Wembley jeers won't stop silence

POIGNANT: England's players respect the minute's silence
WEMBLEY jeers will not force a rethink over the minute's silence at Sunday's Manchester derby.

United officials insisted that there would not be any changes to the planned tribute to the 23 people, including eight of the Busby Babes, who died at Munich 50 years ago.

A United spokesman told M.E.N. Sport today: "We have no intention of changing our plans."

The club is standing firm in spite of a mindless few at Wembley for last night's England friendly with Switzerland, who marred the pre-match honour to the Munich victims.

Small sections of the 90,000 crowd refused to observe the minute's silence on what was the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

The distasteful scenes, which forced the minute's silence to be cut short by 20 seconds, were in marked contrast to events in Dublin, Belfast and Wrexham.

There, prior to international friendlies featuring the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales, the mark of respect to the victims was observed impeccably at all three venues.

The signs at Wembley were ominous even before both sets of players lined up to commemorate those who died in 1958, with pockets of the home crowd disrespectfully jeering the Swiss national anthem.

To their credit, the small section of Swiss supporters along with the vast majority of England fans, remained silent as pictures of Duncan Edwards andother members of the Busby Babes beamed across massive screens at either end of the stadium.

Shamefully, some home fans couldn't show the same decorum, whistling and shouting towards the end of the tribute.

The FA had originally planned a minute's applause by way of tribute, but had a change of hearts so that they would be in line with Sunday's traditional silent tribute.

Was these scumbags caught? Surely it was easy to spot them or point them out? why not name and shame them as well as ban them from FA games for life?

So the Brazil fans didnt make more noise than a couple of mindless idiots at wembley?? Yeah right......

Morons. But hey this country produces them by the bucket load.

I was at the Ireland match last night, and the minute's silence there was NOT impeccably observed. It was cut short after about thirty seconds.

Erm, observed impeccably at Belfast? I don't think so!!! I watched the start of that game and there numerous jeers and klaxons!

As for Sunday, as a Blue I hope we can show more respect. To put it bluntly, I hate United with a passion. Not the fans but the club. But on Sunday I will be thinking of your losses. Even being picky about local geography does not take away the fact that many of those who perished were born and bred in Manchester. I watched the programme on BBC last night about Harry Greg and it brought tears to my eyes. Any Blues who also saw it will, I'm sure, not be able to even consider any kind of behaviour other than total respect. Here's hoping!

So its not just city fans then?

I thought the minutes silence seemed short at the time? What utter morons, can you believe how low some people will stoop. The same deranged idiots who started booing just before we scored I would think.
I was very pleased that Wes got the call but the press in general gave him quite a hard time this morning - mainly about his distribution as usual!

The BBC must have turned the stadium microphones sound down then? Because I heard virtually nothing, although it was definitely cut short and was never a minute!

So I'm starting to think some "everybody hates us" United fans and journalists - want there to be jeers???

morons ? maybe...but is it a reflection on society or a clear indication of how much fans (drunk or not, intelligent or stupid) despise the global marketing exploiting lying manchester united plc. I guarantee if city / liverpool / leeds were to hold a minutes silence for something it would be spoilt by united.
sad but true.

as a united fan, i never really expected england "fans" to show any class or respect, just look at their record over the years, how many towns and cities have they wrecked? (even in england, on occasions!) they can't even respect a national anthem... a total embarassment to the country... i am sure that city fans, on the other hand, will do themselves justice, and show real class and dignity. then, let's hope it's a great game, fitting of the occasion, a game to make all mancunians proud!

all snowballing out of control this. No excuses for the morons. I for one will observe on sunday impeccably as its about respect and people. I mentioned before its about the moronic few that exist in every society and in every football club. Take it for what it is the minimal percentage of scurge in our society that YES would you believe it even exists at manchester utd.No one ever chastised utd fans for singing about barbeques at bradford city, of which my grandfather passed away, everyone moved on in the knowledge that sickos exist in society and best to ignore them than give them the recognition on a huge scale as is happening here. Utd fans concentrate on the 99% of fans including city that are respectful and know the real meanining of sincerity and ignore the idiotic few or are you set on making this a big issue because of our rivalry too? If so you are loosing sight of the importance of the main issue, it would be refreshing for utd fans to come on here on monday and thank the majority of city fans for their respect and totally ignore the others, 20 muppets dont make a fanbase.p.s not one of you has yet posted a reply to my previous post to condemn your own for the actions at bradford city or do you believe you are all above criticism?

