Although UEFA president Michel Platini has attempted to inject some life into the group stages of the competition by widening the number of countries who have an interest, many still believe the format is flawed.
With England providing three semi-finalists in each of the last three seasons, a sense of predictability has surrounded Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
Indeed, with the exception of 2004 when Jose Mourinho’s Porto defeated Monaco, the only countries who have supplied finalists in the last 13 years are England, Spain, Italy and Germany.
Some feel the answer is to revert back to the old system of only league winners from each country being eligible. Others feel the present method of seeding teams should be scrapped. There is an even more radical argument that the entire tournament should be abandoned in favour of an even more elite European league.
Yet Ferguson feels the criticism is wide of the mark.
“I do not agree the preliminaries are meaningless and simply a money-making exercise,” he told United Review.
“People are arguing that the big clubs always come through and that the seeded fixtures are a waste of time.
“Obviously the group games are not as dramatic as the knockout final stage, but the critics are missing the point.
“The group system is a league. All sports competitions have a starting point that includes the minnows, from the FA Cup to Wimbledon in tennis, or the Open in golf.
“You can’t start with the FA Cup final, or Wimbledon final and cut out the competitive build-up.
“When you put it like that, it is nonsense of course. But that has not prevented a spate of recent criticism and accusations of the game exploiting the fans.”
What do you think? Have your say.

Teams like United and Arsenal, playing teams like Real Madrid, Juventus or Bayern Munich every week, instead of Stoke.
Sure, it's not great news for Stoke, but I'm not a Stoke fan and United should have no obligation to support other teams, like they do in the premier league.
Relegation to the domestic league would probably have a European super league filled with all the top premier league teams anyway.
There wouldn't be a boring game in the fixture list

I heartily disagree with england, or any other country having 4 teams enter, runners up at best should qualify, but a champions league spot for finishing 4th is tantamount to fraud.
The sponsorship and tv rights will make it hard to budge from its current format for quite a while unless someone really puts their chopper on the block and receives support from far and wide.
i've no idea what the next incarnation would be, but i hope it's not a super league. i enjoy the domestic game and all the trappings that come with it enormously.

be careful what you wish for, the qualifying league stages are dire and only get exciting as a knockout cup. do you really want to see united on a regular basis with a team set up NOT TO LOSE.

The obscene amounts of money going round football leave a bad taste and it's clear that they want to get as much money out of the armchair fan as they can.
Why should the bigger teams be protected from going out in the earlier rounds? Money. Why do we have to endure the league stage of the CL? Money. Why do we have 4 teams from the richer leagues? Money. Although impossible, it'd be nice to see a competition where football and the fans were considered.

What would the EPL look like without United, Chelsea and Liverpool? Or the Spanish League without Barca and Real? Pretty dire. Luckily United are currently against all of the proposals but, if it looked like it was about to happen, they couldn't afford to be left behind.

When Utd won the European Cup in '68,they were England's Champions, the only team allowed to compete.Malta's Hibernian,Yugoslavia gave us Sarejevo, then Poland's Gornik,Then Real in the Semi's,finally Benfica. 9 games,6 of which could now be classed as "routine".
2008, once passed the league stage, saw Utd play 2 games against Lyon,Roma,Barca then Chelsea. 2009 we played Inter,Porto,Arsenal then Barca. Big teams-Big games!
To be winners now as opposed to years gone by is infinately more difficult-fact. However the league format is the problem, but sometimes even the big teams do fail,Utd in 2004 for instance!
Maybe introduce a knock-out format of seed vs non-seed,thus giving the game more spice. But that will have it's critics.
The Champions League will always have its fair share of detractors but one thing is certain- the winners,9 times out of 10 ARE THE BEST TEAM!

We're discussing the merits of a European Super League. So why is a City fan posting on here? Don't you find that Berties are always going on about what they're going to be doing in the future. And of course they always fail. I see it's got to the players as well. Apparently Tevez is deaming about scoring against United. pmsl

Sparky was the best ever (01/10/2009 at 13:34)
So you're saying the best teams in Europe playing each other regularly would be boring? 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Why does the premier league have that?
Sparky was the best ever (01/10/2009 at 13:58)
I'm impressed by your ability to deduce I don't attend games based on my post. Sadly, you're wong, but nice try. I was born in Manchester and used to be a LMTB holder. I would go to every home game for years. I've since moved, but that wouldn't stop me traveling Europe to watch games. Sure the crowds would be much different, because there'd be a definite home advantage due to much fewer traveling fans, but ultimately, it would still be a case of teams that can't win away would not have a chance of winning the league. That's no different than mid-table city last year. The real difference is there'd be no crap teams like Portsmouth or Stoke in the fixture list. Every game would be big and the league would be the best of the best every week.
Just as premier league teams resigned from the first division and formed the premier league, so I'm sure will the cream of the European clubs resign from their premier domestic leagues and form a Super league. The incentive for winning the domestic title would be promotion to the Super league, which is a much greater incentive than it is now, where coming 2nd or 3rd gets you in the CL. It would be win - win, because the domestic competition would be more competitive and winners would not always be the same 3 or four teams, as they will have moved on to the Super league.
As for this: "sparky is going to be the best ever", When Fergie retires and we recall agent Hughes to Old Trafford, you may be right.

after last nights game i may owe you an apology.
last nights game was a bit of a throwback A REAL EUROPEAN CUP TIE. 2 teams having a real go at winning the game. not something that we see to often.

Slightly disagree, whilst I admit it's tougher now to win once you've qualified - this is balanced by the fact that years ago entry was much harder as only league winners gained entry. In England this involved a tough 42 match program against more competitive sides than you have now.
United (99) and Liverpool (05) wouldnt have even had the opportunity to take part...
So some people who play down the 70's/80's achievements of Forest, Liverpool and Villa for winning the European Cup when it was 'easier' are off the mark.. It's as tough as its ever been.
bobbydazzler (02/10/2009 at 09:56)
i am not a fan of the champions leaugue format especillay the group stages. but you are wrong about it being as difficult back then forget the qualification criteria it is sadly no longer just a team for national champions. wolfsburg remeber where a 4 th seeded team.
nowadays you have to get through and you could conceivably be drawn against
4 spanish teams
4 italian teams
3 german teams
3 french teams
3 other english teams
2 dutch teams
2 portugeese team
then the minnows and also rans
its is far far more difficult nowadays to with the champions league that it was the old european cup. but give me the european cup format anyday of the week.
