MANCHESTER United are sweating over news on Brazil midfielder Anderson after he was injured during his country’s 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw with Argentina in the early hours of this morning.
The 20-year-old had to be taken off on a stretcher in the first half in Belo Horizonte after appearing to twist his knee.
The extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, but Anderson was clearly in distress as he left pitch, raising concerns that he could have damaged his ligaments.
It is potentially more bad news for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is suffering a nightmare summer following the Premier League and Champions League success last season.
He is already facing a fight to keep hold of Cristiano Ronaldo and assistant Carlos Queiroz, so an injury to one his star performers last term is the last thing he wanted to hear while on holiday in the south of France.

Hopefully not too serious. Here are some names for you: Sneijder, Rakitic, Banega, Veloso, Ashavin, Lahm. We could do a swap deal with real bringing Sneijder and £50m to Old Trafford. Then we could buy the rest of the list.
This is turning out to be a very frustrating summer. We should be basking in the glory of a fantastic season, instead its been will they go wont they go with ronaldo and queiroz? Players snubbing us and now this news on Anderson.Lets hope this is not serious because this boy will be a star next season.
Sneijder is the only player i would consider a good enough swap for Ronaldo plus £50mil forget Robinho as he isnt good enough and would require a work permit and you can only have 3 non EU players in your team in a game
Initial word is it's not too serious, just a "minor twist". Dream scenario would be him missing the Olympics and being at Old Trafford for the start of the season. Ps With the time difference, I don't supposed there'll be concrete news until later on this evening.
galwayred, for me it is a frustrating summer because reds like yourself are buying into every single story that is being printed in the dirtsheets. You do realise that this is concerted meida campaign against our club, and until people wake up and realise that 95% of the garbage that is written is untrue, papers are always guna win. Give me a quote directly from Ronaldos mouth that he wants to leave, there isnt one, give me a quote from Portugal or Quieroz that he is leaving there isnt one, and with regards to players snubbing us, what we miss out on one 17 year old and it is all doom and gloom, if we really wanted that 17 year old Ferguson would have pulled out all the stops and got him no problem, but lets face it, if the boy came, who was he guna put out of the team, Nani, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Anderson. He was more than likely looking first team football and that is something that we could not offer.
Now with regards to Anderson i have two fingers crossed that it is nothing serious because i feel next season, injury permitting, he could be our star man!
But please reds, don't believe anything you read in the dirtsheets or web sites until you see direct quotes coming from someones mouth! This is a campaign to bring us down and peg or two after our glorious season! But what these idiots don't realise is that this kind of speculation in the long run makes our club stronger, ferguson thrives on it, it is called seige mentality, however it is the fans i worry about they believe all this nonsence and start getting on each others, players and managers back!
finger crossed in not serious ligament damaged, hes already broken his leg he doesn't need another serious injury, that likely to keep him out for most of the season.
Ok, correction. I see the club website is speculating it could be anything from a twist to having screwed his cruciate. It's going to be an agonising wait.
this could be a massive blow if it is serious. lets hope its nothing more than a tweak! scholesy will be playing at lot less next season and we need young anderson to step in and show more signs like last season - except for being able to score a few goals as well
To leave the field on a stretcher is nothing dramatic these days.If it's a normal none career threatening injury he has plenty of time to recover before the season kicks off.Good name for a newspaper."THE DAILY ANXIETY."
After Park Ji Sung, the its Anderson. I hope Tevez not follow them too.
Otherwise MU would be in deep quicksand.
SAF must be hurry, settling down the issue with Ronaldo & who are his transfer targets.
If MU must let CR7 go then it is a must putting Wesley Sneijder + Arjen Robben + Sergio Ramos into the package of exchange. Lets put Saha includes in the exchange of CR7 to Real Madrid.
Thus pour the money to get Ronaldinho or Sam Eto'o; Podolski; Arda Turan; Joao Moutinho; Simao Sabrosa to cover the impact of the loss CR7 (if he finally disappear from OT) & the injured midfielder; striker & winger.
Meanwhile MU must start to offer the chance to play for bench list like Manucho; Eagles; Gibson; Simpson; Campbell; the brazilian twins; and one-two striker of reserves ranks.
They deserve experience to get maturity. Give them chance as Arsene Wenger use to do with his young guns.
Andesons mighty strong hell pull through quickly, and watch him next season.
What it doesn't mention here is that the injury occurred as a result of a tackle from filthy, mouthy dipper Mascherano.
