The victory could have been by an even bigger margin but for Kasper Schmeichel's heroics in the City goal.
Tom Cleverley fired United into the lead, in the 13th minute, after City's defence had only half cleared Danny Drinkwater's corner from the right.
David Ball had earlier found the net for the Blues but the referee disallowed the goal for an infringement during the build-up.
Schmeichel became City's hero with two terrific saves towards the end of the first half, denying Cleverley and Brazilian youngster Rafael Da Silva.
City defender Shaleum Logan was red-carded for a reckless challenge on Richard Eckersley in the penalty area and Darron Gibson doubled United's lead from the spot.
Six minutes later Rodrigo Possebon cracked home United's third from the edge of the box.

Nice drilled finish from Rodrigo. Very un-Fletch.
Thought City had a great youth system........... they drafted in Bertie, Mee last night !!!
Always good to get one over the wrong side of Manchester.
Robbo sounds like you saw the game or at least highlights. I see Manucho's name on the list. The big question is did he show anything from what you saw???
Manucho looked a threat apparently and was denied on a couple of occassions by junior.
not surprised but disappointed at the usual bias shown by the MEN in its coverage of last night's game. I don't recall seeing such prominence given in this paper to City's numerous victories over United at all levels last season. Let's see what happens when we finish the next match with eleven players!
Caceido and Castillo must be excempt from reserve games! Why not give Vass, Benjani and Johnson a run out?
This United reserve team could probably do most premierships first teams.Brazilian magic!
read somewhere that manucho played well & was an attacking threat as a lone striker.I would like to see more of him but i doubt it he will get enough opportunities as Tevez doesnt get many!SAF should not only use Berb & roon coz an injury to either would mean playin manucho or tevez who wud be short of match fitness which i assume by seeing SAf's striker selection over the last few matches.

City HAVE a great youth system. Check out who is top of the Academy league with way more goals scored than any other team in the whole of the National academy leagues. I'll give you a clue - it isn't ManYoo.
Gerry Gow... lets see what happens when your oppos end the game with 11 players or aren't we talking prem league too ! lol.
Steve, I only saw (on Pravda/MUTV) the end of the first half and beginning of the second. Game seemed frenetic and physical with Utd producing patches of decent football.
Manucho? Apparently he played well up top on his own but nothing overly memorable in the 20 mins I saw. Set up Rodrigo's goal, though, controlling it just outside the box and laying it off.
Rafael looked pacy and feisty, Rodrigo got clobbered a couple of times and looked fully recovered from the Pogatetz assault. And took his goal really well, drilled hard and low from just outside the box.

Where's Gerry Gow?, Preston
I WONDER WHY THEY CALL YOU THE BITTERS?
TYPICAL SMALL MINDED PEOPLE WHO ARE SATISFIED WITH WINNING THE ODD DERBY EVEN THOUGH THEY NEVER WIN A TROPHY
Talking about youngsters being potentially great players did you see the performance of Arsenal's Aron Ramsey against Fenerbache? absolutely awsome and the way he took his goal tells us all Arsene Wenger has achieved a massive coup in getting him to sign for his club and not jump on the TRAFFORD hype vehicle!
Manucho worked hard and had the appropriately named Berti all over the place.
For all you bitters asking why Berti has yet to get a game in the first team, the reason was obvious last night. He makes Richard Dunne look like Bobby Moore at his prime!
This was probably City's Reserve(reserve)side, can't imagine nited beating us otherwise,it just dosn't compute!!
are you sure colin Bell's underpants aren't planted firmly on your head & you've two drumsticks petruding from your nostrils ??
Bit of humour old man, or as has been pointed out, should i just have made reference to Bertie....by name, Bertie by Nature..... forget about MEE !! lol.
reserve side or not?..... spanked or not ?..... YOU DECIDE !
LAWMAN, Do you think if I went to the trouble of going onto another teams forum & left stupid, childish messages about a little club that I really am not bothered about (honest) that would make me bitter?
(work it out you sad muppet)

Thats me in the corner, keeping my religion!
NO....YOU WERE BORN A BITTER, WERENT YOU?
SUPPOSEDLY ALL THE GIDDYS WERE BORN NOT MADE, SO YOU TELL US, BUT NOT UNITED FANS EH?
lawman.......our youth team won the FA Youth Cup last season so I am not being "bitter". My point was the undue prominence given to the result by the MEN.....perfectly reasonably put as well.
Small minded people slag off those with a differing opinion!!
Will you swamp dwellers stop getting excited it was only a reserve match 32 years were still here ctid
Hmmmm just wondering if United's reserves aren't actually our 2nd reserves?!!!
Team that THUMPED the bitters last nite was :
Foster, R Da Silva, Eckersley, Gray, C Evans, Possebon, Gibson, Drinkwater, Manucho, Hewson, Cleverley.
So are these players not Uniteds official reserves :
Kuszczak, Brown, Evans, O'Shea, Fabio, Park, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Tevez, Welbeck.
Specially when you consider that United's 1st Team is :
Van Der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Carrick, Nani, Rooney, Berbatov.
Hmmmmm scary stuff indeed!!! lol Cheer up Berties. ;)
Support the Team and Live the Dream.....
city spanked and at home, roll on the premiership derbys where utd will hammer city all over in every dept.
It seems citys first team couldnt beat Newcastles 10 men depleted side,so dont squeal about citys reserves reserve side.I was at ewen Fields ,Hyde and United deservedly beat the city side.No big deal, reserve football, but I will tell you what, of the 720 attendance there ,the majority were wearing United colours ,and I dont mean Hyde United who also play in Red.Also one of the many myths perpetuated by some blues that United have no potential first teamers in the Reserve side ,well ,Rodrigo ,Rafael ,
Cleverly ,Hewson,Gibson just to mention a few.
