Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has allowed the 28-year-old, who played in Saturday night's World Cup victory in Cyprus, to return to Manchester for scans on the muscle problem.
Trapattoni said the decision had been taken in an effort to prevent the damage from getting any worse and incurring a lengthy lay-off.
He said: "Today, he could not play because he had a bleed on the calf. He couldn't run today.
"I told him to be careful because when you pull that muscle, it is two months.
"It was not just for me, it was also for the club he must decide."
What is your verdict on O'Shea's early season form? Have your say.

Every club would love to have a John O'Shea, his type of player is all too rare a commodity. He has played a multitude of positions for United, even pulling on the goalie gloves in one game, and never has he really let the team down. He may not be flashy, he may lack some of the skills that certain players have, but you can never question his commitment. He is what is called a "Utility Man" by some, a player you can rely on to play any position at any time and know you will get 100% from him. Does he get caught out now again, of course he does, but then, so do those players that folks refer to as "Superstars."
He is Manchester United through and through and the club is lucky to have such a willing hand to turn to in any situation.

oshea as a defender is a very very good back up player and rarely lets us down.
oshea as a central midfield player was alltogether a different prospect more blue square premier than premier standard hopefully we will never see him play there again.

On the bright side at least we might be able to compete on the field because now it will be 11 vs 11. Not dismissing his committment or enthusiasm, just pointing out that on ability he should'nt be in the team.
We have good players in reserve who find their way to the 1st team blocked by the likes of O'Shea,DeLaet being a prime example. These players need experience, but will Fergie give them the chance?

I was also annoyed O'shea didn't win the PFA young player award that year, but it was actually Jermaine Jenus who won it that year not Rooney, which made it even worse!!

Got to ask mate - How old are you. This is not a derisory comment in terms that I think you are infantile, more to find out how long you have been a United Fan. I guess you were not a supporter in the 70's and 80's, probably mid to late 90's. Am i right???

You have to feel sorry for jos he has served this club well and now when he is in a prime position he gets a knock ok he is not the best player in the league or the club but you need clubmen like him to win things and provide a balance any manager needs a few who come under the mr reliable tab.

Okay Danny, maybe it's about time you did your homework on this. Just take a look at the profile of many of Fergies successful fledglings, try Wikipedia. Then look at the players that failed at United. If you were to accuse SAF of not promoting young kids at the PFA awards, you would be laughed out of the building. John O'Shea is an example himself and whilst he is no Ryan Giggs or Dennis Irwin, he is a fine squad player. He does his job effectively if unspectacularly.
If you care to look a the careers of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes etc, you would see he has carefully nurtured their careers. Most of them hardly did anything in the first team, until they were around 20 years of age.
He has gone on record, that he expects his youngsters to bloom this season. He has staked his reputation on it by not usng his cheque book......allegedly.
The time for recriminations on Fergie is at the end of a season of failure, not at the beginning, of what seems so far, a typical United start. If you can't have faith in this guy, why do you bother supporting United at all. You must be permanently depressed or as some have indicated, a mischievous City fan.
If you are United fan, cheer up mate. If you are a City fan I feel sorry for you.

How acn you talk about Scholes and Giggs we are now in 2009
The only thing Fergie is interested in his own Bank account. He forgot United completely when MM made him look stupid.
Fergie is a one man show who is out dated!

Im sorry Danny, but the guy is a winner. Only 4 months ago he completed a season where we won three trophies and got to the final of the Champions League. He can't be past it after a season like that. He is at work at 7 am, he lives and breaths United. I know he makes mistakes but so do all of us. You are criticising the most success manager in English football history. Didn't do so bad in Scotland either.
I am really sorry mate, but the facts fly in the face of your argument. However, if you have truly supported United that long, your opinion should be respected, if not agreed with.