Hope it's not too serious, Anderson.
I saw the first half of the match.
Anderson had the ball a few yards outside the penalty area, when Mascherano came in and took it off him. Anderson wen't down, but it was by no means a bad fall. They showed the replay and I couldn't see where his knee could have been twisted, and it's certainly not ligament damage as some of the stirers like to put out.
He played on for a little while after the tackle, but then went down pointing at his left knee and went off.
As I already said, it wasn't bad. The probability is he just took hard bang to outside of his left knee from the force of the impact of the fall.
He played an absolute stinker up to the point where he was taken off anyway, and no doubt would have been taken off at half time.
He looked like he didn't care out on the pitch, and was very lazy.
It couldn't have been tiredness from a long season, because he didn't kick a ball for us in open play after the Chelsea game at the bridge, but natually could have been lacking sharpness having not played in so long, although he did play a part against Paraguay a few days earlier.
If he showed the same attitude in training for United towards the latter end of last season like he did for Brazil on the pitch last night, it would explain why the manager wasn't even giving him a subs appearance.
Anderson hasn't played well for quite some time now, and it is worrying. It would be good news if he wasn't included in the Olympic Squad, but unless his injury isn't serious (which it wont be), I can't see that happening.
He's going to miss the start of the season for us, so with no United preparation under his belt, it's going to be difficult for him to get started and make the impact alot of us were expecting next season.
It gets worse. You know who did it don't you? Only a Liverpool player - Mascherano...
Oh no..our summer are getting from BAD to WORSE
By the way, when articles say 'he was taken off on a stretcher', don't read too much into that, because as soon as Anderson went down last night (and all he did was sit down), the stretcher cart came on and Anderson sat up on the stretcher himself, then was taken away.
It didn't by any means look a bad injury. I saw thought it was just more of a precaution.
As far as I can make out, the cruciate ligament angle is completely unsubstantiated speculation culled from internet chat forums (ie random punters watching on tv). The only (apparently) informed news comes from the Brazilian team doctor saying it's no more than a minor twist. We'll just have to wait and see.
not another kick in the stones! hope your right RED DAWN,a fit anderson will have a massive part to play in our season.
I dont like the tone of the latest coomments in that rag marca from reals general director "We would willingly reach an agreement with Manchester United if it is possible, that is to say, if they want to sell and if the price was affordable." sounds to me that they know ronaldos intentions and are moving on to the final stage of negociating a deal prob for alot less than talked about in the papers.
hope im wrong, what do people think?
Sligo Red, I see the opposite to you. I see Madrid realising that even if Ronaldo wanted to go they couldn't afford what United would ask. They are laying the ground for backing out. It's similar to what happened with Kaka. They gave the impression that they were in negotiations with Madrid but they weren't.
It's hard to gauge injuries like this from TV footage. I was convinced we'd seen the last of Vidic for 6 months when he was carried off in Rome. But what do I know?
People need to relax.
I saw the first half last night and in all fairness, Mascherano won the ball fair and square from Anderson. There was no intent whatsoever to injury the player.
Anderson went over after the interception, and looking at the replay it seemed a nothing fall, but his left knee took a small bit of an impact to the floor from the force of his other leg coming down on top of it.
He continued on for a bit after that even, but then sat down on the pitch, the stretcher car comes on, Anderson gets up and sits on the back of the cart on the stretcher and he's taken away.
It looked nothing at all to me, maybe just bruising, but I'd be very surprised if it were serious.
You get some website blowing it out of all proportion saying the following:
"After a robust first-half tackle by Liverpool's Mascherano during the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, Anderson collapsed in pain clutching his knee and, despite lengthy medical treatment, was unable to continue. He left the pitch on a stretcher in obvious pain and looked close to tears".
That is absolute rubbish. He was sat up looking at his leg as he was being driven off, but there was no tears at all.
You'd swear he stood on a land mine the way some people talk.
No.Injury is as bad as it looks on tv.Watched the match last night.Typical macherano tackle.Forget ronaldo anderson has guile and passion.fingers crossed.
That's 3 ifs in one sentence sligo red. It looks like a hasty retreat to me.
I love how Red Dawn turns an intially positive "the injury is not that bad" comment into his usual judgement day suicidal moanings. How do you do it Red Dawn!??! Everytime!
I hope he is ok , he is a potential star and a good young player !!!
Ronaldo ummmmmmmmmmm let him go if he really wants to go
who knows the truth !!!
