United stars up for Euro honour

FAVOURITE Cristiano Ronaldo

FOUR United players have been shortlisted for the European Footballer of the Year award.

Wayne Rooney, Edwin van der Sar and Nemanja Vidic have joined favourite Cristiano Ronaldo in the final 30 for the top individual honour in European football.

England internationals Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are also in contention to claim the Ballon d'Or, although there is no place for United's Rio Ferdinand in the list compiled by France Football magazine.

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry and AC Milan's Ronaldinho - who received the accolade in 2005 - are also absent after disappointing campaigns last season.

Ronaldo is the clear favourite to win the award on December 2 following his 42-goal salvo last season which helped the Reds claim a Premier League and Champions League double. He faces competition from Barca talisman Lionel Messi and 2007 winner Kaka from AC Milan.

Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba (both Chelsea), Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas (both Arsenal) are the other Premier League stars on the list, which has been cut down from 50.

Spain are represented by seven players after winning Euro 2008 in the summer - Fernando Torres and Fabregas being joined by Marcos Senna, Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas, David Villa and Xavi.

Only three Serie A players have been nominated - Kaka, Inter Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon - with Spain's Primera Division matching the Premier League with 11 nominees.

Shortlist:
Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal), Togo
Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Argentina
Andrei Arshavin (Zenit St Petersburg), Russia
Michael Ballack (Chelsea), Germany
Karim Benzema (Lyon), France
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Italy

Fernando Torres (Liverpool), Spain
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), England
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan), Sweden
Kaka (Milan AC), Brazil
Frank Lampard (Chelsea), England
Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Argentina
Pepe (Real Madrid), Portugal
Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), France
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), England

It has to be Ronaldo for me as his 42 goal haul helped United to the biggest double that you can achieve. But he did not do it on his own and I cannot beleive that out of all those defenders Rio has not had a mention. That, forgetting the drug test is still haunting him isn't it?
Lets get one thing straight he has never used them, passed numerous tests before, always shouted about not using them, helped the kids of Peckham and got the freedom of the borough for his outstanding work yet he still gets remembered for failing to turn up for a drug test. Hey guess what, yes it still bugs me. Do I not like that is a phrase that comes to mind. Right now for a calm down. Congratulations to Wazza, Vido Edwin and Ronnie.

Maybe being crowned world player will cheer ronnie up and make him realise that he doesnt need to move anywhere to achieve greatness

Funny thing is....ive just rechecked the list and i still cant find robinhos name on there.

Strange i thought that the united reject would be high on the list but then again....only the best players in the world get nominated dont they?

1st Ronaldo.

Ronaldo? He could not even crack a smile after doubling United's lead with a crisp finish from Rooney's sublime pass.

That reaction, and his dart off the pitch at the end of the game, did little to dispel the perception that Ronaldo is still sulking over his failure to escape Old Trafford for Madrid.

The lack of adulation from the supporters is also likely to have dented his ego. Amongst the hardcore of United supporters, Ronaldo's popularity is on a par with that of Sarah Palin amongst the Alaskan Moose Society.

Ron should take the prize. Perhaps this'll cheer the miserable git up!!! Something is a little amiss with his attitude at present?

rio should have been shortlisted he is the outstanding defender in world football at the moment.

It has to be Ronaldo: 42 goals from a winger, the big double, even scored in the Champions League Final - a performance of a generation.

Another conspiracy no bitters on the list, what about Doris Vassell and Benjani ? remember both scored the two best goals in the history of the Premiership, what about Hart, SWP, and the rest of the English players at wastelands who are the backbone of the English team for years to come ?. Not forgetting the thumb sucker who is the greatest player in the world but hang on do you have to win a trophy to be considered one of the best players in Europe ? that rules the berties out.

Something will be amiss if ronaldo doesn't win the top honour, and I'm also perplexed that rio is missing, ballack is there though?

gerry spot on he should and lets hope it does cheer him up. maybe all the problems surrounding the credit crunch are weighing heavy on his mind.

Danny, Wilmslow...

fantastic post, i agree totally, except that i want to see Palin win as she is one hot momma!!!

but, seriously, it is now refreshing for those of us who have been against this sulking brat since his antics in the summer, that more and more fans are coming over to the same thinking.

he scored his first goal at Old Trafford, in the carling cup, no real emotion, when he should have been full of it, trying to show to the fans that he does care, that he is sorry and he is here for the remainder of his contract. same again on saturday, i watched him, no joy, no emotion, nothing...were was he when wazza scored his goal??

yes he deserves to win the Ballon D'or, he was immense last season and we loved him...singing Viva Ronaldo on away trips was brillant, now i cant even muster the strength to clap him!!

he will realise one day, maybe many years from now, how good he had it at Old Trafford, how he was adored and loved...a few more grand at Madrid wont buy that..not even when he has a new coach every 18 months

Neal, sentiments that 'non-match' going fans will never understand. I've found myself able to applaud him, but like you, it feels under duress. Wether he will one day 'look back in anger' remains to be seen... i doubt it though. IMO, he just doesn't seem that sort!

Vidic but no Ferdinand or Evra? What a joke. It just goes to show footballing ignorance does actually extend south of the channel.

i cant get my head with this ronaldo not smiling when hes scored or assisted.
It really grates me that he still wants away and you can see thats his only wish.
Well ronnie lad when they come knocking on the door next time ill say bye bye ron lad and dont think it will be all happy days at real, manager after manager players in players out.
Youll wish you had never moved, and i know if you was to return youd go to chavski for the money.

come on
just because he didnt react after scoring a goal
and people starts speculating again
berbatov didnt celebrate his goal either
so what does that says?

imo, it could be that they were not satisfied with their performance for that game

seriously speaking
if i were to rate ronaldo performance for that game base on the standards we know he is capable of
i would give him a mere 4/10
he didnt have a bad game of course, but it would most probably be considered a bad game by his standards

Rio not on the list just keeps showing how we have to win a trophy to have at least a player on the nominees. Chelsea has not won anything last season but they scooped 3 of the 4 awards for CL.I ll even say sorry to Evra who for me he is the best left back in the world.

The abscence of Rio from that list makes it a farce. Ronny should be home and dry.
His attitude is taking the sheen of any performance.
