Lyon striker, Benzema, was always going to be at the top of Ferguson's shopping list this summer, with the United manager knowing Cristiano Ronaldo would quit Old Trafford for Real Madrid.
He also wanted to keep hold of Tevez, but the Argentine's decision to turn down a five-year contract has only intensified the need for more firepower.
The loss of both Ronaldo and Tevez has cost United two of their biggest stars - and Ferguson is desperate to replace them with marquee signings.
Benzema fits that bill perfectly, with a bid of around £30m likely to be enough to tempt Lyon to sell one of the most sought-after players in Europe.
The French club have softened their stance over the 21-year-old over the past week - all but inviting Ferguson to make a bid for a player he has tracked for more than two years.
Lyon sporting director Bernard Lacombe said: "Nobody knows what is going to happen. What should we do if Manchester, who have a lot of cash to spend, want to sign Benzema?"
Also on Ferguson's wish list is Franck Ribery, who despite Bayern Munich's insistence that he is not for sale, should be available at around £40m.
Warchest
Even with the £70m double capture of Benzema and Ribery, Ferguson would still have a massive warchest with which to plunder the transfer market - especially now that the £25m earmarked for Tevez is back in the kitty.
Gremio's Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa is a £20m target, while Wigan's Antonio Valencia is expected to sign for £16m.
And Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is convinced the Ecuador international will develop into a world class performer at Old Trafford.
"I think Antonio is the best wide right player anywhere and that includes Franck Ribery," he said. "If this lad goes to Man United he will be a sensation there.
Class
"Within a few months and over the course of a season the United supporters would come to worship this lad.
"We see him week-in week-out in games and in training and he's a world class player.
"He doesn't play the same way as Ronaldo. There is no show or flash, but he's a world class player and he'll take some replacing. No-one tackles him or takes the ball off him because they can't get near him.
"At the kind of money that's been talked about for Antonio he'd be an absolute steal. United appear to be getting £80m for Ronaldo and they would be paying out a fraction of that for Valencia so it would be great business because this boy has got immense ability."
Meanwhile, United have also been linked with Everton youngster Jack Rodwell.

Benzema would be a great capture which would wet the appetite, also the Rodwell link at the bottom of the page sounds interesting maybe we could stick Gibson in as part of the package?
Costa:at half the buyout clause would be a good deal for us as he's rated as quite a prodigious talent.
For me Valencia should come but not for more than 15/16mill I think he'd play a fair bit as a CM as he's got great versatility and played well against Argentina the other week.
Like the look of Asenjo, the Spain U21 keeper, looks like he could be a bit of a player.
Let the games begin my friends.

As for the article:
Benzema is worth 30m.
Ribery is worth 40m, if we can get him for that, never mind his age, consider the value his contribution to winning trophies would add.
Douglas Costa is probably not a player many in here have seen play an entire game, but if the rumours are correct he sound interesting.
Valencia is very good, and if SAF feels he is worth 16m, he probably is.
As for those nouveau riche: I think the Kaka saga proved that a club bidding fantasy amounts don't mean anything as long as the player doesn't have any interest in the move ;-)

Ha ha ha ha ha, Tevez couldn't hit a barn door at United, id love to see him alongside Bellamy! Ha ha, 10 goals a season between them against poor teams, City will struggle more than ever this year, its turned into a lame ducks final payday just like it was when Seaman and Fowler were going their, Elephants graveyard!

How exactly is Benzema un proven? He has scored 12 champions league goals, not bad for a 21 year old and only 1 less than the scousers target villa, who is 26! Just because somebody is young doesn't make them unproven or in experienced.Look back at when United played Lyon, Benzema scored a pretty good goal.
Look at the stats, dont be so naive. Would u rather ur team spent them same money on sum1 like berbatov or a 30 year old like Shevchenko?

if he wants to come then he has the right age and attributes. we are also looking at vucinic supposedly who is a good player - but not prolific. Bringing in benzema and valencia should adequately make up for ronaldo but we will play a bit differently - replace a creative goal-scorer with a creative goal-creator. that could be anderson given a different role - but he would need to start scoring a few - or this douglas costa. to get benzema, valencia and costa + 30m cash would seem to be good business for us. forget ribery unless they lower the price to a more sensible figure. i cannot see us going to 40m unless fergie is adamant that he is the creative player he covets. A cheaper option would be david silva

What like you did with Kaka...I am sure he was finally sold 40 mill short of what you offered..You have and never will be able to compete for the top players...

Available on the Auto Trader website, the player's black Carrera 2 Tiptronic S has a 3.8-litre engine, 16,000 miles on the clock and zips from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds (presumably without inexplicably toppling over).
