Ronaldo predicts 'titanic' battle

CRISTIANO Ronaldo is predicting a 'titanic' battle between Manchester United and Inter Milan in the San Siro tonight.

The world player of the year is aiming to be part of the first side to retain the Champions League trophy since it was formed in 1992.

But there could have been few more arduous tests than the runaway Serie A leaders, who United meet at the same last-16 stage Jose Mourinho knocked them out at in 2004 with eventual winners FC Porto.

And, while Ronaldo is confident the holders will get through, he recognises Inter will not be disposed of without a mighty battle.

"It is going to be a titanic fight," he said. "Inter are top of Serie A which tells you immediately they are a good team who are going to give us a tough game.

"But we are playing well, which should give us confidence. We just have to be ready."

With fellow countryman Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson at odds over when the tie will actually be decided, Ronaldo prefers to concentrate on what would be a good result for the visitors.

Like his manager, the star winger acknowledges United's formidable home record will give them a chance to progress providing their injury-hit squad avoids a similar calamity to the one they suffered on their last visit to the San Siro two years ago when AC Milan scored three times without reply to cause Ferguson more semi-final heartache.

"A good result is a win but if we draw it is not bad because Inter know it will be difficult to beat us in Manchester," added Ronaldo.

It's time to be ruthless. We have the sharp shooters.

On his day Ronaldo is excellent. But surely he must be looking at a three match ban when the video evidence of the Blackburn game is reviewed.

If people start getting 3 game bans for that and the people who assault him go unpunished I am giving up watching football. What was worse??? Dunn's late studs down challenge on his foot or his little girly flick?? Give me a break.

We have the sharp shooters, but only rooney ever takes a shot, I've lost count of the number of games this season where tevez and berba have played the whole game without having one shot

Bristol Steve, perhaps you should check the rules or ask before commenting. The ref saw it and spoke to him. He also saw Dunn's little piece of nastiness, decided both merited a talking to and got on with the game. Your type of refereeing would see teams reduced to five a side. Lots of nasty off the ball stuff going on in this league. Just watch what goes on at corner kicks.

Not sure what to make of the game tonite. Watch Rooney & Berbatov shrink and disappear in this game. Have a nasty feeling...

The reason SWP was banned for 3 games(which I thought was pathetic) was because the ref said he didn't see it and if he did, would have sent him off.

The reason nothing will happen to Ronaldo is that Howard Webb saw what it was and chose to do nothing.

It was a petty kickout and a poor reaction after he got a bit of rough treatment. Its a man's game after all and they both dealt with it!

But Ronaldo definetly needs to make sure thats the last time he reacts because for sure we do not need to be playing with 10 men and him getting needless bans.

I think Rooney needs to have a word with him!

Ronnie, you can be our star man today. Inter ARE afraid of you. Little snippets I have managed to read on a few 'Inter Forums' pinpoint you as the most dangerous player to them. They have urged their defenders to give you 'special' treatment.

Please keep your cool, Ronnie, don't retaliate. Punish them by sticking in one of your special free kicks!

as mr diver said.. a Titanic battle...well we all know what happened to the Titanic... he should return to a 3 match ban....

Bristol Blue quite correct.

You United Fans get this!

Ronaldo should be given a 3 match ban for Viloent Conduct and a 3 match ban for his Diving incident. No ifs and buts. If it was that bad why was Dunne not sent off? Another homer referee If Blackburn go down you can put it down to the injustice experienced by Blackburn and Howard Webb. Blackburn and Allardyce should be suing.

Edinburgh Red, re. shooting ... High level players don't pull the trigger until the goal is more or less assured (notwithstanding the fact that great saves by the keeper can still happen). Until they reach the point where they think the goal is at their mercy, they keep prodding and probing and waiting for a third party to present themselves in a better, goal scoring postion. This is the beautiful game, not the lucky game. Agree though, there is a fine line between how that looks and leaving oneself open to accusations about wanting to walk the ball into the net.

Rooney 2-0 easy money and Mourinho going ape, i can see it now!

As a city supporter i couldn't care less about Ronaldo, but what really does annoy most supporters whether blue or red or whoever your team is,one word which the referees should look up in the dictionary is CONSISTANCY.

outstation, perth, australia
Berba and carrick often hold up play instead of shooting which is a problem in my book, more goals equals more victories.
Just heard that fletch has been targetted by some scummy burglers, best wishes to his family and hope his mind is ok on tonights game, he can evision that some of the inter players are the cowardly burglers.

Ronaldo was very lucky to have gotten away with the silly kick out and has done it a fair few times without punishment but as the guys before have stated if the Ref see's it and doesn't think it was worth warrenting a booking then so be it. Your being a little petty about the dive which got the punishment it deserved a "Yellow"....a three match? lol!!

I think you best get back too your side now, as i do believe you have a BIG tie on Thursday in the "Two Bob Fair Play Cup" to talk about....Ziiiib!!

Why are all you bitters coming on here moaning? Ronaldo is talking about the Champions League, something you lot will never experience. Go and winge on your on board. A score draw tonight, beat them back at our place.

What would mr h webb say on watching a replay of the disallowed johny evans clear goal??????? nuff said bitters.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Rick, I'm really sorry for laughing; but perhaps Blackburn should have tried winning some of the 11 other games they lost! (Not to mention their 8 draws)

4-0, 5-0 tonight. Inter wont be able to live with us. Can see Berba getting 1 or 2, Ronaldo, Rooney, and 1 from midfield. We need to attack to keep the ball away from our weakened defence.

Who was United's best player against Blackburn?

Surely it has to be Howard Webb, but he doesn't seem to have a box to tick against.

You just don't learn do you?

As was mentioned by numerous people yesterday after your little rant, the incident was spotted by the ref who spoke to both Ronaldo and Dunn - end of story, no possible FA intervention, etc.

As for diving, it is a yellow card offence and that is what he got. Did Ball get even a yellow after he cheated a penalty out of the ref against Utd - er, no. Bet you didn't complain then.

As for the "homer ref" - he ruled out a perfectly legitimate goal scored by Evans but didn't give Blackburn a penalty - any cause for feelings of injustice for Rovers, again no. The same "homer ref" denied us a clear penalty (whilst booking our player who did absolutely nothing) and ruled out 2 more goals the last time he came to OT.

Get a life.

Rick Jenks - TMUF has described why Ronaldo won't get banned as I also have on another article yesterday. Seems like the City fans have trouble either understanding the rules or actually reading what is in front of them.

Rick the bitter, I've told you once before, go and prepare for your massive euro sherbert dib-dab game on Thursday.
