Manchester United

United v Boro: Player ratings

Van der Sar: Captain in the absence of Ferdinand, Giggs and Neville, he would have been glad of the extra layer provided by his armband on a freezing night, in which he was a virtual spectator 6

Rafael: The exciting Brazilian was allowed to concentrate on attacking and provided a number of penetrating crosses, but should have at least hit the target with one first half effort 7

Vidic: Did well to snuff out an early run by Aliadiere to get Evans out of jail and came up with a number of timely interventions on the odd occasion Boro ventured forward 7

Evans: The young Northern Ireland international is enjoying an extended run in the first team, but this wasn't the occasion to learn much about the promising youngster 7

O'Shea: Continuing to cover for Evra but on an evening when Boro barely looked to get forward, he hardly had to be at his best 6

Ronaldo: Has come in for some criticism from Boro boss Southgate in the past for going down easy, but he did well to stand up to the treatment he received from the visitors. Still should have scored in the first half 7

Carrick: Passing as incisive as ever, and it was his cross that created the goal. Might have done better with a chance late in the first half 8

Fletcher: A disciplined performance, but still broke from deep on a number of occasions when his runs deserved better passes than they received 7

Park: A willing and creative outlet on either wing and tore through Boro on a number of occasions, but only he will know how he failed to add to United's winning margin 8

Rooney: Back together with Berbatov and the pair linked well. Plenty of vision, but the quality of his final ball let him down too often 7

Berbatov: Debatable whether he would have started had Tevez not returned to Argentina following his winning goal against Stoke on Boxing Day, but scored an absolutely vital goal 8

Substitutes

Neville (Rafael 63) terrific cross to Park should have made it a more comfortable finish for United 6

Scholes (Fletcher 63) brought creation and assuredness to midfield 6

Giggs (Ronaldo 85) no time for mark

Not used: Kuszczak, Gibson, Welbeck, Possebon

Referee: Martin Atkinson – didn't rush to hand out cards early on but might have punished Pogatetz for challenge on Ronaldo on the stroke of half time. 3/5

No nonsense from O'Pie, played well, 7!

Pogatetz should get 15 months hard labour. How he got away with that....

If one of our guys had done anything similar it would be in the papers until next year....

This ratings are a joke! Park gets an 8 inspite of missing like a hundred chances??? If middlesborough would ve equalized, Park was to take all the blame. And what did Berbatov do in the whole game except for the goal he scored.
Scholes gets a 6?? In the full duration he was on the pitch, he lost the ball only once!!
Vidic should get an 8 for his incredible defending. Evans did a decent job too.

Agreed with previous comments; some of the ratings are laughable to say the least.

Rafael = 7?

Give me a break!

The guy's a liability and the only surprise was that Fergie didn't yank him off earlier.

Each time he lost the ball he was left stranded upfield and left Vidic to defend against two players - who seemed to always be waiting for just that very enventuality - and which Boro quickly turned into three players, attacking down that flank.

I think playing Rafael is a risk not worth taking anymore and although we needed more attacking players for tonight's match -as opposed to more defenders v Stoke - he should now be brought on only if we're still chasing a game; or preferably not at all.

Hopefully Wes Brown will be back soon.

His (Brown's) height also offers us much more at the back as well as up front.

Interesting to see also that Boro targetted Rafael all night with their goalkeeper and defensive clearances in the air towards that area of the pitch.

Thankfully Gary came on and steadied the ship, and also managed to win some free-kicks with his experience, when in tight situations and when they were pressing for the equaliser.

Raf - His inexperience showed a bit tonight - all over the park - 6
Vidic - Safe as houses - 7
Evans - Steady - 7
O'Shea - needs to add to the team going forward -6 Evra is a real miss in an attacking sense.
Ron - good to see him involved again but for whatever reason it just aint happening - 6 ( a 10 for his pouting, which is getting on my nerves. Should have been a thespian!)
Michelle - good overall - 7
Fletch - Very quiet tonight -5.
Park Got better as the game went on. Really had a go at their back four. Much more like it. - 8
Rooney- Goodish game overall -7
Berb - Sorry but poor overall, the goal saved his bacon. - 5. He's been so disappointing so far.
Scholes - typically in charge. A couple of tremendous 40/50 yarders. Best passer in the country - 7
Nev - No frills! - 6

The ratings flatter Rafael and Fletch......I'd even give Ronnie a 6...he was just inept (again) tonight. Park gets a 8 for effort but that's it....he can't hit a barn door. Berbatov still remains an enigma and, although he has amazing touch,I think we've seen as good as we're going to get with this guy. He doesn't work anywhere near the level expected and showed too many petulant gestures tonight when things didn't go well for him.

