Reds build on Brazil links

IMPRESSED Rafael
UNITED'S strong Brazilian blend will get another airing tonight against Blackburn with Anderson, Rafael and Rodrigo Possebon set for Carling Cup quarter-final duty.

And the Reds link with the South American country has been strengthened after joining forces with Brazilian youth club Desportivo Brasil.

The alliance with the club close to Sao Paulo will use the blueprint set down by the successful tie-up United have enjoyed with Royal Antwerp.

The Belgian club have had an association with Old Trafford for 10 years and United's have sent a stream of Academy players over to learn their trade.

The new project with Desportivo has been the brainchild of Academy chief Brian McClair, former Academy boss Les Kershaw and the Reds South American recruitment officer John Calvert Toulmin.

Toulmin has already unearthed Possebon and the Da Silva twins for United.

The Reds will send coaches out to Brazil to help Desportivo progress their youth system and should then have first choice on the pick of the South Americans coming through their ranks.

The Brazilian outfit are at present completing a new training complex that is set to be one of the top facilities exclusively for junior football in the world.

Their head consultant is Brazil's World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

McClair said: "It is exciting to be involved with such an innovative partnership that allows each club to glean knowledge from each other and so develop the future of football."

United chief executive David Gill added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our coaches and Academy players.

"They will gain invaluable knowledge and experience from Desportivo. Brazilian football has always been consistent and we already have a strong Brazilian contingent at the club. This will forge an even stronger relationship."

While the Royal Antwerp has proved a good on and off the field educational for United's youngsters loaned to the club, until the Desportivo link it was the only project that had survived after a glut of alliance attempts in the early 2000s.

United had tie-ups around the globe with Brommapojkarna in Sweden, Oslo Ost in Norway, Parramatta Eagles in Australia, FC Fortune in South Africa and Nantes in France to name a few.

However, none of the links proved a success and now all have been ditched.

The boys from Brazil are very promising (as if you didn't know.) When Rafael first came into the team I wasn't carried away with SAF's euphoria about him,but he's played 10 games now and having watched him a bit he looks good.I think SAF is right not to play him every game just yet. When he plays at the moment he's fresh and consistent. The last thing he needs is a dent to his confidence through playing too much. He'll be stronger next season,as all the Brazillians will.

Have they got a left winger? Anderson and Possebon would be an interesting pairing tonight. I'm assuming Park and Nani wide with Wellbeck and Tevez up front. With Arsenal out and Spurs a maybe to exit, Fergie may think about going for the silverware a little more seriously.

Sounds good. i hope itl be like the Sporting link as in we sign there top young players who have 1st team experience. If our coaches and academy players can gain experience going and training/playing the brazilian way, even better

Yeah, they 3 are very good. Only I think that Anderson should practice his shooting more.
