Manchester United

Preview: AaB Aalborg v United

SIDELINED: Owen Hargreaves

OWEN Hargreaves and Gary Neville were the big-name absentees for United as Sir Alex Ferguson's side headed to Denmark for the Champions League clash with Aalborg.

Hargreaves is struggling again with a knee injury that has bothered him since his arrival from Bayern Munich last season and has been left at home for more treatment.

However, Neville's absence was not immediately explained by United officials.

The Reds captain seemed to come through Saturday's win over Bolton unscathed after almost 18 months on the sidelines following major ankle surgery, plus hamstring and calf trouble.

His absence probably means an immediate recall for Wes Brown.

Otherwise, Ferguson had a full strength side as they look to kick-start the defence of their trophy, with Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Saturday's goalscorers Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney vying for the striking slots.

Ferguson will come up against old foe Bruce Rioch in Denmark.

Aalborg, who are languishing towards the bottom of the Danish Superligaen with just seven points from their first eight games, are managed by former Arsenal, Bolton and Wigan boss Bruce Rioch.

Rioch has won every home fixture against Ferguson, but that record will come up against its sternest test yet this time.

The players to look out for are Polish international Marek Saganowski and Sweden's Andreas Johansson.

The ground holds 10,000 but the home faithful will be fearful of Dimitar Berbatov, who scored against the side in last season's UEFA Cup while at Tottenham.

United's last trip to Denmark ended in defeat, however, when the Reds lost 1-0 to FC Copenhagen back in 2006.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Amos, Rafael, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Evra, O'Shea, Fletcher, Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Park, Giggs, Nani, Gibson, Berbatov, Tevez, Rooney, Welbeck.

I'm starting to really worry now that we've bought an absolute crock - Even Louise Saha is turning out for Everton now!!!!
Just how can this guy have ever got through a proper medical - someone should be sacked! He had the whole close season and pre season to get fit and he's still in a crumpled heap - just look at him down there with his head in his hands. He's been led there for three soddin' weeks now!

Hargreaves worries me.... he gets some stick on here, but I still believe that he is a fantastic player and would be in my first choice line up. I thought and hoped the knee problems were behind him.

Does anyone know where Carrick is with injury?

Looking forward to this game after a shaky start to the season. The Bolton win at the weekend was much what i had expected though i did feel we would score a few more than 2. In this game however I can't honestly see there being a problem. I fully expect Aalborg to start with a very defensive team in the hope of holding United to a draw but Uniteds forwards just have too much class and quality for that to happen. Indeed I think United could try sum of the younger players for this match as I doubt that United have much to worry about.

Manchester United (XI) 4-3-3 : Van der Sar, Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Fletcher, Ronaldo, Anderson, Scholes, Berbatov, Rooney. (Subs) : Amos, Brown, Ferdinand, O'Shea, Park, Giggs, Nani, Tevez, Welbeck.

As you can see I've put all the emphasis on attack, with starts for both Evans and Rafael to gain more experience. I see Rafael as an important player in this game as he will look to attack (like Evra does) at every opportunity. Also with the likes of Tevez, Nani and Welbeck on the bench we should be able to mix it up after an hour to give the likes of Berbatov, Ronaldo and Anderson a rest. All in all United should win comfortably by 3 goals.

Support the Team and Live the Dream.....

Surely this is three points in the bag while Celtic and Villereal draw. This is a chance to play Raphael at full back in a very attacking formation. 4-3-3. Ronny, Fletcher and Nani. Tevez and Rooney with Berb just ahead of them.

lew and simon i agree that it may be a good opportunity to get rds in the team and provide some attacking influence.

hopefully we will start to see the best in young master wayne now as well

Red J, Carrick is not expected to be fit until the beginning of November. Judging by last season, he may take a few games after that to properly get back in the swing of things.

We should get 3 points here but nowdays you cannot take anything for granted. The indifferent start, coupled with injuries to key personnel (Carrick and Ronaldo), and lack of fitness has me a little worried. Plus, the fact that our forwards cannot put away simple chances. Some of this can be put down to the fact that our midfield has been unsettle for most of the current season. Last year with Scholes and Hargeaves out injuried we played Carrick and Anderson which turned out to be a good pairing but this year even that consistency has been removed. I would be much happier if we had another holding/defensive midfield that we can be relied on. OH is not that at the moment and while Fletch has done a deceit job he not that defensive minded. We need to play a little quicker than we doing at the moment. Let just get the 3 points and go home.

