MANCHESTER United are reportedly ready to make Cristiano Ronaldo the highest paid player in the Premier League in a bid to fend off interest from Spain or Italy.
The champions are said to be set to offer him a £140,000 a week deal with Real Madrid and Barcelona constantly linked with bank-busting raids for the Portuguese sensation.
Real have let it be known they are prepared to make him the highest paid player in their history, while latest reports from Spain say Jose Mourinho plans to take over at Barcelona – and will make Ronaldo his number one target.
Any moves from the continent are academic right now with Ronaldo contracted to United until 2012.
He has also made it clear he is happy in Manchester where he is idolised by supporters and has become one of the biggest names in the game.
But Sir Alex Ferguson and the powers that be at Old Trafford will be well aware that the double footballer of the year is currently the most sought after player in world football.
The new deal United are said to be drawing up will be worth £44m and will tie Ronaldo to the club until 2014.
It would eclipse the £130,000 a week John Terry picks up at Chelsea – making him the highest paid player in the country.
Ferguson is said to be concerned Ronaldo could leave for a cut price £10m in two years time thanks to a new ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
It would mean he could potentially leave in 2010 provided he paid up the remaining two years of his contract, which is worth £100,000 a week.
Meanwhile Arsene Wenger has revealed that he came close to landing the 22-year-old before he signed for United in 2003.
“We were very close,” he said. “We had him here much earlier – he could tell you that if he wants.
“One day I will tell you more about that story and you will be surprised.
“Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz moved and that made it very difficult.”

That could be done in say, 2009 at the earliest, if he is commited like he says he is ofcourse.
There should never be any such panic when dealing with a commited player.
BUT......
Is Ronaldo a commited player?
My Answer = No
Will Ronaldo be here for another 4 years?
My Answer = No
Manchester United are worried by the interest from Spain and Ronaldo's constant talk of wanting to play in Spain 'One Day', so therefore are attempting to extend his contract even further and offer him ridiculous money in the process.
'One Day' can be any day in the future, and when he says that, it doesn't mean 4, 5, 6 years down the road, you can be sure of that.
This summer is going to turn into a Ronaldo saga, mark my words. When he is at the Euro's, and talking to all his buddies who play in Spain who say he must join Barca or Real, he will no doubt be tempted. Look what happened at the World Cup. Ronaldo openly said he wanted to leave, and "I decide my future". The incident with Rooney played a small part, sure, but you can be sure it wasn't the full driving force behind it.
His value will be at its highest this summer, so it's the perfect time to sell, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is sold because he wants to leave.
If we could get £40 or £50 million for him now, it would be a great bit of business, because in my opinion, he's overrated. We could then use the money to buy a top class striker and a winger. Players that actually do turn up in the big games, and put on the performances when the pressure is on, like all great players do.
It's all too easy for Ron to score/turn it on when playing against teams who have lamp posts for defenders.
I believe a man once said that no one player will be bigger than the club. Well, with Ronaldo, that statement has gone out the window it seems. He has Ferguson quivering like a little schoolgirl at the thought of leaving, and the club in panic mode offering ridiculous wages. A wage structure that supposedly would never be broken (but already has).
If he's not commited, then get rid I say, but there is no way in hell I'd be offering any more money.
Fair play to Wes Brown aswell for looking for more money to extend his deal. He is quite right when he is only being offered £40,000, and Ronaldo £130,000.

If the likes of Rooney, Tevez and Anderson kick on in the next 18 months, they too will be rewarded.
Ronaldo is worth more to Man U than 44 million pounds spread over six years. If he becomes the best player in the world - and the signs are that he is just that - what is that worth?
Anderson and Nani joined in part because of Ronaldo. Who else will be lured to Man U if he is there?
And just think what a downer it would be if he joined Real. Break the bank I say.

Sorry Gerry, but it does. A comparison could be another "entertainment industry" - films. Tom Cruise = £20mil for effectively 1.5 hours work! It is all about the name.
United never pay more than 50% of turnover in wages, so don't panic. They will recoop franchising turnover and also stand a better chance of winning things with quality players.
What is obscene is the Glazers getting £40m per year profits/the plc historically taking approx 15m per year in dividends. You never complained then, and is that preferable to Ronnie making a nice buttie?

Look how we struggled to score earlier in the season without him.
Give him the money Glazer.

Spencertea the irritating Real and their odious "El Madrid insiste" does not actually mean they can insist on anything. They can lie, cheat, deny with the press all they want but at the end of the day they have to talk to United - who will simply say "Nope. not interested".