Motty mentioned on MOTD that people who disrespect minutes silences anywhere stand to be banned from all football grounds so if on Sunday somebody decides to be a **** tell a steward and get them kicked out for good.

P.S. Apologies for mis-spelling Harry Gregg's name earlier!

I said bernard manning a blue through and through joked about the bradford fire and joked about not being invited to the bbq,as did (not)funny foul mouthed royston (chubby) brown, when did utd fans shout about the bradford fire as we havent played you and your not in our league.

I've watched the Munich tributes, was deeply moved by the Charlton/Gregg interviews and took my lad to the England game last night.

Sad to say, the fact that only a minority of idiots disrupted the minutes silence and it was cut short was actually better than I expected.

Ing-er-land fans boo the Swiss national anthem. Ing-er-land fans jeer their own players. Ing-er-land fans stream out of the stadium with 15 minutes to go. Ing-er-land fans argue and fight amongst themselves. Ing-er-land fans are mindless idiots.

MUFC > England.

I suspect there to at least have been some inner justice at Wembley last night. I know from my own experience that when someone goes against the general "standard" of the people in the stands, that this person will get a very harsh response back.

Not being holier than though but have been at Hillsborough mins silence and John Charles mins silence at OT and not a sound. Agree with Andy, no class or respect. I was in a pub in Leeds last night and everyone was silent. Respect where it's due, but England fans and their over-hyped team deserve each other.

Randy red - believe it or not bradford were in the premier league when paul jewell was manager, and you did have a minority singing this when you visited (a few arrests on the day). You have your minority of scurge and I was there i heard it. Secondly i am not a bradford fan my grandfather was i am a city fan. Also why do you have to point the finger at two comedians who made a living from being foul mouthed can you not apologise for your minorities actions on that day or is beyond utd fans to recieve constructive criticism? finally my point and the bigger picture is and was that the minority should be ignored and the majority of us blues should be thanked after the event for showing respect the way it should be. Finally the last time city were at bradford they laid a blue wreath at the memorial for the 56 victims and all the directors stood with me for a minutes reflection, the chairman of bradford at the time told me that they were one of the few teams to show respect in this way and personally thanked them in his programme notes, suprisingly enough utd turned up and left without any acknowledgment..fact.but I dont suppose I will get a reply from you apologising for your minorities actions on the day after all its only little bradford.

ive just read some of these comments and almost everone points their fingers at everyone else.
but i read a comment from mad pierre midlands saying utd fans would disrespect a minutes silence if liverpool/leeds etc held one.
this is absolute crap.there are idiots everywhere.and i would like to take you back some years when a certain bob paisley died.utd played city in the f.a.cup at old trafford at that time and the tannoy opperator said that the crowd should observe the minute silence and quite rightly so.but no sooner had the ref had blown for the min. a couple of shouts from the scoreboard end went out which were heard clearly.the shouts were munich related and came from some city fans, shouts that were treated with contempt from the rest of the city fans and the utd fans ,who i must say were respectfull through out the min.i know this cos i was there.and just for facts sake utd won 2-1.
at the end of the day its a game with a lot of rivalry but if anyone thinks death of a rival fan or player is good they really need to take a good look at themselves and maybe lock themselves away from people who live in the real world !!!!

Next year will be the 20th Anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster; I hope Utd don't get picked to play at anfield that weekend ?. Do you think all the away support would keep 1 mins silence ?.

Most City fans I know want to respect the silence but know for a fact that some idiots will jeer. We asked to change it to an applause to combat this behaviour, which was rejected. We dont need your permission though so all city fans who want to respect the tragedy will be clapping to drown out any jeers. I urge all city fans to applaud so that the few who dont want to respect the silence cant be heard.

I watched the Harry Gregg documentary last night and found it extremely moving. City fans owe it to Albert Scanlon and Ken Morgans to behave in the right manner and show the rest of the Country how to respect such a momentous occasion in the history of the City of Manchester.
There is a Media vendetta against City fans at the moment with all sorts of slanderous, disgusting remarks, and not just in the tabloids. We won't be given any credit, but deep down we'll know the truth and more importantly, so will the relatives and friends of the deceased.
Let's honour the dead with a great game of football and both sets of supporters refraining from the ususal abuse and bile. City are gradually improving so why not embrace the idea that Manchester can have two great football teams.
Having said that i'll settle for a dull goaless draw.
