Twelve months ago today the Korean was celebrating United's victory over Wigan Athletic which clinched the Reds' second successive title.
He had played at the JJB Stadium and had been in Sir Alex Ferguson's XI for the penultimate league match against West Ham.
Most significantly Park had been the United manager's choice in the four European Cup matches prior to securing their place ub the final at Moscow.
Occasions
He had started both quarter-final legs against Roma and both semi-final ties with Barcelona. Park was in elite company as only Edwin Van der Sar, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick had been on Fergie's team sheet for those big Euro occasions.
As much as he could be, the midfielder must have been pretty confident he would be starting against Chelsea in the biggest match of his life in Moscow.
The Dutchman and the three Englishman were all in Fergie's XI at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Amazingly, Park didn't even make the subs bench. The United boss has described leaving the Korean out of the squad in Russia as one of his most difficult decisions ever.
The Korean media refer to it as the "Moscow nightmare" having turned up in force in Russia expecting their country's star to play.
After Park opened the goalscoring against Arsenal in the Emirates Stadium last week to book United's place in Rome Fergie has good as guaranteed the Korean wouldn't suffer the same torment again.
"I don't think he'll be disappointed this time," was Ferguson's response to a question about Park's involvement against Barcelona in Italy.
The 28-year-old, however, won't count his chickens.
"If I play in Rome it would be great because I didn't play last season. But you don't know. There are two weeks left yet," he told M.E.N. Sport.
"I must show on the pitch in that time that I deserve to be in the final. I have to keep my form up and show my ability on the pitch.
"I have heard and read in the media that the manager has said I should be okay for the Champions League final. He has told the press but he hasn't said anything to me!
"So I just will have to do my best in the meantime. I am not going to get excited yet!
"It was hard to take not being in the Moscow team. But all the players want to be in the big games. We all want to be in the Champions League final.
"But so many players have never even reached that stage of the tournament. Some great players have not even had a chance of getting there. But at least I had a chance.
"It was a big heartbreak but I believed I would get back again with Manchester United. I felt certain it would happen again soon so I comforted myself with that.
Winners
"I am certainly at the right club to believe I could get back again.
"No European Cup winner has ever retained the Champions League and not many winners have actually got back to the final but I never lost faith that United could do it and I might have a chance again.
"I have never lost the belief that I would play in a Champions League final. I knew we could get there. Now we are back and I just hope it is different for me this time.
"But I won't believe anything until the night. Up until then I will still be proving myself on the pitch."
Would you play Park in the Champions League final? Have your say.

Unfortunately due to Fletcher's exclusion from the final the dreaded nightmare scenario of Park playing in Rome is now a reality. Granted his performances have slightly improved over the last few games but he quite simply is still not good enough. Surely he cannot be played because he was left out last year and now it's his 'turn'. It's the price we may very well pay for that bad refereeing decision at the Emirates.
I would play him in every game until the end of the season to be honest, he is in good form, deserves to play.
Well, my worry isn't that Parky will get a game because it's 'his turn' because I feel that he's been a key contributor to the success during the campaign so far and he can come up with the workrate that everyone goes on about Tevez being so popular for....my worry is that the same will apply, if not more so, to Scholesey who is not on the money and hasn't been all season.
Charles Patrick Parks inclusion will not be regarded as a bad thing by any means. For me Park was a certain starter regardless of Fletcher's suspension as he not only aides our attacking play but he is also brilliant at supporting the full backs.
Without Abdial and Alves it shouldnt be as difficult a task but after his performances lately he easily deserves a place on the teamsheet.
Like he says theres still a couple of weeks left, but for me the RW spot will be his.
And after such a terrific season dont you think you could be supporting our players?
Park is a quality player, and I hope he gets a run-out in the final. His chances are good cos Fergie played him in both semis last year, and Fergie picks the right players for the opposition.
The thing with Park is that you have to have a good understanding of football and watch him not just when he's on the ball to realise his effect on the game - in this way he's the polar opposite to a Ronaldo. Thats why top coaches like Hiddink and Fergie appreciate him, but some fans don't. He could definitely do with scoring more goals (like when he was at PSV), but another thing that is underrated is his passing in the final third.
I'd add that match-going United fans love him - more so than Ronaldo (not saying hes a better player of course, just that match-going United fans have more love for Park).
SAF: "Park is one of the most underrated players in the game."
Ferdinand: "He's a real players' player. Up there with best in world for movement, and so intelligent and direct with runs off the ball. His work-rate is unreal, he adds a dimension no other player brings to the team. He's underrated, a real top player."
You clearly have not been watching alot of Manchesters european nights in the latter stages. If you had, you'd realise that park has been influencial in the latter stages.
Fact rooney on the wing means ronaldo upfront you watch...
therefore park, even if fletcher was playing, would have started.
I don't understand people who knock the likes of Park, O'Shea and until recently Fletcher. They are invaluable to the team. Park has as much energy as Tevez and his first touch is way, way better. His performances lately have been excellent and he has been voted man of the match in several papers. What more do you people want? Some of you wouldn't recognise talent if you tripped over it. I quote, 'Unfortunately due to Fletcher's exclusion' Not long ago Fletcher's inclusion would have provoked vitriolic comments. They are all United players and should receive the respect they deserve..
I don't think that Park playing is a 'nightmare scenario' - far from it. I think that Park's harrying of the opposition, especially ball-playing opponents like those of Barcelona, is essential. It knocks them out of their stride and tires them. Park wins back a lot of balls and makes opportunities for his team mates. In the last few games he has shown good form. I think He will be picked for these reasons.
