The 23-year-old Ecuador international has signed a four-year contract after moving for an undisclosed fee.
Valencia, who joins from Wigan where he scored three goals last season, is expected to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo following the star winger’s £80million move to Real Madrid.
Valencia’s signature is reported to have cost United in the region of £16 million with the winger describing the move as a “dream”.
“Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me,” he said.
“I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here.
“Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started.”
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he had tracked Valencia’s progress since his arrival at Wigan two seasons ago.
“Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan,” he said.
“I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team.”
Certainly most United fans - and probably Ferguson himself - would be disappointed if there were not further signings by September 1 given the problems he is juggling with.
Potential
As well as Ronaldo, the loss of Carlos Tevez, seemingly bound for rivals Manchester City, leaves another gap.
Karim Benzema has been touted as a potential replacement but has already given vibes he may prefer to go elsewhere, and even then in another year's time.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is another option but the Dutchman is more of a Ruud van Nistelrooy-type figure and Ferguson has been building his teams in a different way of late.
At the back of Ferguson's mind will also be the knowledge Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar are all preparing for what is expected to be their final season of top-flight action, with Gary Neville not far behind.
Twelve months ago, United appeared to have the replacements in place but doubts have emerged over Nani, Anderson and Ben Foster, leaving Ferguson with more big decisions to make.
There are further question marks over midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who is hoping to return from two years wrecked by a tendinitis problem, and record signing Dimitar Berbatov, who was inconsistent in his debut season.
How do you think the squad is shaping up? Have your say.

United cannot complain about bayern and the likes of lyon wanting top dollar for players , afterall united started the ball rolling by taking 80 million for ronaldo

What a stupid comment. Isn't it obvious that SAF isn't looking to Valencia to provide the goals? No wonder you are all just armchair critics, nothing more.

We are going to end up with mediocrity once again, with SAF saying the same BS he does every season: ``I am happy with the squad that I have``.
We need quality and we need it soon!

Fergie let us all down he said he would not sell Mdrid a Virus Valencia may be a good player however 7 goals in 87 appearances is not what we need ,with Anderson still waiting to score his first goal the likes of Giggs Scholes and VDS getting starting roles and mega bucks is total stupidity.
Lets face it we just can,t compete Fergie lost the plot! against Barcelona.
Yes we won the premiership again without the goals of Macheda we would have lost that as well.

We have won the league 3 times in a row, won a CL-Final, and lost one in the last three years, and you write: We are going to end up with mediocrity once again, with SAF saying the same BS he does every season: ``I am happy with the squad that I have``.

Danny from Wimslow - as always, I agree with your assessment.

What I don’t understand is that SAF has worked so hard to make us full fill our potential of being the biggest and the best. He has to be allowed to compete for the best to maintain our position. I don’t think we should pay sill money for 27+ year olds but surely we should compete and try and sign the best up and coming players like Benzema and Aguero. Both these players are special, there value will go up rather than down not that we should consider ourselves a selling club and they can play the out and out striker role but both can play wide in a 4-3-3. Why aren’t we at least bidding for them?
Real Madrid signs the best because they pay the best. We are as big as them but we cannot be afraid to pay the money. The Glazers should realise to accumulate you need to speculate.

'Comparable, if not better than Ronaldo'!? I've heard it all now. So Valencia has the potential to become 'World Player of the Year' and score 40 odd goals every season? These stats you're talking about, does it include the amount of time he ties his laces up, or the number of pre-match stretches he does? Unbelievable.
danny, WILMSLOW (30/06/2009 at 10:38)
Essien slipped through are net as dod Torres how much did we pay for Carrick and Nani and Hargreaves?
Tourre may be a good option at the back.Vds is also poor on crosses cant punch the ball so expect to play the fullseason next year.
Only an idiot would have let both Tevez and Ronaldo leave without having replacements ready.
All it has done as shown United to be inferior to madrid in transfer dealings.
These big name players do not want to come to United why its more than the weather!

As for criticism of our squad over the past few years and SAF "BS" - give over - have you not heard the news, we've been winning the odd thing here and there!
As for Valencia, he looks good to me. Is he Utd class - I'm not sure, but he is young and I guarantee that no-one will be prepared to spend £16m on a player that they think is either unnecessary or unsuitable.
I hope there are more signings, but not just for the sake of it, but either way, lets get behind the team, manager, etc. before a season in which I think we could be better than last (yes - I know CR7 has left!)
