The 23-year-old Ecuadorian completed his £16m move to Old Trafford from Wigan on Tuesday hoping to go some way to filling Cristiano Ronaldo's boots.
"Antonio is a diamond of a kid. A real top, top boy," new Sunderland manager Bruce told M.E.N. Sport.
"He is a wonderful player and I cannot speak highly enough of him."
Valencia, who scored three goals for Wigan last season, is expected to help fill the void left by Ronaldo following the star winger's £80m move to Real Madrid.
And Bruce, who inherited Valencia when he became Wigan boss in November 2007, has little doubt that the winger will cope on the bigger stage.
"It is unfair for anyone to make comparisons with Ronaldo. For anyone having to endure that it would be struggle.
"Forget the Ronaldo's heir business and let the fans and United team-mates judge him as a player in his own right.
"If they do that they won't be disappointed. Certainly his new colleagues would be delighted with him because he is a team player.
"For me he is the complete player. He is prepared to track back and do the leg work. He is big and powerful and let me tell you he is a real tough cookie.
"Nobody will knock Antonio off the ball. He's very hard. He has got terrific strength and certainly not a shrinking violet.
"How many wingers can you say that about?
Explosive
"He is wonderfully quick as well. Excellent and explosive off the mark.
"There aren't many wingers like him around these days. If I could give United fans a picture of what they could be buying then I'd say he is not unlike my former team-mate in the early 90s, Andrei Kanchelskis.
"Andrei was quick, strong and able to steam past a defender. Antonio is very similar.
"His stats at Wigan were phenomenal. He ran further than anyone else, worked harder than anyone else and did all that at pace. It was tremendous.
"Any United fan who remembers the Wigan match at Old Trafford in January when United won 1-0, Valencia was superb that game.
"I think that was the deciding night for Sir Alex Ferguson. I think he had him watched every game after that.
"Valencia wasn't dragged down by the stage that night but will he sustain it in a United shirt? I think he can handle it because he is a strong and great character," added Bruce. "I think he'll flourish on the big stage.
"He will improve and become a better player playing with the calibre of player he'll be alongside at Old Trafford."
Valencia will certainly have to up his goal-scoring game if he is going to make inroads into helping to make up for the loss of Ronaldo's output. "He will never be a Cristiano Ronaldo and scoring is the one area he really does have to improve," said Bruce.
"But where is there another winger like Ronaldo who scores that many goals? Normally you are looking for your wide players to contribute double figures and I think if he becomes a little bit more selfish then Antonio can supply that amount."
What are you expecting from Valencia? Have your say.

If Nani and Berbatov can fulfill their potential (which they won't) United could be unstopable next season.

Even after all these years people still doubt Fergie. Did anyone doubt Horatio Nelson, with victory after victory? I thought we were supposed to support our team. When we win, we should shout and shout, when we lose we should shout louder!! We lost Ronaldo so let us get behind Fergie!!
Horatio would not have it any other way.

As for goal scoring, of course it's an area he needs to improve but I recall the same being said of a certain Portuguese player who in the seasons 2003-2005 had scored a mere 15 goals in 90 first team appearances.

I doubt SAF will burden him with the No7 shirt as it comes with alot of expectation I also dont think he'll be the only signing as there would be an awful lot of pressure on him as people would pigeon hole him as the new Ronaldo- I expect another 1-2 to help the squad acclimatise to the 2 big departures (wel1 and a half).
I really hope the fascists dont steal a march on us and get Benzema he'd be an ideal recruit.....We'll see!!

While I can't see a similarity to Kanchelskis, who was quicker than Valencia, more direct and scored more goals, I would be delighted if he turned out as good a player, but let's just let him be his own man. Hopefullt he willl settle in well and the United crowd will give him their full support, as the raw materials are there and we just need to build on them to make him an effective player.

He has had 2 years in the Premier League and has been thoroughly scrutinised. His fitness record has been good and there is, therefore, a much better chance that the Saha and Hargreaves fiascos, for example, wont be repeated. He has looked good consistently in the most physical and competitive league in the world and not been "discovered" plying his trade where it is more easy to look promising while not being anything like close enough to the real deal. We've had a few too many of those.
I am optimistic he is closer as a signing to a Vidic and Evra than the list of disappointments that are often mentioned.

If I was a young kid and Arsenal, Chelsea, Barca etc. gave me my chance then suddenly United came in for me, there will only be one answer. I will sign for free. So Ronaldo is gone, no worries, he is history.
Now let us all welcome Valencia. Should he be compared to Ronaldo? Did he play for us or a top team before? How stupid is to even think of comparing him? Why not just see what he will bring and how he will affect the team. Valencia will score around 10 goals a season, which for a true traditional winger is sufficient. That was the number of goals we got from Becks and Giggs in their prime per season. Ronaldo was a selfish player who left us exposed a lot and lost the ball too easily. I am so not going to miss him. No sour grapes, it was good while it lasted, but seriously, he is not all that he is made out be.
I prefer to see a team play where goals are shared knowing that whoever gets the chance to score is capable. The one player in recent times that we have missed is Saha. His play changed United.
I expect SAF to add 2 more players, a forward and a creative midfield player, even if untried. We will win the league again in 09/10 season.
Live the dream and support the team.
United forever!

we have at OT, he should be a terrific addition, and constant feeder of
the ball from out wide (which is something Ronaldo did not provide).
Up the Reds!
