustrate the Old Trafford crowd with his abundant skill but precious little end product, while Anderson, Ji-sung Park, Darron Gibson and Michael Carrick have barely registered on the radar so far.
For all the numbers in there, the majority of Reds fans are waiting for the return of the man who has had two major knee operations in the last 12 months.
ATTACK
Once Karim Benzema snubbed United for Real Madrid, there wasn't really a top young striker available who Sir Alex Ferguson was prepared to risk money on.
It did leave United's spearhead, once proudly boasting four top-notch hitmen, somewhat light on numbers.
Even the free transfer addition of Michael Owen has so far been a stop-start affair.
A goal against Wigan and his sensational derby winner against City suggested Owen could prove to be another Fergie masterstroke signing. However, his recent groin problem has tempered that excitement.
Wayne Rooney's goals have dwindled after a blistering start while Dimitar Berbatov is slowly beginning to add more names to his fan club.
But the back-up is young and, at present, lightweight. Danny Welbeck played against Wolfsburg on the wing while last season's brief smash-hit, Federico Macheda, has had just a single Carling Cup run-out.
However, there has been speculation that perhaps some of last season's adulation has gone to the Italian's head.
What isn't in doubt is that Fergie was unhappy that the teenage pair were away more on international duty than getting a bread and butter grounding at Old Trafford this season.
Though there are five names in the attacking frame, it is very much the Rooney-Berbatov axis that is being asked to bear the brunt of the responsibility.
What is your assessment of the squad? Have your say.

Do you think United fired on all cylinders last year ?
We are 2 pts better off in the prem have scored 5 more goals and are top of our CL league group with max pts . We have seen excellent perfomances at Spurs and Stoke and make no mistake we battered city 2nd half with a scintillating display of attacking football .
Yes a few players are not on top form , thats the way it goes , we know that form will return .
But where was your article just over a week ago when we were top ?

IMO since the departure of Keano and then the decline of GN, the arm band has been passed around a committee of unsuitable favourites.
Without the leadership of a true captain we rarely get the final 10% of effort which makes the difference to a result.

And we beat Arsenal in the league (didnt manage that with Ronaldo last year), absolutely smashed City but were unfortunate with uncharacterisitc errors and Wolfsburg was a good result.
Sunderland was a poor performance which we were moments away from losing, but just like champions do, we fought to the end and could have even won it!
We are sitting 2 points behind Chelsea and have had the harder fixtures so far. Just like any season, we haven't hit top gear but its early October, when have we and which team has???
We have more goals and more points then at the same stage last season, we have a fantastic squad and I'm sure we will be challenging come May.
Every department in our team has great competition and choice so the article seems to have a City bias!

mid season signing now has been shown to be a must after the picture of united getting very difficult wins draw and losing from 2nd class teams like burnly and sunderland.
we need verygood back up keeper.
we need a signing with an excellent winger to replace ronaldo's spot, so we would not be obliged ro wish every game that valencia , nani or park do a great job, which is should be happening in everygame with a united player.

Looking into the future giggs, vds, scholes and neville will surely have to be sadly given less game time, so all basically have to be replaced next summer, also we dont have a proper fit rb who can be relied upon,no creative player in midfield and we are short upfront, should have invested into the squad in the summer, the ronaldo deal was agreed ages ago so players should have been bought bf the sale.

