Manchester United

West Brom 0 United 5: Player ratings

Van der sar: Hardly had anything to do to complete his record breaking task 6

Neville: Only the opening minutes caused him any great concern. Two games in three days is no problem when United are in this form 6

Ferdinand: Once he settled into the scheme of things again he was back to his old self 7

Vidic: Strong as an ox at the back and powerful as a bull when he attacked ball for his goal 8

O'Shea: No problems whatsoever for the Irishman at left back 6

Ronaldo: Dancing feet mesmerised Albion in first half and clinical finishing in second 7

Carrick: Started the rout with another of his sublime passes to Berbatov 7

Giggs: Just as he destroyed Chelsea from central midfield this month he rolled back the years again 9

Park: Not at his Chelsea level but the South Korean did enough to have Albion pulling their hair out 6

Tevez: Was hard to repeat his non-stop performance against Spurs but still managed to score 7

Berbatov: Five goals in his last seven matches the Bulgarian is beginning to fire 7

Subs:

Brown: (sub Ferdinand 70) Easy return 5

Eckersley: (sub Neville 70) No problems 5

Tosic: (sub Berbatov 77) Not much to do 5

Not used: Fletcher, Scholes, Gibson, Kuszczak

West brom: Carson, Hoefkens, Robinson, Koren, Brunt, Pele, Zuiverloon (Morrison 64), Valero, Simpson (Bednar 64), Donk, Fortune (Brunt 45)

Battle of the bosses: Battle was arguably won in the medical rooms as Fergie had enough firepower to tear apart Tony Mowbray's usual adventurous plans

Referee: Rob Styles - Won't be welcomed back in West Bromwich for a long time. 5

Attendance: 26,105

Ryan Giggs! What a star! We're going to get years out of him in this central midfield role. He looks like he's played there all his life. Where's that dipstick Barry now?

Amazing game. Stiles deserved a -5, he was out of control. 11 clean sheets, and we've caught up with Chelsea's goal difference - Ronaldo back in top gear, Rio and Wes back. What more could you ask? Apart, maybe, from wanting a couple of genius Brazilian twins in place for the future... Oh right, we have that! Wow this is a good time to be red...

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet....when its sweet to sweat and sweep medals, swap records and roar like a true champ, i mean a Red Devil. In deed my head swells.
I truly admire my team. What a morale boosting record, even for me.

Only 6 for Park? Felt that he was one of the star performers on the night.

I felt both Carrick and Berba deserved a bit higher rating, as they played some brilliant passes. But no doubt Giggs was massive.

Giggs a 9? I tend to agree with you if you close both eyes to all his stray and erratic passes and the useless chasing when going back to defend. He had a great game against Chelsea I admit but all this euphoric praise would not be showered on him if he was not a past legend and so old.

I thought that Rob Styles had an apalling game. As well as alienating the WBA fans bigtime, he made sure that the game became the Rob Styles Show and ruined it as a spectacle or a contest. After he sent off Robinson - I was a lot closer to the incident than he was and it looked a yellow card at best, though I've not seen a replay - every decision he made (and he made some shockers) was contested by the home crowd, who just got into the the usual pro-United/anti-small club conspiracy theory stuff with a vengeance. Any foul on a United player (especially Ronaldo) was interpreted as a dive from that point onwards. The point is, we'd have won anyway, even if they'd had eleven players on the pitch, so all Styles did was to help create a rancorous atmosphere and a sense that we were somehow cheating our way to a victory that we actually richly deserved. The counter-attacking in the second half showed signs of last year's cutting edge, though Ronny was visibly throwing his toys out of the pram whenever things didn't quite work out. Don't think he's enjoying his football much at the minute, though the goals might help. Thought Berbatov had a great game - he's really coming into his own now. Anyway, I think a 5 for Rob Styles is generous in the extreme. Even though we won comfortably, that was as poor a refereeing display as I can ever remember seeing and the fact that we won shouldn't blind us to how wretched he was. I'd give him a 1 for managing to find his way to the pitch from the dressing room!

Great scoreline, bit of a spluttering performance.

VDS: 6 - Record-breaker! Occasional shouting/catching.

GN: 7 - Improving.

JOP: 6 - Bystander. Ok.

RF: 7 - Cruised.

NV: 6 - Didn't actually score.

JSP: 6 - Great fifth touch.

MC: 7 - Erratic early doors; got better.

RG: 8 - Skimmed over the turf.

DB: 7 - Won't pass to Tevez.

CT: 7 - Won't pass to Berba.

Wes: 10 - Assassin.

RE: 6 - Came on.

Bambi: 6 - Small.

