OLE Gunnar Solskjaer’s young reserves produced an impressive and mature display to claim three well deserved points at the Riverside.

Ross Turnbull, Justin Hoyte, Afonso Alves and Julio Arca were all in Middlesbrough's starting line-up, but United’s youngsters were unfazed.

Magnus Eikrem put the Reds in front, in the 14th minute, with a cracking free-kick after Lee Martin’s progress had been halted on the edge of the Boro area.

Boro made frequent visits into Ben Amos’s territory and went closest to finding the target in the 31st minute when Hoyte’s angled drive struck the bar.

The attacking pattern off the game continued after the break, but United always looked capable of hanging on to their slender lead.

UNITED: Amos, Eckersley, Fabio, C Evans (Wootton 90), De Laet, James, Eikrem (Stewart 72), Possebon, Macheda, Martin (Norwood 82), Brady.
Sub not used: Zieler

Watched the match on MUTV. The goal from a Eikrem free kick was brilliant, but really shouldnt have been a free kick from an Arca "foul "tackle.A good workmanlike performance from the Reds 2nd string ,against a strong Boro Side with Alves, Arca appearing.Every time I see Lee Martin I wonder why he isnt given a chance to be at least on the bench with the 1st X1.He has pace ,can beat an opponent, works hard,and has had experience with Rangers ,Stoke ,etc.Fabio was excellent at full back ,and the Irishman Brady had another good game.Oles boys have now won 8 out of last 10 ,and slot into 2nd place ,overtaking city who slip to 3rd place.A very satisfactory performance ,and next up Newcastle away next Monday.

macheda,fabio and martin shud be in first team.fabio for oshea and macheda for dimi

Decent watch. Eckersley looks to be coming along nicely: solid, composed and tidy on the ball. Ditto Evans jnr. Others were all fine but no real stand-outs. In attacking terms, we never quite gelled but Macheda looks a ruthlessly selfish striker (never a bad thing).

Ps Nice goal from Ole's little friend.

I wonder if it's worth bringing Solksjaer to sit by SAF.Solksjaer has always been calm when the pressure is on and that's a good quality.

Where's Tosic? He's not in the reserves and not in the first team.