I agree that we are not winning games in the same Hollywood style as we were last season but the results are there and im a happy fan.
I know we look to United for our main stay of entertainment and we are missing an "entertainer" but for all purposes i think we are more of a threat as we are trying to use our whole skill base which makes us tactically a stronger threat.
We do need to look at the goal keeping problem, i like Foster but i think he does have too many dear in a headlamp moments.
Anderson is the player for me he has bags of potential and looks like he has pulled his socks up.
I also understand that Fergie needs to play Giggs and Scholes to get squeeze the last drops out of them but i think the midfield needs a more consistant run
Anyway what do i know im just a fan.
I will close on this last note that EVRA needs more plaudits, he is excellent and looks so comfortable on the Ball

Who knows what our best midfield line-up is? I think Anderson will, eventually, come good, Carrick is returning to good form, Giggs is terrific (though we can't rely on him), while Fletcher is consistent; Scholes delivers one poor performance for every good one, Nani's time is running out and Valencia has yet to prove himself - I doubt he'll be a major force for us.
Up front, Rooney will rediscover his touch very soon, I'm sure, while Berbatov is a superb player. He just needs to work out how to prove it, week in, week out. Macheda seems to have faded into the background, Welbeck looks like he'll never be quite good enough and Owen is a useful but limited addition to the squad.
I see the Stretford End Arising (06/10/2009 at 10:12)
We had a certain Ronaldo to return then.
Whats wrong with United's squad.
We replaced world class talented with mediocrity at best.
Paying off the shylock instead of strengthening the squad.

I also agree with some of the other comments, SAF is the man but twice he has made 2 many changes to the team, Burnley and Sunderland, he needs to stick with the stongest team!!

We see these type of articles season after season, journo's trying to find problems where there are none. It seems to me that some of them get carried away with the faint hope of United's dominance coming to an end. Well perhaps they should try to maintain some degree of professionalism and refrain from letting their own allegiances rule their pens. Come end of season, like many of the so-called experts on the box, they will be left with egg on their face... again.

Precentage ratio to saves 89.47% VDS 77.42% Foster 70.37%, then right back he keeps playing O,Shea who is a great squad player, but should not be keeping out players like Fabio and de Laet who can move at pace cross the ball and get behind opposition defenders. He bought Valencia when Palacio would have been a better option.
The midfield can,t settle still playing the short fuse Carrick is far to slow and with all due respect to Fletcher he has done very well but lacks true class.Hargreaves will make the differnce.
Bothe Nani and Valencia are just going nowhere at the moment perhaps that could be down to poor coaching at the weekend we did not have one central forawrd on the bench.
Lets be honest we should not haveto rely on Giggs to save the day.
Great players just have the gift we have a player Like Kiko who did himself proud will Fergie sell him like he did Rossi and Pique Tosic must feel really bad those who call him obviously only pick your games he has more talent than Valencia and Nani put together.
Gibson a powerhouse who can get a shot on goal he needs to play more.
virgopq, singapore (06/10/2009 at 10:32)
For me, Fergie shud :-
01. Get VDS back as quickly as possible. Foster is gd but not gd enough for Man Utd. His pressence in goal is nerve wreckin' even for viewers, not to mention the players infront of him!.
02. Get the De Silva bros, Wes Brown & Obertan more involved. O'Shea is rubbish!.
03. More games for Zoran Tosic, Adem Ljajic, Nani, Valencia & Park at both the right & left flanks.
04. Stick Giggsy & Fletcher in the middle or Scholsey & Anderson. Carrick cud partner Hargreaves when he comes back. Get these pairs to play together on a regular basis to work on their understanding & cohesion.
05. Upfront, it's Rooney & Berba. Owen to partner Macheda.
So, imho, I think Fergie shud decide on a team consistin' :-
* VDS *
Rafael * Ferdinand * Vidic * Evra
* Fletcher *
Valencia or Park * Nani or Zoran
* Giggsy *
Rooney * Berbatov
Subs: Thomas, Fabio, Evans, Anderson, Scholes, Owens
Sell: Ben Foster, O'Shea, Welbeck
Groom for Future: Zoran Tosic, Adem Ljalic, Macheda, Rodrigo Possebon
Fredrik, Sweden (06/10/2009 at 10:35)
Nani, Tosic, Valencia and Park are simply just not good enough. I seriously think they will score less than 5 PL goals this season. Not signing Robben is a mystery to me, he would have been perfect despite his injury problems. Didn't we have the money?
The return of vds will be a boost, and hopefully OH can stay fit which would improve our midfield: OH, Fletcher, Anderson/Carrick, Giggs is a very good midfield, but SAF must stop tinkering. Obertan, Ljajic and Diouf will strengthen the squad in January, but I can't see us making a big signing like Silva or Aguero.
MyNameIsEarl, MANCHESTER (06/10/2009 at 10:35)
Fletcher
Obertan Rooney Berbatov Evra
carlton cole
Fabio much better than his bro
cole a proper striker, strong, powerful, can hold the ball
Rooney midfield, he needs to be involved in everything Midfield is his best position, saw him play last ten mins of the last england game in midfield BRILLIANT.
berbatov midfield playmaker would be fantastic in that position why have him up front with his back to goal, that's what cole would be brilliant at
evra on the left wing backed up with de laet, evra is a winger simple as