Without knowing the score or having watched the game prior to reading these ratings I would have thought that there was no room for improvement and that we'd thrashed them. What a joke! Fergie says we are not scoring and that its going to cost us but continues to play a flat midfield with Park and allows Berbatov to wander around the centre circle as if he's waiting for a bus. How many times did we have to check back inside cos there's no-one in the box for an early cross? No. 9's need to be around the penalty spot not the centre spot. Come on Fergie do us a favour and get us back to the free flowing, high tempo football that won us the league last year! and if that means dropping your $30m star man the do it!

VDS: 6 - Waved trophy.

RdS: 5 - I could see/imagine Vida thinking... "Right. Tonight, any defensive help we get from Rafa is a bonus. Basically, we're playing with a back three."

JOP: 10 - Fast, buccaneering, conspicuously left-footed. Star man.

Vida: 7 - Beast. Blossoming as a leader, too. After a few dodgy games, he's been awesome this season.

JE: 6 - As 20-year-old CBs go, this kid is the tops. Bit nervous/safety-first tonight, but he's learning.

CR: 5 - Working out his notice. Hero to zero. Suffering from acute lack of crowd love syndrome.

MC: 5 - Sideways shovelling. Put team-mates under pressure.

DF: 4 - Back to basics. The heady autumnal days of 'Super Fletch' are long gone. Slipping behind Gibson in the midfield pecking order.

JSP: 6 - Honestly, add a Scholes/Rooney brain to his work-rate/movement and he'd be amazing. But he's not Scholes: he can't shoot, he can't pass, he can't do anything.

DB: 6 - Berb in 18-yard box appearance shocker!

WR: 5 - Worked hard. Touch was off.

GN-is-a-Red: 6 - Steady. Bizarre crawling on the ground.

PS: 7 - Hail! Just immeasurably superior to everyone. Maestro.

RG: 5 - Touched it about twice.

Boro didn't score and didn't look like they were going to score, but how Van der Sar and O"Sheasy got a point less than the rest is confusing - both were as good as the others in their respective positions. If the FBs are going to be expected to attack as part of their game that is fine, but Rafael didn't do anything more than O'Shea.

Van der Sar: 6 add +1 = 7
Rafael: 7
Vidic: 7
Evans: 7
O'Shea: 6 add +1 =7

The attack was lethargic and regardless of the goal no one deserved an 8. The midfield was very average and 5 is average right? Are points being given out for keeping ball possession, but not creating quality scoring chances? Without goals ball possession does not WIN games.

Ronaldo: 7 take 2 = 5 (more negative play than positive and missed several chances he should have taken)
Carrick: 8 take 2 = 6 (create something in the final 3rd, make an attacking run, take a shot on your first touch)
Fletcher: 7 take 2 = 5 (I'm beginning to think Fletcher's spirit is killing the team, but only time will tell)
Park: 8 take 2 = 6 (how can one continually miss a shot less than 2 meters from goal!?! needless to say he can't hit the goal from further out either)

The strikers were busy but hampered by the midfield.

Rooney: 7
Berbatov: 8 take 1 = 7 (score a 2nd goal and then an 8 is fare)

Neville 6 add +1 = 7 (did his job well)
Scholes 6
Giggs NS

I don't pay much heed to ratings all that often. I don't understand though how a loss would have been Parks fault. I must be one of the few who see his value. Ronaldo missed a sitter fed through from Rooney too. You win as a team, you lose as a team. 3 points secured. Job done.

Park is rubbish!

I dread to think what score Bobby D will give Park but let me just say this and accept that I may well be shot down in a hail of scribes bullets.
I thought that in the last half an hour Park was brilliant!! He was everywhere, taking on their back four, creating pressure and taking up some great positions. His stamina is amazing. Yes, I know he missed a sitter and other very scorable chances but the whole team are guilty of that aren't they?
His display was pivotal in our dominance of the last third of the game. Hell, I thought he did really well and how this little guy deserves a goal and at least some credit.
What people say about his lack of quality is all most certainly right but he did his bit last night.

We need to get more pace into our play. Sir Alex need to sort out how the strikers shall play, because now both Berbatov and Rooney drops to deep and one reason for bringing in Berbatov was that we lacked a striker staying on top. Maybe Berbatov should play behind the 'upper striker', cause he's brillaint picking the passes, holding the ball etc. - and he's able to shot from distance as well. But to those criticising Berbatov for not being inside the box; get a grip! He had severeal chances inside and nearly chipped in one in the forst half, and spread passes inside as well that other players should have handled better. Berbatov dropping deep is due to our lack of a killer midfield (much of the same reason Rooney dropped deep often last season) - when Scholes came on Berbatov stayed up front.

