The Serbian winger, who was unveiled last week following his move from Partizan Belgrade, was expected to be eased into the United first team.
The 21-year-old was not supposed to be introduced for another six weeks with Ferguson wanting to ensure he was prepared for the physical demands of the Premier League.
But the United manager has had a rethink and Tosic now looks likely to play some part in the match, which Derby lead 1-0 after the first leg.
Ferguson has so far stuck to his policy of blooding youngsters in the Carling Cup, which is why he sees Derby as an ideal opportunity to give him his first taste of English football.
And despite United planning to bide their time with the left winger, it could see him play a greater role in the title run-in - particularly given Nani's struggles to rediscover the form of his first season at Old Trafford.

Expectations?
To take a few cracking freekicks. Would expect to see him if United get 2 up and have around 20 minutes of the game left. Wonder how strong the team will be? Hoping to see Welbeck, Tevez, Ando, Carrick, Nani, Park, Oshea, Raf, Vida, Evans, Foster line up.

I don't *really* understand why he'd be gently brought in so gradually over such a long time. It's not like he's a 16 year old novice. He's a 21 year old full international for god's sake! Give him a go NOW!

Don't even think Nani was up to it last year. The guy just doesn't have the ability to make the right decision. He just doesn't know when to pass, shoot or carry on running in circles.
I'll be happy to see the back of him - but maybe he's only here as a buddy for Ronaldo.
It's the perfect game for Tosic.I'd play him from the kick off.If Derby score UNITED will need three.
On attitude Tosic has nothing to beat competing with Nani.I don't know what his problem is but Nani doesn't look happy and is playing well below his capabilities.
My expectations of Tosic are just to see that he has potential and who knows he might grab a goal.It'll bring on his match fitness.The fact SAF is thinking of playing him so quickly is a good sign.
Hope he does play a part, looking forward to seeing him.
Nani hasnt performed too well this season but the potential is clear. He is fast can dribble is two footed can score outside the box and can put in a decent cross its just he hasn't been consistent enough even during matches which can be explained by a lack of match fitness.
For me it is too early to write him off, I'm sure with every game the frustrations from the crowd makes him want to try to perform more to impress and get in to the team which has led to the incorrect decision being made.
He is young still and please lets not all think that everyone develops as quickly as Ronaldo, Rooney or Messi. He has scored 4 goals this season which is a good return considering the games played.
Tosic coming in will only improve Nani IMO as increased competition aswell as a greater opportunity to play on the right which should allow him to expresss the ability we all know he has.
Inexperience is the main problem with Nani and while he is our player it is in all of our interest to get behind a player who could have a big future with us.
As for Tosic, he hasnt played competitevely for a while and is also coming into a new country wih a complete change in style of football.
I wish him all the best but whether he starts off superbly or slowly, lets not expect too much from him too soon and hope he can prove to be another great addition to the squad for years to come.
TMUF makes the sensible comment. We need to stop berating our players and support them because without players like Giggs, Neville, Park, Fletcher, Nani, Anderson, Ronaldo, VDS, TK, good God, do I need to go on?
The line up will have to be a reasonably strong one as this puts us in the final. I don't see them scoring and I don't see us scoring less than three. i'm sure Nani and Park will start wide and perhaps Scholes and Anderson in the middle. Up front should be Tevez and Wellbeck.Raphael, Vidic, Evans and JOS to round it out. Leave Gibson on the bench for this one.
Everyone is always slagging off Nani and saying how crap he is and that we should get rid...!!!!
Of course, he is not going to be superb, not when he plays 1 game in every 3/4 and he knows he is not going to keep his place. The boy is lacking in confidence, so lets give him the bloody love and support he needs. He has all the attributes to become a world class footballer...patience will reward both us and Nani...

Completely agree with the comments made about getting off Nani's back the lads got all the attributes required of a top winger, but in my eyes is lacking in confidence and is playing on the left wing when he should be getting a chance on the right hand side, and not 45 mins and then a break of 2-3 games.
As for Tosic, it'll be nice to see how he fares against the Rams, it'll take some adapting for him to settle into his new environment, plus it looks as though he could do with eating a few shredded wheat for breakfast. Will be nice to have some balance on the left for a change to.
I have no expectations of Tosic as I have seen only glimpses of him. I think that's the best way to be with a new, relatively unknown player. He should be given a blank canvas and a decent amount of time to show us what he can do.
As for Nani, well of course he's frustrating but he's obviously a talented player. I would be surprised and disappointed if he was on his way out and I do believe he will come good.
I agree nani is a top top player who needs to be let out of the stable and bolt every match and play in every match play him in the right hand side with rapheal backing him up with those flowing runs that i shout shoot rapheal shoot and his shots do scare the life out of defenders and the keepers,so play nani more,anderson needs more playing time too.we do need left bck cover and maybe a central defender i would like to see titus bramble paying as bac up forutd i rate him.
I really hope Tosic starts as from kick-off and leave the the leaden-footed Nani on the bench!This will serve the latter a lesson for his inconsistency.Hence, he will realise that his place is the squad is not granted!

Solskjaer20Legend: Agreed 100% with your point about Nani being on the right wing. I thought that Tosic was signed as a replacement for Giggs, with Nani a backup for Ronaldo.
Nani just needs more games to develop an understanding with the other players. I don't agree that he lacks the pace and the dribbling skills to beat a man. Unlike Ronaldo, his opportunities are more restricted. But I'm sure he'll develop into a quality player under Ferguson.
TMUF/Neal - whilst i agree totally and i attend every match with those feelings towards Nini, i can't help booting the seat in front of me after about 5 mins.... and then for the rest of the game!! lol. The lad is failing in the basics of controlling the ball & now lately, passing it no more than 10 yards to a team-mate. Even SaF who has been known to be very supportive of his struggling players in the past appears to have run out of patience with him.
how long do we persevere? We berate the likes of Pennant, Malouda etc at other clubs. I just want the best for Utd and whilst i see the potential in Anderson (whose form has also dropped this yr) i just don't see Nini 'cutting' it long term. IMO.
Unfortunately playing for UTD requires resultsso when you have the chance you must seize. Nani has the talent but has to prove it in whatever time he has. Yes he is young and tries to do too much at times.