We have a massive sqaud of unproven untested young players, particularly in midfeild coupled with ageing stars and decent honest pro's. My main concern is the more talented unproven youngsters you add the less chance ANY of them have of making the grade or getting enough of a chance. Obertan,Tosic,Ljajic,Wellback,Macheda,King,Possebon,Diouf,Petrucci,Eikrem could all be competing with Scholes,Giggs,Anderson,Nani,Valencia,Carrick,Hargreaves,Fletcher,Gibson,Park !! How on earth are most of those going to fulfill their potential ?
manc abroad, OT (06/10/2009 at 10:47)
Second in the league, top of the CL group, dropped four points in the league.
If we were City we would be celebrating, but we are not City. There is a problem with the team / squad that is getting to the fans. The last CL game, the ground was like a morgue, which is unusual for European nights. Some established and young players are NOT playing to their best. The midfield is stuttering, the defence is not as solid as last season. Wes Brown is back, yet SAF is ignoring him, sticking with O'Shea.
Foster could do with some of the defensive displays that VDS got last season to gain some confidence. Some games he had nothing to do as the defence was awesome.
The midfield is missing the spark, too many lazy passes, Anderson and Carrick not used enough, both seemingly falling out with SAF. Carrick for criticising tactics in the CL final.
The wide players only look dangerous when Evra bombs past them. Nani has to get his head from up his own arse and realise his own potential, play the right ball at the right time instead of trying to beat the extra man or shoot when a team mate is in a better position. Valencia looks like he is in shock, by that I mean he does not believe he should be playing in a team like united's, and that his true level is Wigan, (time will tell). When he has the chance to pass he needs that re-assuring touch and by that time in the Premiership he has two defenders on him.
As I have said before we seem to be still suffering a CL final hangover, where some of the self belief has been knocked out of some established first team players. I hope Owen Hargreaves comes back to his previous best form and is not finished as a player, where we will cash in on the insurance money.
For the strikers Berba has still not gelled into the team. Fantastic touches, but for me in the wrong areas of the pitch. mind you with the service he has been getting from the wide players, it is not surprising.
SAF has to look at the team before berating the referee. United had over 90 minutes against Sunderland, who man for man they should of beaten. Unfortunately Sunderland played as a team and United did not start playing again until the second half.
Having said all that, I believe United will compensate for their problems. Luckily, Arsenal and Liverpool are having their own problems, Chel$ki have the transfer ban looming and will lose four players to the African nations Cup Jan / Feb.
United can still win the Premiership, but need to re-discover their self belief.

The positives are that Fletcher is playing far better, Giggs is playing on the wing, Evra is as good as ever, Valencia is keeping Park out so we look more balanced and Anderson is finding the form he had two seasons ago. Rooney is looking a little happier (not much) and Berbatov will get more starts so he will most likely make more impact. In fact the only real negative is Ben Foster and he probably needs a little time to find his feet - or we may have to find another replacement soon - his form is affecting the defence so that is a problem that needs to be solved.
