Bobby Charlton (1968)

Once regarded as the most famous footballer on the planet. Every fan from Broughton to Beijing, Weaste to Woollangong knew ‘our Bobby'.Served United impeccably through three decades and ‘legend’ could have been invented to describe his contribution to the Reds’ football history. Possessed the fiercest shot in British football but scored a rare header in the ‘68 final. His second goal wrapped up an emotional night for Charlton and Sir Matt Busby. Could shoot powerfully and accurately with either foot and had the ability to ghost past defenders with a great body swerve. Also capped 106 times by his country and Charlton’s record of 49 goals remains unbeaten. However, his United appearance record has just been equalled by Ryan Giggs. Briefly went into management at Preston after leaving Old Trafford in 1973 but not with any great success. A genuine icon of the game.

Ryan Giggs (1999)

Started on the right wing in Barcelona but later reverted to his more familiar role on the left after Jesper Blomqvist’s substitution. And for most of his Old Trafford career, the Salford born star has provided vital balance on the left flank. Saddled with the tag of the ‘new George Best’ after breaking into the first team. But while he boasted many of the same attributes, it wasn’t a comparison easily made. Certainly, the son of former Swinton rugby league star, Danny Wilson, was as naturally talented. Often relied upon to create chances than score them though this season he did chalk up his 100th League goal. Is prone to wayward crossing but unquestionably deserves a place in the OId Trafford Hall of Fame. Unlike Best, he shunned publicity and avoided the pitfalls that eventually destroyed the Irishman.

Cristiano Ronaldo (2008)

How many superlatives are for the Portuguese superstar? He’s certainly earned them this season with a record breaking 41 goals and possibly more to come next Wednesday. Ronaldo is the most exciting talent in world football with the ability to destroy the meanest of defences. Can go past defenders with sheer speed or footwork that wouldn’t look out of place on Strictly Come Dancing. Scores goals with his right and left feet and any centre forward worth his salt would covet Ronaldo’s heading prowess. Could teach even David Beckham a few tricks with his free kick technique. Real Madrid would willingly pay £100 million for his talents. It’s claimed Ronaldo hasn’t always delivered in the biggest games. Now he has a wonderful opportunity to remove any last vestige of doubt about his talent. Tomorrow the spotlight falls on the remaining midfield slot.

Who would you pick? Have your say.
