Vidic goes for scan

UNITED were today anxiously awaiting the outcome of a scan on defender Nemanja Vidic's knee injury which resulted in him being stretchered off in the 33rd minute in Rome last night.

Vidic arrived home in the early hours of this morning on crutches with officials and fans fearing a serious injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I pray it is not serious, because he is such an integral part of our team.

"We think it might just be a nerve injury but we can't be sure at this moment."

One good thing about last night's win was that goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar appeared to come through unscathed.

The Dutchman's fitness had been a concern, because he has been troubled with a groin problem.

Ferguson said: "He's had one or two injuries which have given us a bit of concern, but he came through well and showed why he has 120 caps. His experience is vital.

"He made one incredible save in the second half, but we rode our luck in the first 15 minutes of the second half. You get those breaks sometimes."

Will be gutted if Vida is out for long but we can cope without him far better than we could cope with Rio. He is such a great defender to play alongside that he even made Sheasy look good last night!

Vidic is a pillar of our defence no question, but can anyone tell me what's the point of bringing on a central defender like Piqué, grabbed from Barcellona and then not using him in his role when Vidic gets hurt? Does SAF have no faith in him, are Wes or JOS better than him? I'm really puzzled, especially since he played so well against Romain the first round.

This is not looking good. If the injury was pretty straight forward surely the first scan would have confirmed this. I really hope (and pray) that it means only a 2-3 weeks off as he will be vital against The Drog later this month at Chavski Bridge. Still if we have to go along without him at least we have Wes/JOS/Pique for cover and not too slow/too short Heinze! At least Mikel is back to cover Evra and if Nev makes it things will look alot brighter for Centre Half cover. Awaiting the decision on Vida....
