6 Neville: Nothing from the Saints to test a man of his experience
6 Evans: One first half scare when he was booked for hauling down McGoldrickafter he was turned but otherwise comfortable
7 Vidic: Not even the lunge from Paterson could upset the Serb's dominance
7 O'Shea: Easy afternoon defensively and proved a danger a few times in attack
7 Nani: Considering the opposition this might not scare new arrival Zoran Tosic but it was a better effort
6 Carrick: Should have scored a goal but plenty of chances to practise his passing
6 Anderson: The Brazilian probably did more on his mini break back home
6 Giggs: The veteran didn't really pull up any trees despite United's dominance
7 Welbeck: Poached his goal well and had one turn and shot brilliantly saved
8 Berbatov: The Bulgarian's passing was imperious and Reds should have added more to his assist column
Subs: Gibson (Giggs 55) Made up for a couple of missed chances 6, Possebon (sub Carrick 55) Quiet time 5 Rooney (sub Welbeck 62) Very lively cameo 6
Not used: Park, Rafael, Fletcher, Kuszczak
Southampton: Davis, James, Perry, Lancashire, Skacel, Surman, Gillett (Schneiderlin 55), Smith (Holmes 69), Gobern (McClaggon 55), McGoldrick, Paterson
Bookings: Southampton: Skacel (37) James (73) United: Evans (34) O'Shea (41)
Sent off: Paterson (36). Straight red card for Southampton
Battle of the Bosses: Fergie got the freshness bang on and it was enough to comfortably win the day over Jan Poortvliet's raw outfit

Berbatov 9 would have been a 10 if he'd scored, superb display. Oshea & Gaz Nev both 6 at most!
MotM Berbatov. Didn't get separated from the ball and his passes were sublime..
berba was MoM superb passing and creative touch, he missing some killer instinct in front of the goal, but he is the most creative player today.
what a attitude from Rooney, when he came in..! he is so important for manu, nani need some confidence and he is starting to show his skils.
Impressed over welbeck he is definility going to be a manu player, not sure about possebon and gibson they do not give any difference to the team they look like squad players
Possebon needs to up his game by taking a few chances with his passing in the manner of Carrick and Scholes. However, I remember reading Les Kershaw saying that they view his long-term role as a defensive midfield in the mould of Claude Makelele. This makes sense except that in 9.5 out of 10 games, we control the ball and do not need a defsive midfield player who plays the ball short only after winning it. So, for him to improve, I believe that he will attempt more penetrative passes and shots on goal. There are more than enough players at the club to learn from in Anderson, Carrick and Scholes.
I thought Berbatov was at his best. I'd like to see more of this against tougher opposition. Nani was also very good today.
O'Shea did not deserve the same score as Nani. Nani was better.
Rooney did not deserve the same score as Gibson. He lit up the game when he came on.
Otherwise the scores are about right.
Would have expected more scoring against a weak and impaired team.
In spite of what the Satana announceres were saying and what the player was saying it was a hand (arm) ball.
The terrific spin on the ball beat Evans and he had to take the yellow card as a result.
Onward and upward!

The more i see Nani, the more i am starting to think that he has no brain. He has all the qualities to be a top player but it seems like he hates passing the ball. The only times he passed the ball, he does it either in a casual way or take the wrong option.I hope Tosic can start good straight away as Nani makes me sick especially due to the fact i always want to see a MOM performance from him as he did against Arsenal(FA cup last season).
Gibson is not United quality and Possebon must realise he will go the same way if he does not wake up.
Wellbeck has got everything to make it if he wants to.
I think people need to get off Nani's back a little, what did he do so wrong today?? He wasn't wasteful in possesion skinned his marker almost the whole game, the lad needs to start more games if he's to improve on his undoubted ability.
The Players who where poor today in my eyes were Giggsy, and Oaf Shea how he gets paid to play for United is beyong my comprehension, as for Giggs it's painful to watch the decline of such a great player he should be put out to graze and used in a coaching role.
Berbatov was on top of his game, barr not scoring which in my eyes he was brought to do. All our strikers like to drop deep, apart from welbeck, who is more out and out striker. Hopefully things will begin to Gel and fall into place but then again we're not in a bad position having not hit top form. So pretenders BEWARE!!
