VAN DER SAR: The Dutch international made a fine save when Ferdinand was put under pressure by Ballack in the first half, even if it was his failure to command his area that provided the opportunity. Slipped as Lampard made most of two deflections for equaliser. Saved Anelka's penalty to secure win.
8
BROWN: Has earned rave reviews for his defensive performances this season, but his cross for Ronaldo's goal was every bit as good as the Portuguese could have produced. Defensively he was as sound as ever, but Chelsea rarely threatened from the flanks - particularly the listless Malouda.
7
FERDINAND: Confusion with Van der Sar almost gifted Ballack a first-half goal, then inadvertently deflected into the path of Lampard for Chelsea to equalise just before the break. Found his feet in the second half as he dominated on the ground and in the air.
7
VIDIC: Overcame injury fears and looked comfortable with anything Chelsea sent up in the air. For all Chelsea's dominance in the second half, they created few genuine openings, which owed much to another assured display from the big Serbian.
8
EVRA: Always threatening going forward and, together with Ronaldo, caused Essien no end of trouble. Caused few problems by Joe Cole, who rarely looked to have the pace or trickery to get the better of the Frenchman.
7
HARGREAVES: Selected to combat Chelsea's considerable power in midfield, but the England international also provided an attacking option down the right. Tirelessly worked in defence and attack to more than justify his selection. After a patchy season, it was a performance that gave a tantalising glimpse of what United can expect in the future. 7
SCHOLES: The Ginger magician's goal booked United's place in Moscow and he was promised a starting berth long before they reached the final. Early clash of heads with Makelele threatened to make it a short night's work, then seemed to get bogged down with consistent gripes with the Frenchman. Passing as assured as ever. Faded after the break.
7
CARRICK: Forced an outstanding save from Cech, which would have put United well in control, but on second look, the midfielder might have picked his spot. Allowed United's midfield to dictate the game in the first half, but later required to do more defensively.
8
RONALDO: His fiercest critics still question whether he can produce on the biggest stage. But showed that he was up for the occasion when skipping past Essien early on. His headed goal was simply unstoppable and set United on their way, but rarely managed to repeat his first half-form after the break. His saved penalty looked to have cost Reds before John Terry's miss.
7
ROONEY: Once again showed his maturity by doing much of his good work deep, but twice opened up Chelsea in the first-half with crosses of the highest order. Struggled to make an impact in the second-half when forced to feed on scraps. 7
TEVEZ: Fergie showed his intent to go for it from the start by opting for the Argentine instead of Ji Sung Park. Was a real threat as Chelsea's defence struggled to contain, but twice failed to score from glorious opportunities in the first half. Became increasingly isolated after the break as United ran out of attacking ideas.
7
SUBSTITUTES
GIGGS: (for Scholes, 87) Broke Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time appearance record for United when coming on as a late substitute. Missed a glorious close-range chance with a left-foot prod in the first period of extra time after good work from Evra. Coolly converted his penalty when called on.
7
NANI: (for Rooney, 101) The Portuguese scored his vital penalty in the dramatic shoot-out. 7
ANDERSON: (for Brown, 120) Scored his penalty with his only touch of the game.
7
SIR ALEX FERGUSON: All his noises beforehand suggested he wasn't going to go like-for-like with Chelsea's powerhouses and proved that by naming an ambitious three-man attack. Paid dividends in the first half as United made all the running and created enough chances to kill the game. Like Grant, took time to make changes, bringing Giggs on at the death, but it might have proved inspired had the Welshman converted a golden opportunity in extra time.
8
Subs not used: Fletcher, Silvestre, O'Shea, Kuszcak
CHELSEA: Cech 8, Essien 7, Carvalho 7, Terry 7, Ashley Cole 7, Ballack 7, Makelele 7 (Belletti, 120), Lampard 8, Joe Cole 6 (Anelka 5, 99, Malouda 5 (Kalou 5, 90), Drogba 7. Subs not used: Shevchenko, Mikel, Alex, Cudicini.
AVRAM GRANT: Luck certainly wasn't on his side when first Drogba and then Lampard struck the woodwork in the second half and in extra time.
8
Attendance: 69,000
Bookings: United: Scholes (22), Ferdinand (43), Vidic (111), Tevez (116); Chelsea: Makelele (22), Carvalho (45), Ballack (116), Essien (117)
SENT OFF: Drogba (116)

United could have put the game away in the first half. Chelsea were unfortunate not to capitalize on their chances in the second half. Going into the penalties I thought that United had a good chance because Cech is not a very good penalty stopper. Although I'm a United fan, I must say that I felt sorry for Terry and Grant. That's destiny for you.

ManU was extremely lucky and did not deserve to win...but it's a part of the game.
Just do not whine for another ten years even if you get some unlucky breaks.

VDS was excellent when called upon,
Rooneys passing was excellent, Tevez's running and effort was superb.
Brown proved he deserves a spot in our 11 with a magnifcent display. Carrick and Hargraves worked superbly in the centre. For me Vidic was MOTM.
lee (22/05/2008 at 08:40)
the reason he went off was cause he was knackered cause of all the running to make space behind him.

