As the Old Trafford outfit prepared to play the second match of the Vodacom Challenge against Orlando Pirates in South Africa today, Fergie said: "We did a lot of stocking up last summer and bought players who were at the right ages.
"That was part of a policy we developed two years ago - to bring in young players. We're delighted with how that's gone and we think they can progress even further.
"If you take the squad I had in Moscow for the Champions League final, I had 23 players and those 23 players will still be there.
"It's a strong squad so we're happy with it at the moment. Obviously we always try to improve but it can be difficult to get the right kind of players.
Reasons
"There are always reasons why clubs don't want to sell, just like we don't want to sell our best players, so that makes things a little difficult. But I'm very happy with the squad I have."
England defender Rio Ferdinand could return to the side after sitting out the draw against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday because of a back spasm.
Fergie said: "His back is not so stiff at the moment. If he trains well, he will certainly start.
"He will want to get back into the action and I think it is important he plays."
And he added: "We are expecting another competitive game and that is what we need at the moment.
"We played the Pirates two years ago and it was a good match. I think they have progressed so we will be tested."
Fergie has yet to make any additions but has already made one bid for an unnamed player thought to be Dimitar Berbatov. Last season he brought in Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Nani and Anderson.
That strength in depth led to a double with Chelsea being defeated in the Champions League final.
Do you think the current United squad will win silverware again next season? Have your say.

Personally, I don't rate Johnny Evans at all, and would not be confident about him covering Vidic or Rio at CB.
Silvestre makes too many mistakes, especially at CB. He'd be ok to cover left back though.
Wes Brown has to start the season at right back. There is no point changing a back four that was so solid last season. Neville may be better going forward, but Brown is a better defender, and a defenders first priority is to defend.
I don't fancy Brown at CB though. He doesn't have the height for that position in my opinion and can be easily exposed in the air.
Everything said, we are light in central defence and could do with some quality cover there.
Regarding a new striker....
We've been after one now for 2 years, since Nistelrooy left and we still haven't signed anyone.
It would be suicide to start the new season again without bringing one in, so that really has to be the priority.
I expect Berbatov to arrivve though.

Same dribble he sprouted after 99. Whatever happened to the 2 or 3 players we were supposed to be getting??? (Gills words not mine) Still amazed we haven`t strengthened while chelsea (and SPURS!!!!) have been going about business buying quality players. We will not be champions this year.

But I beleive Nani will have matured a bit more as a player in his 2nd full season, just as Ronaldo did and I definitely think that Anderson will break his duck this coming season and be the creative free scoring midfielder to take us back to the younger days of a certain Paul Scholes.
Other than that, we really need to promote the youth at the club and bring them through, otherwise there is no point in having an academy. Young players will stopping joining us because they will feel like there is no point being here if they are never going to get the opportunity and then be sold off to teams in lower divisions.

On a side note anybody else still have a big question mark over Nani ? young and that but he seems to lack the ability to think.

But i still worry about our defence. we seem to be taking a big risk on neville staying fit. if an injury happens to vidic or rio we really want brown steppign in, btu if he has to play rb then we have the choice of silvestre or the untested evans.
apart from that i think our squad is pretty much perfect, although i hope anderson can start scoring and scholes can maintain a consistent performance level

On Nani, I don't remember him playing shed loads of games but I was pleasantly surprised with the stats I saw for him the other day - 3 goals and 9 assists in the PL alone last season. I think he played well in the bits we saw of him during the Euro and he can only improve. He's a bloody good crosser too.
A level head - you decide (22/07/2008 at 13:30)
The squad we have is the squad which won us the undermentioned double last year. (Pity that has been overshadowed by other topics this summer.)
Why break it up by shipping out fringe players that when called upon have done excellent job for the club.
In all areas we were strong last year, although a bit more choice up front would have been nice we managed without. I'd like Berbatov in to address that but no others (unless players leave).
Even if we don't win the championship again this year, the ride to May will be exiting and that's what its all about. Ups and downs supporting your club.
As long as we give City and Liverpool a good mullering home and away I'll be satisfied and if we win the title then fantastic.
No wholesale changes required. Other clubs feel the need to spend, either to catch us up, placate new managers or just for the sake of it.

He has great qualities and can be a brilliant central player aswell as a winger ,that goal against l.pool was such a screamer that when l.pool were in full song of youll never/cut totally short.
It was brilliant the way he got the ball and just advanced being persued by l.pool players and what a goal,or should i say goooooooooooooooooal.
Top class i thinks.

The Silva Twins are training with the reserves at present. They are not yet fit.
Rodrigo is not on the tour, he is with the reserves also.

I don't see how Manucho can get his papers. He didn't play in the Angolan qualifiers through injury. Whilst that may just about get rid of a couple of matches he didn't play in 24 months ago, he still doesn't appear to have met the criteria to automatically get his permit.
I guess that Campbell will go back out on loan. There's a lot of interest in him and he does need to learn a lot before he can take his place in the first team. Welbeck will come good but I don't know whether he'd be better at OT or on loan. His style would require a ball-playing team, rather than a kick and rush side. So I'm not sure who would be suitable. I'd personally like him to stay.
Which brings us to Saha. We're in an incredibly weak position with Saha. Whilst there is some interest in clubs buying him from us, no-one wants to pay unless he plays. Understandably. Saha is under no pressure to leave. He's earning more now than he could at Fulham or Sunderland and he has a year left on his contract (although it's sometimes quoted as two years). If it's a year, he'd be better off seeing it out at OT, getting fit and proving his worth and then picking up a much better deal with signing on fee at the end of it. I can't see him leaving and we can't easily force him to leave.
So, in the scheme of things, we don't 'need' a striker but it would be nice.
Personally, I think we are more in need of one more defender.