Park and Rooney wide with Giggs Anderson and Carrick in the middle. Ronny up front so this gives us Berbie and Tevez to come on and freshen up the attack. Lets hope we can start JOS RIO VIDIC AND EVRA that is why it is so important that the Hull game is a nothing game so we can rest players.
Park may have been a surprise pick v Arsenal, but cometh the hour cometh the man.I didn't think he'd finish the chance but he did.Like others I think he's got as much energy as Tevez and is actually more disciplined in his role.It would be harsh on any player who doesn't play but SAF has the responsibility to pick the team to beat Barcelona.Sentiment won't enter into it.60-40 he'll play. (and be substituted)
My Team would be:
-----------------VDS-----------------
Oshea---------Rio-------Vidic--------Evra
------Carrick---------------Anderson-------
Ronaldo---------------------------------Park
------------Rooney------ Tevez--------------
Subs: Foster, Rafael, Scholes, Berbatov, Macheda, Giggs, Evans
Notable absentees left out of 18 man squad.
Its a toss up between Macheda and Nani. with Macheda being from Rome think SAF will pick him ahead of Nani
Welbeck, Fabio, Gibson, Kuzschack,
suspended: Fletcher
injured, Neville, Brown and Hargreaves
It must not have gone unnoticed to all United fans that SAF picks his team as per the opponents of the day and any forthcoming match if he wants to rest some players. Sometimes he gets it wrong like against Fulham when United would not be playing for another week and he still rested many regulars. The strength of Barca is its midfield trio of Xavi, Iniesta and Toure. It is clear then that they have to be harassed and denied space in order to cut the supplies to Eto'o, Messi and Henri. It goes without saying that in that scenario Park fits the bill 100%. In my opinion he will be among the first to be included on the team sheet and on merit.
Well said Cyprus Red - not you by any chance s it Kyp?? As for Park - he deserves to play on merit not because of sentimentality. Charles Patrick your memory does not seem to stretch back a year as over there in Barcelona our little korean constantly running and harrassing the catalan fancy dans was the key to getting a result. In Barcelona Park and Tevez were immense and the key men in that game. I would play him as i expect O shea to struggle with Henry's pace so having Park tracking back to help him can help stifle Henry. It is just like Fletch with Park. There are those fans that no matter what they do it will never be enough. A year ago it would have taken fletch scoring a hat-trick of overhead kicks every fortnight to get you lot to take the blinkers off. Yes Park, like Tevez can sometimes be a bit headless chicken-like but it is that harassment that puts opponents off and gets possession back. Or would you prefer we just let Messi, Henry, Iniesta, Xavi and Eto'o have all the time in the world to pick us off as they do in spain week in week out?
Fact..Charles patrick u are a disgrace.fact..park for me is a first team player.fact...only Rooney,Ronaldo,Rio,Vidic and perchance Evra are better than him.Fletcher for me can be as good as Roy keane...fact
Charles Patrick - if you have ever played football you would appreciate Park's value as a team player - his energy deprives the opposition that extra split second of time on the ball, plus whenever he plays with Evra, he covers the left back position when Evra wants to be a left winger.
I hope he is there on the pitch in Rome - on merit alone. Let's not forget his contribution to last season's semi-finals against Barca. Also, some may say he doesn't score enough, but me for one will remember he scored our goal at the Bridge to almost give us victory, and the beauty against Fulham in the FA Cup.
Mostly sensible comments on here, and I am actually slightly surprised. Park will start, he needs to start, and he is the perfect antidote to Barca's flair and movement.
Because of the way Barca' play it is most likely that the team will replicate the away side that played the similar passing Arsenal in the CL SF's.
Obviously Fletch is out, so it does open the door for Scholes who's played much better this last month. Rooney will play wide left what ever happens now. Fergie could play Tevez but that would mean 2 in
CM ( Carrick & Anderson) instead of his recently favoured 3.
I think he'll play 5 across the middle with Carrick the usual defensive foil. Ron will be CF. To me it looks very like 4 ( O'Shakey, Rio, Vid & Patrice) - 1 ( Carrick) - 4 ( Park, Scholes, Anderson & Rooney) - 1 (Ron)
Tevez & The Berb on the bench if required but caution first I feel.
park should definatly play his contribution to the team has been second to none and his style of play will stffle barcas midfield perfectly and he will be able to help out on the counter attack to boot what do whant charles patrick..... jam on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree Charles Patrick- he isn't good enoug and it just goes to show how deluded people are. Rob Lawrence, I play football. Park has played better recently but for me ISN'T good enough for Utd. Compare him with the like of Kanchelskis, Giggs, Beckham, Ronaldo. I don't give 2 hoots that he runs around like a headless chicken
personally, i think anyone who criticises park should be horse-whipped.
rob lawrence if you want an auillary left wing back you must look no further than wayne rooney who many on here believe it is his best position. thankfully saf still see's him as a centre forward. to counteract barca' midfield maestro's we will need to get in their face play park in his best position central midfield. the alternative is giggs who like park sometimes find it difficult to pass to a player in red.
Let me just add that apart from his dynamism Park's skill on the ball has improved
beyond recognition this season.
Charles Patrick don't know anything about football. period.
My Team would be: VDS, Oshea, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Anderson, Ronaldo, Park, Rooney and one of Tevez/Giggs. Definitely not Scholes for speed reason.
Shaff. What are you talking about son? Give me a list of attributes Park has? You will struggle pal. It isn't beating a man, tackling, scoring (although he has 2 recently), or passing is it mate?!! Maybe running a lot, tracking back and creating space. However, that isn't enough for Man Utd. He is a good squad player and his attitude is exceptional, but he shouldn't be regular first team
