SIR Alex Ferguson looks to have beaten off competiton from Arsenal and Inter Milan for French starlet Gabriel Obertan thanks to his friendship with Bordeaux boss and former Reds centre back Laurent Blanc.
The 20-year-old is having a medical and reports in France say a £3million fee has been agreed and that Obertan will sign a four-year contract.
Obertan is a 6ft 1 in wide player who can perform on either flank, central midfield and also up front. He is a product of France's famous Clairefontaine national youth football academy.
The French club's president Jean-Louis Triaud had indicated that there was a "strong likelihood" that the transfer was due to go ahead.
It is now understood the youngster is set to make the official switch this week.
Blanc allowed the player to go on loan last season to Lorient as Bordeaux were contesting the French Ligue 1 title and his playing time had been limited.
But the French World Cup winner, who played for the Reds between 2001 and 2003, is clearly convinced Obertan has a future at Old Trafford.
Obertan has played more than 50 league matches for Bordeaux since 2006 and has progressed through all levels of French international football to the Under-21 side and scored against England in March in a friendly.
Obertan's capture will further add to the list of wingers at United including £16m Antonio Valencia from Wigan and 22-year-old Zoran Tosic, bought in January from Partizan Belgrade.
Are you happy with United's transfer activity so far this summer? Have your say.

MEN words, so I figure SAF is not just looking at him as a 'winger', but a potential talent that he can utilise in a number of positions.

I'm not getting carried away with this... At present he looks like a Nani type buy. From what I have read, Obertan seemed to have struggled in a very basic league.

How is the end for Tosic?
The plan when for Tosic when he arrived in January was to give him 6 months prep work ahead of this coming season.
They have done a fantastic job with him and he is fully fit and ready now.
You are in for one hell of surprise where this lad is concerned, because he is quality.
People shouldn't judge him by what they saw in the U-21's, becausee for the majority, it was if he was solely Serbia. It was like one man against 11.
I'll admit when I first saw him in January I thought he had no chance and wasn't Premier League material at all, but a few months on I can say I was wrong.
He has worked really hard and is going to be a big player for us.

and even more interesting to see if he plays with two wingers ( as apposed to a winger and park, fletch or giggs tucking in from the other flank)
my biggest hope for this season is that ando fulfills his potential, because if he does that , then together with a fully fit and resurgent Hargo in central midfield i believe we could have a powerhouse midfield to match our rivals: Chelsea - essien/lampard, Liverpool - Mascherano/Alonso, Arsenal - fabregas/(not worth mentioning)

We now have Valencia Nani Tosic as proper wingers, Park plays more of a wide schemer role usually away from home because of his workrate and if Obertan does come in i think he will be used in a veriety of positions on both wings and as a striker looking to mould him into our Henry
i would like us to follow up interest in Douglas Costa as the reviews ive heard about him are very exciting and we need someone who can produce the unexpected, also id like an experienced anchorman in centre mid possibly on loan till january till Hargreaves is back, Senna, Makelele, Vieria???

Maybe I was being harsh, but he still seems some way from a first team place. He has just turned 22, and is still not ready. Surely he is still behind Nani, and we are looking for more wingers. I have heard people say he has looked poor in the reserves too, but I haven't seen that first hand.
Checking his stats (ESPN) he is 5'7", which isn't too small really.
I trust your informed words though, and I do hope he proves to be a good player. Too early to judge.
If he's not physically ready, maybe we need to send him out on loan until he is?
Midfield General (07/07/2009 at 10:49)
He has just signed on permanently there though, so we've probably missed our chance this year.