Bring on the second half of the Year!!
One of the very few occasions that united actually impressed with great attacking intent lately. We lost a couple more chances but i am as pleased.
Berb!!! got me gratefully delightful 9.
Anderson-8
United 10
I agree with the ratings. It was a good game, Southampton had only one really good chance (which I hope Chelsea won't have on 11th). No doubt MOM is Berbatov, who made one of the best (if not the best) game up to now... I'm huge fan of his but even I wondered why he played so good today. And maybe got the answer.
It's not the class of the opponents. But maybe it was the rest of the team. And more exactly, these who were rested for one reason or another - Ronaldo, Tevez and (for half of the game) Rooney. So Berbatov remained the only one of our "Fantastic Four" on the pitch and he felt he should take the responsibility to lead the team. And managed to do it, proving once again his class.
While in Tottenham there were several games in which he did the almost the same, saving the team from defeats and even leading it to victory. I hope that after today's game the rest of the team will rely on him even more than up to now - then he'll show why SAF spent almost 31 mil for him! And I'll be especially glad if he shows his full strenght against Chelsea and Inter!
I swear I just watched Cantona play today ?? !!
thought O Pie was immeasurably better than he has been recently. Berba was class with the flicks and vision today.
Robbo keep it up cos honesty is needed at all times dude!
Sublime touches from Berba - again. In that department he is world class. Goals will surely follow.
Sadly, Possebon does not have what it takes to break into the first team; Gibson might suffice as a squad player if he keeps developing. If we can mould him into another loyal "dog" like JOS, let's keep him!
Wellbeck is still very young and needs more time.
Berbatov needs to be more selfish. Times he could have scored but choose the pass. A good display from a good mixture of youth and experience. Welbeck is going to be one hell of a player.
Lets keep it honest, we were playing a team second from bottom of the championship, pretty much bankrupt, playing with 10 men, and all about 18.
Given that I thought the "Champions of the World" made hard work of the whole thing and wouldn't give anyone above a 6. A bit of a yawn really. One goal could have been given offside, the penalty was dubious/harsh and the thrid one was good from Rooney.
A lot of people had a chance to demonstrate how good they were and failed Anderson, Nani, Welbeck, Possebon, Evans all not really good enough I'm afraid.
Berbatov was sublime and he should get a 9 at least.Welbeck deserves his 7 but a 6 for Giggs is ridiculous but then somehow he always starts with an advantage of 2 points over anyone else.As for Nani the rating of 7 is not unreasonable. We should not write Nani off too early. One good performance from and there will be a chorus of praises for him.
Thought Berb was great but he becomes disinterested far too easily.
Yesterday was an opportunity for our players to pulverize the opposition, Ando to get off the mark and Berb to add significantly to his goal tally.
We should have won 6/7/8 - 0 against a completely dejected side, Rooney has the ruthless streak but too few of the rest have it. You gotta be mean and want to destroy the opposition in my opinion.
Maybe I'm just being over-critical :)
Some of the scores on here relating to The Berb are ridiculous. He played a lot better but never looked like scoring. He was playing against kids for Christ sake.
I'd say a 7. Rooney achieved more with one run and 30 commited minutes, so let's get real.
Once again the RED part of MANCHESTER will show the BLUE side of Manchester how to win TROPHIES again this year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
JOHN(Manchester)
Good points - Welbeck getting some game time, Berbatov finding room, Rooney's desire, Carrick rested and ready. Not so good points - Evans looks shaky, Gibson looks ponderous, Possebon has lost his nerve, Berbatov and Rooney are happier trying to create goals rather than score goals.
It was like an adult playing in a childrens game. The adult knows he could score all the time but prefers to lay it off for the kids.Berbatov can save his ruthlessness for the big games. In a tie like this play the young ones in and see what they're made of.If you don't you don't learn anything.JOS looked like Pele at this level.
Agree with a lot of tooth and claws points, playing against lowly opposition who are then reduced to 10 men should have been a great chance for goals and players expressing themselves, berbatov great passes but with him playing we have turned into arsenal trying to pass the ball in, I counted about 5 times he hasd the chance to shoot and didnt, evans looked shaky and possebon looked slow when he came on, glad to see rooney trying to get effort out of the players when he came on.
