Ronaldo saga rumbles on

Cristiano Ronaldo takes the captain's armband in Portugal's Euro 2008 opener
CRISTIANO Ronaldo insists he has still not decided on where he would like to be playing his club football next season.

The Portugal international has been the centre of the summer's biggest transfer saga, with Spanish giants Real Madrid keen admirers of the Manchester United winger.

United are adamant the 23-year-old is not for sale, but speculation about Ronaldo's future persists and the player himself admitted after helping Portugal open their Euro 2008 campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey that he did not know where he will be plying his trade next season.

"I still don't know where I will play, I have not decided yet. I will talk after the European Championships," he said in quotes reported by Spanish newspaper Marca

Ronaldo is adamant he is not letting the situation distract him from helping Portugal have a good tournament, though.

"I have convinced myself that I cannot worry about this, so I am calm," he added.

Ronaldo was handed the Portugal captaincy during the second half of their victory over Turkey in Geneva, taking over the armband from Nuno Gomes.

On that, Ronaldo said: "I've already been captain on a few occasions and, to tell the truth, the responsibility is always the same, but I am not going to lie and say that I don't like being captain of the national team."

I am beginning to again believe that Ronaldo will stay (as I did right after the Champs. final). I now wonder whether the Terra reports were valid and Ronny is saying that he'll decide after the Euros. As I've said previously, I think he's very torn. Utd are making it hard for him to just say he wants to go (because of success and also contract) and I think if they offered him a revised contract again he would stay. Would need to feel sure that the rest of the squad wouldn't be p'ed off about that and of course it would seem very mercenary. But I think he'd be happy to play for Real later in his career if he felt sure they'd want him in a few years. If I were him (and not a Man U fan) I'd also be torn--very happy and successful versus a chance to go to the team you see as the ultimate team but not actually guaranteed to be as happy or successful. I think the lad needs someone else to decide it for him. His mum's words may yet swing it.

More rubbish being posted in Marca.

Amazing isn't it, that this is the only newspaper to have quotes from the player after last nights match.

He needs to sort his head out,United are the strongest team in the Prem and Europe and look to be able to dominate in Europe!!He's not won everything with United yet! He's still got to win the Super Cup,That'll give his new and upcoming CR7 sportswear the global recognition he'd crave!!Raul is number 7 at Real and they're thinking of retiring his jersey when he retires!!

Please people do not get 'sucked in' by this article! Red Dawn has summed this up perfectly. Don't waste anymore time on this rubbish!

It must also be noted when speaking about this saga as a whole, is that part of the Real Madrid plan will be to turn the United fans against Ronaldo, which is happening to a certain degree.

You must not fall into their trap.

Thankfully Fergie's on holiday & he cant make anymore 'rot in the reserves' statements. Clearly that went down like a lead balloon with the player & it's a ridiculous scenario anyway. Looking at Portugal they've a couple of players that would improve United especially in CM.

yawn! yawn! yawn!

thats how i feel on this

If he's the best player in the world then he should be the best paid so we should offer him a better deal. He should certainly be earning more than John Terry! If that's not enough sell him for the best possible price and move on.

Like his future depends on him and him alone! Whereas a player can refuse to go to a club he is being sold to (Re: Gareth Bale choosing Spurs over Man Utd) or the club refuse to sell the player to a club he wants even after wearing the foreign stripe (Re: Heinze being denied chance to join Liverpool by Man Utd), it is not up to the player to quit the club unless he triggers a release clause.

Red Dawn exactly right.
I think it was very interesting reading a comment by someone the other day "This sort of behaviour is the reason why he will never be as adored as beckham keane etc". Lets not forget that Becks missed a game once against leeds because he went shopping with posh instead of training the day before. Keano the last time we won the champions league left us hanging for 6 months when he could left for free before signing a new contract! Lets not call for a public lynching just yet!

Tell me this then RedDawn, why cannot Ronaldo just confirm that he will be at United next year? This would all be over if he did.

