The Argentina international has enjoyed a superb debut campaign with the Reds following an acrimonious summer move from West Ham.
Having signed on a two-year loan, United officials are investigating the best way to sort out Tevez's ownership situation with Kia Joorabchian and formalise the contract.
Given the length of time it took to get Tevez to Old Trafford in the first place, reaching a resolution is unlikely to be easy.
But, after waking to confirmation of Cristiano Ronaldo's eventual desire to play in Spain, Sir Alex Ferguson will be comforted by Tevez's statement of intent.
"I would certainly love to extend my contract," said the 24-year-old.
"I would go and sign right now if the opportunity was there."
It is hardly a surprise that Tevez, like most South Americans - and Portuguese for that matter - would one day like to experience life in Spain.
But he is unequivocal about his desire to remain with United and win trophies under Ferguson.
"La Liga is a possibility eventually but that day is a long way off," he said.
"I know a lot of South Americans prefer to play in Italy or Spain when they move to Europe but I am really pleased that I came here.
Comparisons
"This is the best league in the world and I am among some of the best footballers in the world.
"I am not one to be making comparisons between clubs but Manchester United are right up there with anyone in the world.
"When there were problems last summer, everyone assured me it would reach a positive conclusion and I am glad it did.
"From day one, everyone has treated me well and made me feel right at home. The fans at Manchester United even shout 'Argentina'. That is why I am so happy here."
Not that he has has abandoned his roots, even after two years in England.
He remains a Boca Juniors fan at heart, which is perhaps no surprise given his childhood in Buenos Aires and the fact he played for the club aged just 16.
Perhaps more of a shock, certainly to Ferguson, is the fact he set his alarm for 4am yesterday to see Boca held 2-2 in the Libertadores Cup by Mexican side Atlas.
"I follow all the games live when I can and although the Atlas result was not good, I still believe we can get to the final," he said.
The use of the word 'we' was quickly corrected but Tevez does little to dissuade anyone of his passion for home.
However, there are more pressing concerns just at the moment, like beating Chelsea in the Champions League final next Wednesday.
In collecting his first major European medal by helping United overcome Wigan to lift the Premier League last weekend, Tevez knows he can cap a truly memorable campaign by winning in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
"It is great to live through and experience the build-up to such a big game," he said.
"I know, even in South America, after the World Cup and the domestic tournaments, it is the most followed competition. For a player, being involved in it, it is the second biggest thing you can be involved in after the World Cup."
What is your verdict on Tevez' first season at United? Have your say.

There is still one year to run with his loan, so there is no panic.
If were to sign permanently now, and at some stage next season he was to pick up a serious injury, then your investment could be down the drain.
Obviously we'll all be delighted to have him signed permanently eventually, but there is no panic just yet, although ofcourse Carlos is keen to sort his future out, which in understandable.

Tevez has been great this season but we have still not seen him at his best.
I long for Wednesday - Tevez could become a Man U legend within a week!

Each player has said what he wants and it's very easy to interpret.

I was delighted when I heard we'd finally got him albeit on a two-year loan. His goals have been crucial for us.
Hopefully he can score a few more crucial goals on Wednesday night.
Maybe Ronaldo should pay attention to Carlos' committment to the Red cause.
Thanks for signing for United, Carlos

When we agreed the loan deal for Tevez, an outright fee was also installed, so that is the sum we will pay. I'd say it's around £10 - £15 million. Add that to the loan fees and his total value would be around £20 - £25 million.
A few months back the media had a comment from Ferguson saying the outright fee was 'Cheap', which was a strange thing to say, and an insult in my opinion to his representative.
Then again, he could say what he wanted as the fee was already set in stone.

"Change the record" is completely relevant because of you banging on about Ronaldo here after your diatribe on the other story.
I think that it's you who needs to learn some English if you cannot understand that.

Ronaldo will be with us for a very long time.

Since Day 1 people have had an agenda against Ronaldo and it only heightened after the WC.
Every season there were muppets clamouring for him to go and most people probably yourself included stating Ronaldo should go instead of Ruud.
His performances have quitened some down but there have still been those trying to knock him down with comments like he doesn't perform in the big games, even tho his record against the top teams is second to none!
Your attitude (and others) towards him have always meant that you see things far more negatively then to people that admire his ability like me and Lee.
Ronaldo has said so many times that he wants to stay that you can understand how boring it must get!
There are probably about 100 articles about him saying how happy is to stay at the club and what he would like to achieve and we have all acknowledged that he will not end his career here as with Tevez so really cant see what the problem is.
He is 23...23! He has plenty of years ahead of him why would he want to leave the club now when we are so successful and he is improving each year.
For goodness sake he signed a 5 year contract last season and has won the league and in the CL final. He was as committed then as Tevez is now to sign the contract.
More to the point, why would SAF sell him? What message would that say to current and future players?
SAF will leave before Ronaldo I can almost guarantee it as there is no need to sell and no need for him to go!

Carlitos wore a united hoodie when he signed for corinthians in brazil. I was living in uruguay at the time and everybody in uruguay and argentina couldnt understand why he went there instead of coming to europe and it was an open secret he was a united fan
Anybody else rather gutted that there won't be a parade this year coz of the numpty rangers fans? who could ever forget the 750,000 on the streets in 99 and the mass outpourings of pride and joy on the city? To have that taken away from us again by something not even remotely connected to us is heart breaking