I think there is sufficient strength in central midfield. This is probably going to be the last full season for Scholes (although I wish there were a way to clone him and keep him going forever) and I'm looking forward to seeing Anderson have a good season. Giggs will be used sparingly and I would like to see a left winger coming in. Park is a great worker but will never be more than a squad player and I'm not sure about Nani. As for Ronaldo, let's see whether he can put the summer behind him. My fear is that he will spend most of the year tripping over his bottom lip that will be hanging out. I can't believe I am saying this but the sooner we get shut and replace him with a real Red, the better.
As for the forward line, we clearly need a striker. I just hope Berbatov is the right choice. I would have liked to see Benzema arrive.
But, I reckon Fergie probably knows what he is doing better than the rest of us (Veron excluded) and that's good enough for me. If there were quality players out there to be signed, he would be in for them. I think we are doing the right thing in growing our own and bringing in talented youth signings. This has to be the way forward if the club is to maintain a sensible and sustainable economic strategy.

Yes, I know we need an extra attacker (Tevez and Rooney, willing workers though they are, were put on too much last season) but I've maintained that since the 'new United' emerged in the run-up to the League Cup win in Cardiff in February 2006, the perfect 'big man' for the fast mobile attacking that United favour is Louis Saha. If he stays fit (physically and mentally) for the next 12 months then we'd have no worries, especially with Wellbeck coming through and the unknown quantity that is Manucho.
The trouble with Saha is that it is an exceptionally big IF - that's why names like Berbatov, Huntelaar, Benzema, Eto'o even Robinho keep getting thrown up.
I'm a fan of Berbatov but I fear signing him could cause more problems than he solves. If we play him from the start of games, that would mean Ronaldo, Rooney or Tevez being relegated to the bench - and Berbatov's not as good as any of these. Yet he will expect a starting role, and if he's on the bench he might just sulk.
Not just that, we should learn from our own recent past. We signed a fantastic player in Veron seven summers ago, but had to reshuffle our three-in-a-row team to accommodate him, particularly the great Paul Scholes, who was shunted from pillar to post. Scholesy suffered and United suffered. Sign Berbatov and history kight repeat itself. And older fans might enjoy remembering how the signing of Rodney Marsh ruined City's title chances in 1972.
That's why I believe that if we are to sign a new striker then it must be Benzema, who is young enough to be moulded into the United way while possessing all the attributes that we need. And if we can't have him now then we should wait until we can.
We should also have faith in the kids. Rossi would have answered our striking questions, but he didn't get a decent enough run in the first team to prove himself, and we could live to regret letting him go. Similarly Ebanks-Blake. Selling Pique could also turn out to be a mistake, although I'm not convinced he is the calibre of Rossi.
So what I'm saying is, let's see the likes of Eagles being given a proper chance. He's too good to be wallowing in the reserves and too good for the Championship. Friends who follow other Premier clubs (like Spurs) would love to have him on their books (they'd also bite our hands off to get Fletcher, by the way).
Fergie makes great play of our traditions. Well, one of our traditions is giving youngsters a chance. So we should give such as Rodrigo a sniff of the first team and see how he performs (not just a one-off League Cup tie). And Wellbeck, too - he's just about ready as it is, so let him have a taste of the big league.
Fergie's right when he says there's not a lot wrong with his squad, or indeed the reserves and youth.
There is one position he needs to sort out quickly, though. And that is his No 2. Queiroz was a good counter-balance - that's why their partnership worked. Fergie needs a complementary talent, not a Yes-man, who has or will earn the respect of not just his players but those of other clubs.

De Guvnor, Stretford, Manchester (22/07/2008 at 16:54)
Perhaps he can, you never know but from all the games that I've seen him play for Porto he was only ever in one of those two positions.
Cat Stabber - I know that you are passionate about the team and want what's best for the team, that's why I am not going to attack your comments, as we are all on the same side and shouldn't be in-fighting. Difference of opinion maybe but nothing more than that. However I feel that you may have over looked something that everyone else picks up on with regards to the 'fringe' players.
They can be, the true backbone of a team, the workers or non glory hunters. They probably know in their heart of hearts that they aren't going to get ahead of certain players but they will be there when needed when the bigs stars are suspended or injured. Proud to wear the shirt and give their heart & soul for the cause with a fighting spirit rather than complain and ask for higher wages all the time. We could sign the players that you would like as cover but only 11 stars can play in the team, so what would we do with 'star 14' signed in the summer from a club that he was playing 1st team football week in week out and an International just to sit unhappy on a bench with big wages, whilst his international career goes downhill for lack of being played.
It's not fair on him or us and he would only cause disruption
