SIR Alex Ferguson promised a “full throttle” display – but he was given a white knuckle ride as Porto gave his European champions an almighty fright.
Substitute Mariano’s 89th minute strike puts United’s defence of the trophy in a precarious position ahead of next week's Champions League quarter final second leg.
In truth it could have been much worse on a night when the Portuguese champions looked capable of blowing United away.
Carlos Tevez’ 85th minute goal looked like putting Ferguson’s men in control – even if it would have been cruel on the visitors – but Mariano’s stunner means United have it all to do in Portugal.
Ferguson had spoken of his side’s unique flair for the occasion in the build up to the clash and the ability to keep their tormented supporters on the edge of their seats right to the death.
But even he couldn’t have anticipated what they would serve up against the Portuguese champions.
Falling behind to Cristian Rodriguez’ goal after just four minutes, their defence of the trophy they won in Moscow last May, could have been as good as over by half time.
Only cartoonish defending from Bruno Alves gifted Wayne Rooney with an equaliser in a torrid first half.
Bidding to become the first manager to win back-to-back Champions League titles, Ferguson will know that it will take a much more convincing performance next Wednesday if his side are to progress to the semi finals.
A 1-1 draw was enough to see United knocked out the last time they faced Porto – and 2-2 draw is even more dangerous.
It was with Porto that Jose Mourinho’s legend was born, and their current coach, Jesualdo Ferreira will have caught the eye of suitors from across the continent with the way he took United on at their own game – and very nearly won.
Ferreira insisted attack was the best form of defence and he was as good as his word as he instructed his side to go for the throat.
Perhaps buoyed by the joy Villa had at Old Trafford on Sunday, Porto showed no fear on night when the Theatre of Dreams seemed as dumbstruck as United’s defence.
Still without Rio Ferdinand, who failed to recover from the groin problem he picked up on England duty, United at least had Nemanja Vidic back alongside Jonny Evans at the heart of the defence.
Nerves
But not even the Serb could settle his young partner’s nerves, with Evans suffering an evening to forget.
He may have been one of the discoveries of the season, but Evans’ indecision allowed Lisandro a shot on goal after only three minutes, which Edwin van der Sar was grateful to push away.
But just a minute later, the Northern Ireland international was culpable again when his weak clearance fell to Rodriguez.
The forward didn’t need a second invitation to head into the box and side-footed an effort past the stretching Van der Sar to stun Old Trafford.
United were shell-shocked too – and it wasn’t until Ronaldo rose to head a John O’Shea’s cross in the 13th minute that they looked anything like threatening themselves.
It says everything about Porto’s dominance that it took the most generous of gifts from Bruno Alves to settle the scores.
His blind back pass fell straight to Rooney, who clipped his shot over Helton and into the back of the net.
Even that wasn’t enough to rouse United from their slumber, with Porto still creating the better of the chances – Rodriguez and Lisandro coming close before the break.
Ferguson had his work cut out at half time, and when there was little response from his players he sent for Ryan Giggs to provide more of a cutting edge and composure in possession.
It prompted United’s best period of the match with Rooney almost catching Helton out with a chipped effort, while the Porto keeper had to parry a powerful header from Vidic.
Still the visitors remained threatening themselves with Lisandro forcing a fingertip save from Van der Sar.
It was time for cavalry and on came Carlos Tevez and Gary Neville for Paul Scholes and Evans respectively.
Neville almost had an immediate impact, crossing for Rooney, who failed to keep his glancing header on target in the last 15 minutes.
But it was Tevez – dropped to the bench after a toothless display against Villa on Sunday – who looked like being United’s saviour when he volleyed home Rooney’s flick on with only five minutes on the clock.
It looked like another late salvation for Ferguson’s men – but just as they had done to Villa, Porto stunned them with a last gasp strike.
Mariano, racing towards the back post, latched on to Lisandro’s inviting cross, flicking past Van der Sar.
It was edge of the seat stuff again at Old Trafford – and it could be another rollercoaster ride in Portugal next week.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

He should have switched Fletcher to right back and brought on MACHEDA his adreolin must of been so high just what we needed.
Fergie must blame himself yet again he relies on old legs.
Every team we play hammers us down the right hand side Ronaldo needs to chase the ball back

Credit to VdS tonight for again keeping us in the match. Rooney also played well but the rest of the team seemed to be largely absent. Carrick's midseason form has evaporated; Scholes can no longer control matches; Evra and Vidic are playing like it is the winter of 2006; RB is a complete weakness for us - how much longer are Rafael and Wes going to be out???
The only positive note, if one can be had, is that we only need to win in Porto (as opposed to needing to win by more than 1 goal)...
I fear that the energizing effect of young Macheda's weekend goal has been neutralized by this poor performance.