I agree with Sam Davis here.....we cant take a win for granted....with the inconsistent and indifferent start that we have had and also we are not sure where or whom the goals will come from...thank god for CR7,he continued from where he left of last year....i am already getting the jitters for next season, when he might not be around.....

What's going on with Hargreaves. We have bought a player with an incurable knee condition for upwards of 18million. Plays one game then out for a month...been there done that with Saha.

How was this not diagnosed at the medical?

We need a midfield purchase of prooven quality and experience in January.

HOW MANY GAMES DOES CARRICK PLAY?
Hargreaves all the trouble to get him for what another sick note.Fergie should play de Silva and Possebon and forget Brown.
Play Manucho until Berbatov wakes up.

Danny, the season before last, Carrick played more games than any player other than Rooney & Ronaldo. Last season, he played missed 7 league games through injury.

i say put together the 3 amigos from last season asap.

if 2 of the 3 "best" midfield players in world football together with what was europes best defence and attack last season cant cope with the minnows from denmark its time to pack up.

suspect we will adopt our usual cautious qualifying mode for this one. play a game that suits the danes and give them a fighting chance just to make interesting.

What's up with Wes? Is he now second choice behind the Neviller when he's available, or is SAF simply trying to give GN a run of games? With the emergence of Rafael and Evans, are his chances, barring further injury to GN going to be reduced? Surely he deserves to continue as RB after his steady performances last season...

As for OH, he brings so much to the matches when he plays - whether in the middle or on the right, but his knee condition is obviously a huge concern. If it is degenerative, I fear we may be forced to endure the play 1 match, rest 5 match rotation for the duration of his time at OT. We need to sign a dominant box-to-box midfielder, or hope that Possebon and/or Anderson can develop into the midfield general role...god do I miss my man Roy.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS TEAM! I remember losing to "Danish minnows" a couple of seasons ago - and Aalborg will surely try to prevent us from playing our game like FC Copenhagen did. They lost 3-2 to Tottenham last season after leading 2-0 at the break. Therefore: just go there and get the job done!

We never did get an explanation for the Hargreaves purchase. He was not fit when we bought him at an inflated price and has never been fit since. Never more than 60% last season according to his own opinion.
It's a complete scandal. He will take his wages for as long as possible before early retirement while turning out maybe a few times a year.
Who benefited financially from this crazy piece of business apart from Bayern , the player and his agent? Who was in charge of researching his history and supervising his medical? Have the Glazers had an explanation? They certainly deserve one and so do we.
He will never be consistently fit enough for top flight football and given his inoperable condition and his age, he should be an insurance write-off. If there was an insurance company out there daft enough to accept the risk, we should get the necessary medical opinion now, collect the money and use it to find a top class midfielder who is fit enough to play for us.

Brown is being sold to City in January for 20 million,Fletcher is off to Chelsea for another 20 million.
Eric I like your team but would Have MANUCHO on the bench.

Fergie will no doubt underestimate this team and probable start with Fletcher, Oshea and Giggs in midfield. We will get 2-0 down and then send in the cavalry in the 85th minute. Rioch knows how to beat SAF so unless we send a skilful and unexpected line up out there, it could be a long night.(God I hope this post looks stupid tomorrow night)

It is indeed frustrating to know about Hargreaves` knee problem. Perhaps Utd should send him to a renowned knee specialist to have it mend once and for all because he is a quality player to have.

Fergie hasn't a CLUE, any post you make will look stupid - your ridiculous nick says it all.

Report This Reply

Hey Gary, history does a habit of repeating its self and SAF never seams to learn. Theres nothing more rediculous than bringing Oshea on and leaving Tevez on the bench. Fergie does have a history of starting weakened teams instead of starting strong and then releave players.

Report This Reply

Fergie hasn't a CLUE - if history has a habit of repeating itself, doesn't that mean the team under SAF will almost certainly win a major piece of silverware yet again this season?

Report This Reply

Fergie hasn't a CLUE, so Tevez should play in central midfield or left back then? Your argument doesn't make any sense. Oh, and if you'd actually read any of the comments made by SAF leading up to this game you'd find that he won't play a weakened side but his quote "strongest side". And I've just seen the lineup and can indeed confirm it is a strong, well balanced lineup. Keyword here is balance - Anderson will not provide that effectively, which is why O'Shea is needed.
