Manchester United

Stuart Mathieson's Japan diary

SIR Alex Ferguson and Darren Fletcher took an official car to the press conference the other day - well it was all of one minute's walk from their hotel!

The reason for the lift was not because 67-year-old Fergie was too tired for such a stroll - or that his midfielder is a pampered Premier League prima donna.

The reason for the lift was that despite United's Yokohama HQ being right next door to the Conference Centre where the media were waiting, there were so many Japanese fans waiting outside, security would not allow them to stroll to the venue.

United's press officer Di Law and FIFA's officials took 60 seconds to walk to the conference.

Fergie and Fletcher, on the other hand, took five minutes on four wheels!

FOR those who think United's bid to become World Champions has not stirred Reds fans' imaginations, they should listen to `United We Stand' fanzine editor Andy Mitten.

Few know the mindset of the hardcore Old Trafford support better than Andy and he told me in Japan: "I know a lot of fans who came out here in 1999 to watch United beat Palmeiras and become World Champions.

"They still see that as the highlight of their years supporting United. They even placed it above the Nou Camp that year.

"To say you were there when Manchester United became Champions of the World is something very special."

ABOUT 1000 Reds fans have made the trip to Japan and in light of the credit crunch, Ferguson is grateful for the support.

"It is something that always amazes me about our club and the fans," he says. "As everyone knows it is not the best financial position for some families back home and particularly at Christmas - but they make a sacrifice.

"I have great admiration for them to come so far to watch their football team. It tells you how they regard us and also tells you something about our football club too."

THE top-hatted and tailed concierges outside United's hotel in Yokohama are now sporting a new piece of attire.

With their smart black outfits, ties and grey trousers they now have United red and white scarves tied around their necks too.