We need to win at Porto and that cannot be a hopeless proposition because we are on record of having overcome greater odds in CL than the one bore us now. Oh yes we can.

He's become a very big liability to the team.

Watching the game today you would have thought that porto where the home team, no one could pass, tackle or shoot,Fergie is the greatest manager ever but surely he must realise that we are so short in central midfield carrick and scholes are no barrier to any team, scholes at least in the past can say he has done it but he's doing his reputation a diservice in our eyes with his displays now, defensively we know he's poor but he never goes upfront in support either, so now two players in him and giggs who we used to rely on for about 25 goals a season now both get about 3, carrick as usual went missing and the amount of challenges he missed or pulled out of was embarrasing to his predecesors number, also fletcher on the wing is wasted ditto park who's 1st touch was still in korea, what a horrible display from the team, porto should have been out of sight.

All things considered, it wasn't all that bad,
we just have to go there and win, and we can do that!
(Next season though, it's becoming obvious we need a world
class attacking right back and a big striker that stays high)
Up the Reds!

porto didnt resort to the big boot and toatlly outplayed the best midfield in world football even though we outnumbered them 5-4 for first 20 minutes. we could'nt handle there movement passing and pace we were a bloody shambles AGAIN.

Porto were excellent and could go on to the final playing as well as that but we were utterly dire. They made us look like a pub side.
My, my, how things change and how quickly?

I do not believe we have played well since sturggling to beat Blackburn and I don;t count the 4-0 drubbing of Fulham as they did not turn up, and now it is 10 goals against in 4 games.
Our midfiled today was just not in it, all they were doing was watching the porto players pass them all the time either going forward or back to defend. Never rated Carrick and never will he may be able to pass the ball when he is under no pressure but against the big teams he is like Ronaldo goes missing.
Where is the ronaldo of last season I thing he has been sold and a clone put in his place, The best players in the world influence game he is not in anyway doing that this year.
Apart from Rooney, Evra, Park to a degree, and VDS who kept us in the game the rest may just as well have sat in the stands and watched because that was what they were doing on the pitch.
The midfield neither attacked or defend, time and time again there midfield broke with speed and pace while ours just jogged along therefore providing no help to the defence.
I personally do not think we will win in portugal and are definately not showing any sigh that we will win anymore trophies this year.
We play sunderland on saturday and guess what no Evans Rio doubtful so who does that leave for the centre Gary, O'Shea??? don;t think so and they have the same approach as fulham and keep hitting high balls at the defence we will struggle, also because Ricky will have watched how teams have played successfully against us and will do the same.
I keep hearing every time we have played badly, we will have to kick on now, well I am falling asleep waiting for us to do so.

People are always talking about Ronaldo's commitment and passion but the only time I see it is when he scores or appeals for a penalty. Forget a pay rise..give it to Rooney instead and a bit to Fletcher to encourage him to keep improving. He has been very good for us this season. Ronaldo has given up two goals with his lazy efforts and lack of ethic for hard work in ALL parts of the game. Is Fergie getting it wrong? Are his pep talks and motivational tactics losing there effect, there fear??... because nothing seems to be rousing some of our players from this slow motion ride they have individually undertaken. I love Giggs, Scholes and Neville and they still have a role to play but when it clearly isn't working or effective Sir Alex has to take a chance with some of the younger players. Its great he is loyal, but as Manager he needs to put the clubs results first.
I'm not expecting much next week. I know they are capable of doing the job, but whether they can get out of the slump and find the inspiring performance to do it is another Question. Good Luck boys. I'll be cheering and praying !. Keep it up Fletch and Wazza..great effort tonight imo.