Little wonder they call this the "silly season". So, we're supposed to believe everything we see in the media, whether it be the Real Madrid propaganda arm "Marca", some obscure "well-respected" website Terra, or the complete rubbish found in the typical UK newspaper. One would hope the idiots who actually believe this stuff will get a clue. Alas, there is no hope, as long as gullible fools keep falling for this tripe. Ronny ain't going anywhere, especially to a rubbish club like Real Madrid, which is run by hapless imbeciles like Calderon. Ronnie just wants a pay raise. He deserves it.

M.E.N. needs to stop taking articles from Marca... this is pathetic. Ronaldo needs to get it into his head that he is not going to leave OT next season. Maybe after that. So let him tell SAF that he wants to leave. But just not yet. That way he might actually get game time.

Hi Ron, just remember that all those that went before you from Man U to Madrid didn't have a good ending. Beckham and van Nistelrooy were just two good examples. Stay and the fans will appreciate your loyalty to the club that brought you the stardom.

How about this then guys....CR press conference 'Happy right now at utd will see out my contract then and only then will I look at other options as to where I will play' problem solved marca / real madrid look foolish then they sod of an annoy someone else...and please don't tell me he doesn't have to say anything yes he does he has a signed commitment to player for utd for another 4 years!
Actually rather than interupt his euro tournament he could have done this a month ago! I know this is the poisonous marca and calderon but he has had many opportunities to dismiss their claims but he hasn't and its this lack of conviction either way that is most annoying and is definitely beginning to make the fans turn against him....and if he thinks he can come back for another year before he sods off to real madrid then he would definitely not be welcome....either commit to honour your contract or don't come back after the summer.

Really don't want to read anymore on this. If he goes, then fine, we get a mountain of cash to strngthen. If he stays, then we have this problem again next season.

IMO, he's disruptive, setting a bad precedent, just because you are a good player you don't have to put yourself on sale and disrupt the club. My preference is now we sell him for 70m+ and get Benzema and Messi - just a shame they won't be leaving their clubs!

He was absolutely brilliant against turkey and alot of united fans are saying we don't need him...but is there a better, more exciting player at the moment? We need him no doubt about that....united must not sell to madrid but also keep ronaldo content by offering him an improved contract...

I was with Ryan Giggs and Darren Ferguson in SPAIN they both said RONALDO is making a big mistake and an even bigger one if he thinks he can get one over on Fergie.
FANS expect respect and RONALDO is not showing any.

Dont sell him unless he is terribly unhappy !!
make him happy please !

God! Is anyone bored of this?!

Has there been one unequivocal, clearly attributed statement from Ronaldo in any of these reports? No. Why do you think the reports all come from obscure sources with dubious attribution? Because it's spin, nothing more. We can spend all day, every day, analysing these fictions and half-truths but with no satisfactory outcome. That's the nature of the beast, so long as it's based on rumour and supposition and possibility then this story will run and run. Meanwhile I, like many others who read these posts, have a life to live and this sort of nonsense is not helping me to live it.

itsmyclubnotyours,

He has said it many times over the past few weeks. Just do a simple google search.

It's quotes like "I want to stay" that the papers like to dismiss, because it more or less ends the saga, hence they don't sell as many newspapers as the ones that read "I want to leave", which he has never said. The quotes that appeared on the Brazilian site were without doubt, planted.

Here are a few 'genuine' quotes from Ronaldo just before Euro 2008:

"I think I will definitely be here next season. Yes, I want to stay. I have played five years for this club and I'd love to stay here.

"I love the people, the players are fantastic, the atmosphere is unbelievable, the staff are great. That is the reason I want to stay.

"We won the most important trophies this season. I want to do it again next season but no one knows the future.

"I want to stay, I feel very happy in the club. I win trophies, the people are friendly, supporters are amazing, everything is fun for me. It's very good."

"This is a young team and we have everything to win next year," added Ronaldo.

"We want to win the Champions League again and we have a good chance. We have a good team spirit.

"I can get better. The goals are not the most important thing. Maybe I will play well next year but I won't score as many goals.

"But I'm going to try to do my best. Every season I've improved and I want to improve next year."

What more does he have to say, and why should he have to keep repeating himself everytime the media creates contradictory stories?

He has a Euro 2008 to concentrate on.