Rooney was aweful again. I look foward to seeing a refreshed and much improved Rooney next season but I will still give him 10 for gracing the pitch and a couple of good croses.
Double Champions! Orgasmic

Carrick in 2 seasons can tell to his ex Spurs teamates:2 leagues,1 CL and 1 semi final of the CL.Superb signing but still has massive room for improvement especially how to play against teams with 3 CM.

It would have been nice to win it before pens, but the match stats show United had more possession, more shots ON target, perhaps the more clear-cut opportunities to score especially in the first half and I lost count of the number of times they put the ball out for Chelski 'injuries'.
Chelski did themselves no PR favours with their surrounding the ref etc and WHAT WAS Kenyon doing, going up first to get the loser's medal? There's the class gap - they send up sleazy Kenyon and we send Sir Bobby Charlton, England World Cup Winner and Manchester United legend!
I was really pleased Fergie went for the higher risk attacking formation from the start. I feared another 'clever' tactical setup and a tight game. He deserves so much credit!
Interesting performance from Ronaldo. I saw him relaxed and smiling during the opening anthems. He seemed happy and 'loose' throughout the first half, till Chelsea scored, and then we got the arms-up when he lost the ball and he looked tight-faced for much of the rest of the game and his performance dropped. He needs to be happy to perform!
I read someone criticising Rooney. Please! It wasn't his best game, but he set up the move of the match and was involved in a lot of good stuff, especially in the first half. The trouble with Rooney is he's not 'me-me-me' enough to be a great goalscorer.

Wes: 8 (capped a cracking season with another nerveless display of SOLID Wesley-esque defending - I can't believe early season some mugs wanted O'Shea/Fletch in the team instead.)
Evra: 8 (what I love about Evra, whether it's Derby at home or Barca away, he plays EXACTLY the same way. Nothing fazes him and it's a privilege to watch a full back with such fantastic skill and touch. As Fergie once said: "Evra? The lad's just a footballer." Very true.)
Ferdinand: 7 (It's very hard to warm to the idiot but there's no doubt the self-styled "world's greatest defender" is actually playing like a bona fide world-class defender. Mind you, bit of a Zambrotta-esque 'pass' to Essien for their equaliser.)
Vidic: 8 (Great game last night - with all his recent injury shenanigans, I was worried he might struggle but a real warrior when we came under the cosh second half. Some vital interceptions/clearing headers.)
Hargreaves: 7 (Still a phenomenally awkward footballer, he's one of the most energy inefficient midfielders I've ever seen - so much puff to do the simplest things. Having said that, he seems a very strong personality and dispatched a cracking penalty under great pressure after Glory Boy's miss.)
Carrick: 7 (pretty typical fare from our Geordie ballerina - looked decent supporting Scholesy first half but left Lampard for their goal and disappeared for long periods as the game went on. To be fair, he stepped up to the plate for the shoot-out and took a quality pen.)
Scholesy: 11 (Just watch a re-run and check out some of the ninja's first half passing. Some of his little dinks and chips were reminiscent of a young Seve Ballesteros. Totally bossed the game first 45 but did fade when Chelsea stepped it up after the break. Still, to see Scholesy lift the European Cup is a personal dream come true - I really thought his chance had gone.)
Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo: 8 (Hope he doesn't leave, but if he does he played a massive part in last night's victory. Another cracking header and he finally seems to appreciate that less is definitely more when it comes to impacting on big games: don't try so hard, cut down on the needless tricks and just let it happen. Bottled the pen big-time but, to be fair, we've seen Baresi, Zico and Maradona do the same.)
Wazza: 4 (Did play a big part in setting up the Tevez chances but, much as it pains me to say it, his overall performance was woeful: dreadful control, terrible passing, he just couldn't do anything right. Hope this doesn't damage his confidence long-term.)
Carlitos "Apache" Tevez: 6 (By the standards of a European Cup Final, he missed two complete sitters. Worked hard, as ever, and was quite correct in highlighting Chelsea's lack of sportsmanship in the run-up to Drogba's red card. Good penalty.)
Giggs: 7 (Gave the ball away a lot in classic "late-period Giggs" fashion, but took a very good penalty. Should really think about packing it in, though.)
Nani: 7 (I really like Nani - I think he's a very tough character and seems to enjoy responsibility. Again, nerveless pen under the utmost pressure).
Ander-son-son-son: 7 (Cult hero exits bench to whack home penalty - classic!).
Fergie: 9 (At long last, some actual ATTACKING football in Europe! Ok, it only lasted 45 mins but if Tevez had been doing his job we'd have had the game sewn up. Deploying CR7 wide left was unusually clever so was clearly a Queiroz idea.)
Ps We've won it three times!!!!!

There are at least two mistakes in my earlier post. First off all, Rooney did a ok def job today, and he had one perfect longpass to Ronaldo on the counterattack... So yeah, he did something good. But to say he had a good game will be to give hime to much credit. Apart from the one pass and some good defending he went missing in action! So yes, I do not think he deserves the same rating as Ronaldo and Tevez.
Tevez, legend? Okey, thats a bit fast after this game... But belive me, he will be a legend...
