Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson had declared he would attempt to have the England striker fit for the last Premier League match with Wigan on Sunday.
Rooney has been suffering with a hip injury, also sparking scare stories about a possible hernia complaint, since the Blackburn match 17 days ago.
He aggravated it further against Chelsea and has been forced to sit out the last two matches in the Champions League against Barcelona and Saturday's league win against West Ham.
Though Fergie had looked upon a possible comeback at Wigan, United were not prepared to rush him back and risk the possibility of a Champions League final KO.
Had the title been secured prior to the JJB date, then Rooney was likely to be left out.
But Chelsea have forced the championship race to the last 90 minutes.
United remain hot favourites and have the vital goal difference advantage but if things are not working out at Wigan, then the insurance of Rooney on the bench looks the likely scenario.
It would leave the player and the Reds sweating on a 10-day rest after that before the European showpiece.
Nemanja Vidic, however, will return at Wigan after having to sit out a mandatory 10-day FA break following his concussion suffered at Stamford Bridge.
United's open style has seen them hit 78 Premier Legaue goals and it is that stat that Owen Hargreaves believes means the Reds deserve the crown.
"It would be nice if teams like United who play attacking football and score lots of goals got their reward," he said. "It is very rare to see a team at the top of the table with such a massive goal difference."
Should United risk Rooney against Wigan? Have your say.

He has a bad injury history for a player so young, and interestingly his major injuries all seem to happen at the end of the season. Maybe he is not robust enough to play a whole season week in, week out - but this season the lack of another striker i.e Saha has meant he has had to. Hopefully we'll address this in the summer.

As for Rooney's injury, SAF gave a fairly detailed explanation before the game against West Ham. It's nothing worse than bruising. The slightly delayed recovery is because the bruising has got in and around his hip-joint and has been slow to clear. I would be very surprised if Rooney isn't on the benhc, at the very least, on Sunday.

I wonder about next week but it's an interesting point - is Saha "on schedule" to be fit by May 21st?
He wouldn't be match fit, nor season fit, but would his Man U career be saved should he get the winning goal in Moscow?
One can dream, no?

I do not want to be pessimistic but I would like to share something with the younger United fans who read this page. In the 1971-72 season, after a long four horses battle between Liverpool, Leeds, Derby and Man City it looked like the great Leeds team would be crowned Champions on the last day as they had an easy game at home to Wolves who were flirting with relegation. The game was on a Wednesday and on the eve Derby had a most difficult away game to Arsenal. Derby won and Leeds lost to Wolves! Derby won the Championship by one point but the interesting point is that Derby had never lead, not even once, during that season. They took the lead on the final day to win the title!!
Bad omen! I hope not.

you have never seen it as a problem. i have shown quite clearly that when 1 or even 2 of our forwards are missing we dont score as many goals and even more crucial our win ratio falls alarmingly. and the reason is our other players dont score enough goals to compensate.
on sunday i would settle for a 1-0 win.

Undobtedly he is a fine striker but theres no point having him in a few games here and there. If we cant sell him then he can be there but only as long as we get another striker along with Manucho although would like to think Manucho Wellbeck and Campbell could provide the cover.
As for this season, I would play:
VDS
Brown Vidic Rio Evra
Carrick,Hargreaves,Anderson(Scholes doesnt need to get risked)
Park,Tevez,Ronaldo
Rooney has to be on the bench for cover with Scholes,Giggs and O'shea.
The only change I would make would maybe swap Giggs for one of the three in the midfield as that would provide a more attacking emphasis and Giggs looked fresh and improved against West Ham.
Either way I am confident this team has the willl, desire and resiliance to get the win and the trophy we deserve.

clear that Rooney will only play if 100% fit. I think if the Roon has his way he'll be there.

I do think that Rooney's injury is alot worse than what it seems. I don't think he will play against Wigan but then again we don't really need him to. We have enough midfielders to chip in. Vidic is back so Hargreaves can come back into midfield. With Scholes, Carrick, Park and Giggs with Ronnie and Tevez upfront.

As for Saha, well I believe his new mode of transport is a private ambulance.