Rob Styles: 11 - MotM. I genuinely feel sorry for Styles. In the last couple of years, he's completely lost it. I mean, he doesn't book Vidic for assault and books Parkie for a brilliant piece of defending. As for the red card, he sent a player off for a tackle he couldn't actually see. Bizarre.

i wasen't able to watch the full game. however i seen football first. From what i see giggs looked amazing a bit like his old self. Red Lou, Malta

Sorry I have to disagree, Giggs played well. Yes, he gave the ball away a few times but his running from midfield opened up the game for us.

Not sure which match Red Lou was watching but Giggs had a great game in this one. The star pairing for me though was Carrick and Berbatov. What an understanding these two have and it can only get better. The whole team operated as a unit and Ronaldo's two goals should take him up to his best level. Looking good.

On the negative comments about Giggs.

Look at the run he made for Ronaldo's first goal, and his driving run almost help create a goal for Tevez in the first half before the little fella did find the net.

He has been in fantastic form, and deserves all the plaudids he's getting this season - whether or not he's a past legend.

Once more Vidic, Tevez and Giggs were fanastic, and finally Berbatov is showing the sort of form we all know he's capable of - so much for the 'Berbaflop' moniker he's been given by the bitters at wastelands, where may I add, the dream is dying quicker than i expected and i'm loving it!

He and Tevez look like they are building a promising partnership - and no disrespect, but I hope Sir Alex finds it difficult to find a place for Rooney in the side, if these two continue to play well up front.

I hate the fact that players can walk straight back into the team after injury, for me it takes an edge off the competition to get places.

As much as I have criticised Ronaldo on these threads in the past, I hope his two goals lifts his confidence even higher (if it's possible).

He's looked out of sorts recently, and again missed chances he'd have buried last season.

For one who actually went to the game, Rob Stiles had a good game apart from the Penalty he denied Neville.
We need more refs like him.

I thought the whole team played great once we got out of our lethargic start to boyh halfs, only negatives which where slight was vds not looking to convincing from crosses and o'shea getting skinned about twenty times, good performances all round, also carrick ran and berbatov was involved loads, long may that continue.

Giggs is a better CM than Scholes now. Carrick has been tremendous lately and our best CM now is undoubtedly Giggs/Carrick.
Berbatov; pure genious. His link up play, passing, touches; the man is class and now Berbativ and the team is starting to melt together as a unit(ed) and it looks great! Btw; no matter how well O'Shea play, he seems to get a 6 in the ratings and stick in the comments. Can't quite understand what separated Neville and O'Shea's performance last night, f.e.?

Ref Styles wasn't as bad as some people claim. The red card was a 50/50 decision and the tackle was plain stupidity. Watch the other incidents that made the WBAs insane, and you'll find that Berbatov was onside in the 1-2 with Carrick before he smashed in the first. Nobody in a red shirt touched Carson when he dropped the ball at Tevez feet so he could tap in the second. Both Ronaldo and Berbatov was onside when Ronaldo scored his first and Uniteds fourth.

Red Lou, Malta...I have to at least give you credit for being consistent and persistent in your Giggs bashing....even though the quality of his performance could not have been more blatantly obvious. Class is permanent and we are seeing it in different games from the "old guard". Fergie is dong a masterful job in not overworking them. Let's hope injuries doesn't rob him of that luxory.

Giggsy had a few stray passes but generally he played like a champ !!
well done United
And Ronaldo , lets hope its a confidence boost come on boy u know how to do it !

Giggs was very good last night but not great as against Chelsea. I havent been his fan lately which is why i still think he shouldnt be offered a new contract if he doesn't want to keep his performance up. It looks to me like he s playing for a new contract.
MC and DB was very good.
My main worry is the bad start of games we have been having lately especially the defence.

Robbo & bobbyd, well done lads. Average marks of 6 to 7 for a 5-0 win away from home - good to see SOMEONE is making an effort to ensure we don't get complacent on standards. Keep it up.

this is the answer to all united fans and to all english fans who said about berbatov and united who spend a lot of money for the bulgarian.the best is yet to come for the berba

MUFC1878 - On the contrary, you play your best players as often as you can. Continuity is what breeds success. We all know that when Rooney for example comes back from injury he typically has a brilliant four weeks or so , before experiencing a little burn out of sorts. Soon as he's fit, he'll be first name on the teamsheet, no doubt. It is that ruthless singlemindedness on and off the pitch taht has made SAF so successful.

Possibly because it was a good, not great, performance Alias? One made all the easier thanks to a soft red card.

With so many false dawns this season excuse me if I don't get too excited over last nights result, I really hope that this is the one that gets us going again though!
