The 21-year-old would almost certainly be part of Giovanni Trapattoni's squad if the Republic of Ireland made it to South Africa next year, providing he could secure regular top flight action.
Everton are among the clubs interested in acquiring Gibson, who made 14 appearances for the Red Devils last season.
However, even though he realises his chances at Old Trafford are likely to be limited, Gibson wants to sign another contract with Sir Alex Ferguson's men.
"My contract is coming to an end so, hopefully, at the end of the month I'll be signing a new one," said Gibson.
"My current deal ends at the end of next season but, normally, a player would enter into new contract talks at the end of this month.
"I've been told that a few clubs had expressed an interest in signing me, but I want to give it a good push and have a proper go at it next season before I decide to go anywhere else."
Gibson has turned in a series of eye-catching displays for United and fired home an excellent matchwinner at Hull on the final day of last season.
Yet it is difficult to see him forcing his way into a midfield that includes Michael Carrick, Anderson and Darren Fletcher, even if Paul Scholes is expected to retire in 12 months' time.
Do you think Gibson is good enough to make it at United? Have your say.

Realistically, as things stand today we probably need about four or five new faces, to maintain our great form of the past two seasons. In Sir Alex we trust!!!

I'm starting to get worried were the goals are going to come from next year - I'd prefer a proven premiership goal scorer over some of the big names from the continent that we are are rumoured to be chasing.

For a club who have ben built on giving youth a chance a lot of our 'supporters' seem to want to discount these young players if they aren't the finshed article after a handful of games!

I wanted your opinion - you know how it was the Corinthians (those South American chaps)creed not to take penalties if they were awarded them?
And how in tennis there were certain chaps who would let the next point drop if they were awarded a point by the umpire if they didn't think it was deserved?
The same with motor racing and cricket and even with that (was it) Reading incident a few seasons back?
And how everyone loved it because they were so sportsmanlike?
Well, it just occurred to me after the Champs League Final that our lads didn't seem to have the passion that we have always been so rightly famous for and that they should have been told (to kind of humiliate them and make it an experience that they'd not want to repeat) applaud Barca so that the world could see that not only could we be successful, rich and so on, but that we could also be sportsmanlike, too.
It could start off in the League Cup, FA Cup, or even (dare I suggest it) in the Prem that on the odd occasion that we lost we would form a guard of honour and clap the winning side off the pitch.
Double win with this you see - we could be seen to be sportsmanlike in defeat AND put the team through a bit of a shake up at the same time.
Mainly the sportsman effect, though...
What do you reckon? Or is football past that? (How sad would that be?)
If Gilly's not out there any other Red is welcome to comment.

Fletcher, O'Shea, rather than like young superstarts, Rooney, Ronaldo did.
Look at Rossi now, he's a top player and we could use a scorer like him,
so selling Gibson might not be the right thing, no one knows how the baking will turn out until it's baked - not even SAF.
Up the Reds!

Thanks for the history lesson - shame you missed the point.