Which park were the men watching he was rubbish.Tevez away on family matter yeah right!!

To me young Rafael was the biggest dissapointment of the night. Did anyone notice the hairdryer he was given by Vidic (even Sir Alex must have been impressed)? He lost possession far to often, he exposed teammates almost every time he had the ball, the tackles was ill-timed, his passing as bad as Park's finishing and his movement was a complete mess. Yes, he's a big talent but there's a long way to go and I can't wait for us having Wes back. It was a big relief when Sir Alex ripped Rafale off, sending Neville in to make things steady.

Park put in a full shift but failed to test the keeper 6.Rafael is a marvellous talent. This was not his best game and GNev steadied UNITED when he came on.Fletcher seemed to lose control of the midfield in the second half and Scholes without getting involved in trench warfare regained control.Fletch doesn't have the stength of OH.Evans could improve his passing a little bit.He gave it away cheaply when not under pressure but overall he did well.Ronaldo allowed himself to be put off his game by Pogatetz.Berbatov =6pts instead of 2 from the last 2 matches. It isn't how much he does but the effectiveness of what he does.Pure class.
I don't consider myself to be strongly against any team but having seen the tackling from Boro players on a number of occasions I think it would be best for football if they got relegated.Pogatetz tried to injure Ronaldo last night and sadly it was not a one off.

Seems one mans 'star' is another mans 'poor player' - the only good thing from this performance (other than we got the 3 points) was that we made a lot more chances than any game recently - really we could have had 10 goals whereas against Stoke we were rarely even close. Hopefully that is a sign that things are improving although this was supposedly our best team available so thats a bit worrying.

I just don't get this Park support though? MoM - if that's true then all the other players should be ashamed! He has no quality and should not be wearing a United shirt. There were times when Rooney saw him open and deliberately did NOT pass him the ball!

Ronaldo was blatantly fouled

i do not see the problem here, what the hell would you bee like if we were lossing. Half some faith. or have most of you just been supporting Utd for a week or 2!!! SAF with deliver.

as long as we have solid centre backs a great keeper and midfield general ( carrik)and they are consistent the rest will eventually fall into place. yes we are slow out of the blocks this season but when we spark... nice to hear gerrard got himself draw into a rumble that shoul herald asplutter for LFC.

ive been a big supporter of Park since day one. I know how Bobby will rate his performance this match-

He'll probably give him a 5 since he missed a sitter.

But no no sir, it was an 8 well deserved. I don't get why theres so many of you trying to to rate him down just b/c of his finish.

cmon, he's no striker- he put in a decent effort.
And the bloody mate was everywhere- left and right terrorizing the CB's and creating so many chances. If anything, I feel bad that so many of his flawless assist attempts had gone bad due to surprisingly sluggish finish attempts by Ronaldo (boy he was horrible today, and increasingly so these days)

My MoM was Carrick and Park. Nice ball distribution Carrick- always passing to the right man at the right time.

gerry just watched the rerun of the game. confirmed what i saw live last night park worked his b***s off as always. sadly though just no end product AS ALWAYS.

even more worrying is that the fletcher of old reemerged last night four touches when one will do misplaced passes and dithering on a grand scale.

best player on the pitch by a country mile vidic and then scholes.

Report This Reply

Marks are all a bit too high, carrick as usual showed the potential he has but not too often, someone should show him a dvd of scholes in his prime, it frustrates the life out of me when we are trying to win a game and on receiving the ball he never moves forward with it to create openings or space, he always either passes it back,or long ball forward never moving he's like a subuteo player, fletcher looks like he has peaked in the first bit of the season as he have reverted back to normal in the last few games, ronaldo doesn't look intrested and fergie should maybe give him time off from the cup games, o'shea has been played so often out of position I think he's even forgotten that lb is his natural position and he once was a great attacking lb for a season, rafael on the other side did no better mind, park as usual got himself in so many good positions but no end product, and berbatov if he didn't score I wouldn't have even known he was playing, roll on 2009 as this campaign so far has been terrible, I'm amazed we are still in with a chance of everything still.

Report This Reply

Surprised you would highlight missed passes by Fletch bobbyd, when he was in fact very tidy in possession, virtually every pass found a red shirt. I thought he had been asked to make sacrifices in his own natural game however, allowing Carrick to get forward.

Similarly, I thought Park had a good game, that miss aside. A run in the team has certainly given him confidence.

I suspect that, like a lot of fans, you unconciously look for and remember individual errors by players you just don't rate.

Report This Reply

I cant say I am a huge fan of Park but he is a valuable contributor and last night barring the misses was our best player. It does susprise me that squad players like Park are so readily criticized when they miss the net or a pass, yet Rooney who is a front line striker
