United reserves 5 Bury reserves 0

UNITED Reserves made an impressive start to the defence of the Manchester Senior Cup against Bury at Moss Lane on Thursday night.

The Reds, who beat Bolton Wanderers last May to lift the trophy, rarely looked in any danger of coming second best after racing to a 3-0 lead at the interval.

Sam Hewson put them in front in the sixth minute and the lead was doubled just after the half-hour with Federico Macheda scoring from the penalty spot after skipper Corry Evans had been fouled inside the box.

Cameron Stewart put United in the clear with the third goal nine minutes before the break.

Second-half goals from Macheda and defender Scott Moffatt sealed an emphatic victory for the Reds.

Must be worth getting Macheda on the bench in the next few games. The guy can score and would be a worthy addition in the last 10-15 if things are looking a little ropey...

Seems like Ole's gonna have yet another good year for the reds, he's a good lad.

at least Kiko can take penalties.

Ole the next Utd manager. Hope Fergie promotes him to No 2 on his final season to show him the ropes

How many of these youngsters do you think actually have a chance of breaking into the first team in the next two years?

Kiko should be a regular as should Tosic would be worth putting some players out to grass.
Perhaps its time for Fergie and Phelan to take over the reserves and let Ole take over the riegns.

I think mecheda should be a first team player when roo or berb isnt fit.....lets face it at 18 years of age he is light years ahead of our old bench warmer tevez and is so so much more skill full and will be in italys fist team in a few years time?if not sooner.

Hewson seems to have knack of scoring goals from mf both in reservces and when on loan - could be good prospect - Cameron Stewart has aslo looked good from what have seen - anyone seen enough of him to comment??

Petrucci was pictured on Mutv watching the Academy game last weekend. Commentator said he should be back playing fairly soon.

I thought Maggie Eikram and Sam Hewson have grown in stature since last season. Still not sure if either will make it at United but they are being given a chance, at least. Not sure that I agree with Ole's formation and selection. He seems to prefer playing a 4-5-1, with the 5 being conventional midfielders and not forwards. It's not a formation that the first team would play and I don't see what Macheda will really get from being a lone striker in the reserves and part of a pair in the first team.

Let's not forget the reserves on loan as well. Cleverly seems to be doing well at Watford 2 goals in the first 2 games and first choice midfielder. Simpson played 3 for 3 at Newcastle he should have had more chances at United. No sign of Possebon at Sporting Braga yet though. And Drinkwater and Heaton are not first choices at Huddersfield and QPR respectively. Ljajic seems to be playing regularly for Partizan (bet Tosic wishes he had stayed there too). Diouf seems to be playing regularly in Molde too. Almost enough for a full team there!
