The England duo both sat out training earlier this week, Neville with a calf strain and Carrick after picking up a bug in Nigeria.
But, with time running out before the Premier League champions begin their title defence against Newcastle on August 17, Ferguson intends to give both men, plus Nani, who will be suspended for the Magpies clash, some valuable game time at Wembley.
"They need some minutes on the clock before the start of the season," said Ferguson.
"The Community Shield is a prestigious match but I have used players in it who were not quite fit and we are more or less in the same situation again."
Among the players who will not be considered is Wayne Rooney, who returns to training today after suffering the same virus as Carrick, although Ferguson accepts it will be a "big job" to get him fit to face Newcastle.
Owen Hargreaves is looking at the meeting with Portsmouth at Fratton Park the following week after having injections in his knee to cure a tendinitis problem, while Ben Foster has suffered some swelling in his knee which will keep him on the sidelines.
"You can suffer this kind of thing from time to time when you have had a cruciate operation," said Ferguson of the England keeper.
"We are trying to manage the swelling but he is not ready to take part in any games. It is unfortunate for the lad because he was looking forward to the new season."
United's fitness worries are also a concern for England coach Fabio Capello, who could find himself deprived of five players for the friendly with the Czech Republic on August 20.

It will probably be the usual slow start this year, with the prats in the press joyfully saying the bubble has burst! I fully expect Utd to start changing up the gears once the Champion League comp gets fully underway, when injuries as such have started to even out and SAF can start looking to playing a more settled team.
Great news that Rooney is back in training. He should at least be in the squad for the Newcastle game.
Team against Newcastle:
Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Evra will make up the midfield.
Giggs and Tevez upfront. Rooney will come on in the second half at 0-0 and score the winner?
I'm sure SAF will do his best to get through this mine field of problems. Its certainly makes sense giving them a run out to see where their fitness levels are exactly.
I sincerely hope they have enough top class cover !!!
I hope they will be ok and continue to win !
Its not a good sign that Gary Neville is picking up knocks already.
For the Chrity shield we should paly Vidic as an old fashioned Centre Forward! and put Evans at the back with Ferdinand. Put the biggest side we can on the park and knock them about just like their body checking tatics last year against Ronaldo. Then SAF can put the nut on Rednapp in the fight at the end of the game.
It's the only way this game is going to be ineteresting!
Let's see Fabio play and see if he's as good as Raphael and Rodrigo
There is just way too many games in a very short period of time. Are we truly surprised by all these injuries. Fergie must cut down on all the tours and pre season matches.
Why the heck is there an England friendly on the 20th. The season has just started. There are european qualification matches, national friendlies, the olympics and the start of the premiership. Just nuts. Players are not machines.
Apparently we've made an approach for David Silva of Valencia.
He's a good player and his versatility would appeal to Fergie as he can play on either wing or in a more withdrawn striker role.
Valencia are strapped for cash, so I believe either he or David Villa will have to be sold.
He isn't exactly the player we need at this point in time, but if he could be snared at the right price, he could be seen as a replacement for Ronaldo when he eventually does leave.
Barca are supposedly also in the hunt, so being a Spanish national, he may prefer to remain at home.
GARY SHOULD HANG UP HIS BOOTS WE HAVE THE Brazilian and Brown.
I would use the Charity Shield to play FC and DW up top thus keeping Tevez fresh for Newcastle.
I think Rooney will be fit for this match as he has the constitution of a dray horse.
Lets get ready to rumble.
Headache? What headache? It's a pre-season friendly. Play who needs to get fit.
I'd like us to start with Campbell and Tevez up front, rather than Giggs, but as for the rest of them. Play everyone who needs a game.
On a slightly different subject, our problem position for the start of the season isn't forward, it's right wing. At the moment it looks like Gibson or Fletcher are likely starters and neither are really satisfactory there. Giggs could be moved over there with Evra left midfield but we don't have a lot of other options with Nani, Ronaldo, Anderson, Hargreaves and Park out. Once Rooney returns we could play 4-3-3 and play Fletcher narrow with Scholes and Carrick.
Red Dawn,
Barca are apparently on the verge of signing Silva.
I agree with you, he's a very exiting player, but not what we need even though Ronnie might go next summer.
It's clear we are the only team in for Berbatov, but Fergie dosen't seem to want to pay spurs asking price.
Maybe as the clock ticks down to the 31st, then they will have to work on united's terms.
Yes, you could be right there regarding Berbatov Daniel.
Ramos has said that there has been no approach from Barcelona, so the quotes attributed to Berbatov in the Spanish media saying he'd prefer Barca over United are most likely false. I had a feeling they would be anyway, as we all know what the Spanish media are like.
Berbatov can buy his contract out next summer, so perhaps Fergie is hoping Spurs cave in and accept Uniteds offer under this kind of pressure, but I'm sure Spurs are thinking in a similar way, as they know we need a striker so are willing to continue the game of chicken for awhile longer.
It will be a case of who swerves first.
Regarding Silva, he is in contract negotiations with Valencia at the moment but they have stalled. Perhaps his agent is just using Uniteds 'supposed' interest to put pressure on the club into offering him the terms he wants.
Barca are interested in Silva yes, but I haven't heard anything about them being close to signing the player.
Fair play to Mandy Henry for asking the manager today about new signings.
The amount of times Stuart Gardner has interviewed the manager recently and never asked was making me think he was afraid to ask him lol.
Anyway, the manager said they were looking at "A few options" at the moment, and said with the European Championships taking place this year that tranfer activity usual quietens down until they are over, so things can take a bit longer than usual because of that.
Play the DaSilva twins in right/left midfield with Scholes and Rodrigo/carrick in central midfield. In attach, play Tevez and Cambell. The defence takes care of itself.
Red Dawn, It's just speculation that Barca and Valencia have been talking and are close to a deal.
As you said, it's a known fact that they have to sell either Silva or Villa and they would rather it be Silva.
I don't think he will come to United anyway.
As for Berbatov, he has only ever wanted United and hopefully Spurs will give in first.
I think it will be him or nobody.
I do not care what team SAF puts out I will be there to see the new look Wembley if we win it's a bonus.
Yes I do consider Utd. unfit players will have a bearing on the next fortnight. Perhaps as I have said all along, if we sign a good striker this could make up for it. Better use Saha(though I think he is past it) than no-one at all. I still say Huntelaar or Eto'o should still be considered

I think what's emerging from the pre season games is Da Silva at right back and Possebon appear to have it. Throw in Nani and Anderson in their second full season and you have the makings of a very exciting team. Fergie will sign either Silva or Berbie or both and there will be no stopping us. Some teams including Pompey have strengthened nicely but we are the champions. Let the games begin.

Silva won't never refuse Manchester if they came calling. Ramos, Cassilas and Robinho are all on record of fancying going to Manchester because the pound is in abundance there and the team is the the number one team in England and Europe and who doesn't like winners?
But I watched Barca vs Chivas last night and I must admit they look formidable and a far better team than we are currently but when our best players are back, that should be different.
