MANCHESTER United suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Premier League minnows Burnley at Turf Moor.
Robbie Blake's volley after 19 minutes proved decisive as Reds midfielder Michael Carrick saw a penalty saved by Brian Jensen just before half time.
United, who started with Michael Owen up front, piled on the pressure after the break but could find no way through.
Just 90 Premier League minutes gone and already Sir Alex Ferguson's rotation system has kicked in.
Three days after opening the season with a 1-0 Old Trafford win against Bimringham City Fergie shuffled his pack with Darren Fletcher, Nani and Fabio completely left out of the 18 on duty while Sunday starters Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia given bench seats.
He went with Owen up front, and this was a big an occasion for the 29-year-old - especially considering his injury time miss against Birmingham in front of the Stretford End was still fresh in the mind.
Perhaps that was why Owen risked a yellow card for playing on and putting the ball in the net after four minutes. His first one-on-one with keeper Jensen saw his shot blocked and he stuck the follow up home despite whistle. Maybe the striker realised he had to brush up on his finishing or possibly had an inkling that goal opportunities would be limited against the rampant newcomers.
United disappointment
With England boss Fabio Capello in the Turf Moor stands once again United's new boy failed to impress as the turgid evening wore on.
Considering United have played with composure and kept their nerve in Europe's most hostile environments the Turf Moor experience seemed to unhinge them completely.
Yes it was loud and there was an edge to the atmosphere but it was nothing new to a squad of internationals who've tackled the most ear-splitting and nasty atmospheres the Champions League can throw up.
The champions never looked at ease and Burnley came at them in waves. The Reds helped the newcomers by giving the ball away.
Burnley's strike force of Steven Fletcher and Martin Paterson served notice that they wouldn't be overshadowed by the Wayne Rooney and Owen combo.
After only 19 minutes a deep cross from Stephen Jordan caught Patrice Evra back-pedalling and Robbie Blake smashed the ball home.
There was precious little response from the title holders and when Owen glanced rather than get full forehead on a cross from Wes Brown in the 36th minute you began to suspect United were going to struggle big time to turn this around.
It was confirmed when goalscorer Blake brought Evra down in the box and Carrick's poor penalty at the end of the first half summed up United's misery.
You'd always bank on a United fightback of some description on such occasions when they've under-performed to this extent and especially after they've listened to Fergie at half time. But it was a muted response from the Reds.
Only an excellent save from keeper Jensen when Rooney put Ryan Giggs through counted as some form of answer. As Burnley's efforts drained them physically the Reds enjoyed more joy in attack but it was a desperate rather than measured effort to save face.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Seriously, no midifeld creativity, Owen looked useless, Rooney off the pace, Berbaflop (Words fail me).

Carrick was ball watching for the goal, missed a pen and generally looked diabolical. Park is the nearly man, and I think its time to say good bye, Giggs was at times the least rubbish player on the pitch, though he shouldnt be relied upon to start, Owen was poor, Berba was poor, Rooney should have seen a red.
No imagination - and people talk about how we lacked that against Barca, well this was Burnley! No leadership. No resolve. The scally striker at Burnley showed more heart than our team combined.
80 million in the bank and no one to spend it on? Yeah right. Its going to service debt and Fergie has entered a state of co-dependency with the greedy Glazers.
The sad reality is we have got but one star, Rooney, and the rest are either good players or average, and we cannot afford average and we need some top class players. Vidic and Rio are undoubtedly world class defenders, but Rio is getting injured every time he goes to the bathroom and Vidic might be ruled by his Spain-loving wife...
I want new ownership and new players - early on in the season, granted, but theres nothing there that gives reason for optimism.
Result of the game for us was Rooney only getting a yellow...
gutted!

Boy they miss two people badly Ronaldo and a decent manager. Joe Mourino Jose Mourino
This team he picked would not even survive in the Championship his tactics are so poor he really should go ASAP.
Did he not pay 18 million for a winger who can get behind the opposition defence? So what on earth is Park doing playing for United tonight both Tosic who has immense skill and Valencia should have started along with Fabio or Richie de Laet Kiko should be in the center best finisher according to Fergie and makes me wonder why he paid 30 million for Berbatov and sits him on the bench.
Why was not Owen or Rooney running up and grabbing the ball to take the penalty the whole team lacks direction they look out of sorts even Anderson would have buried that penalty.
How can people defend Fergie just glad I have to work tonight?
I knew Carrick would not score even before he took the penalty it stood out he useless game after game United,s team is just full of squad players, no offers from Madrid or Barcelona for Rio Carrick if we tried to sell Berbatov we would not get `15 million. For Brown and O,Shea and Fletcher and Park we would be very lucky to get 10 million for the lot, then we will be watching Giggs and Scholes until Alex gets the sack.
The sad thing for a young talented player at United under Fergie you will not get the chances you would under a manager like Wenger.
Sub Valencia for Anderson another poor change Park should have been subbed. In fact why was he on the pitch in the first place?
One thing for sure United will not win any trophies this season, they remind me of Newcastle last season.
Brown and Carrick can forget about an England career then to top it all he brings on Gary Neville.
Any young player should think twice before joining United because it does not matter ho much talent you have you wont get chance to shine players are supposed to move forward they go back wards the only ones who go forward go to Madrid Barcelona or Italy.
Rooney is still unable to control himself.
Bob lord would be laughing his head off at this United display. Get Fergie and Phelan out.
