CONTRACT rebel Wes Brown looks ready to end all speculation about his future by signing an improved deal at United.
The centre back, who is out of contract at the end of the season, looked set to call time on his Old Trafford career after United refused to meet his wage demands.
Newcastle and Tottenham were both ready to step in during this transfer window if Sir Alex Ferguson chose to cash in, rather than lose the player for nothing in the summer.
But Fergie always insisted Brown wanted to stay with the champions and has worked hard to reach an agreement with the England international.
He now looks set to sign a new four-year deal worth around £43,000 a week – significantly less than the £50,000 he reportedly snubbed earlier in the season.
The move will bring an end to months of speculation and delight Fergie who has always maintained his intention to hold onto the 28-year-old.
Ironically the debate about Brown’s future has come at a time when he is enjoying arguably his most consistent spell at United.
He has deputised for Gary Neville since March, and has helped make United the meanest defence in the Premier League this season.

For Brown, for an extra 5,000 a week, why sign for Newcastle or Tottenham? It's not worth it, and with the bonuses you're likely to incur from the Champions League, he'll break even financially anyway. For the club, they hold on to a valuable utility defender, who knows the club and has proven himself in the side. May never be a long-term starter, but he'll always get his share of games each season. He'd be expensive to replace - and there's no guarantee our next defensive signing will work out as well as Vidic and Evra - and they weren't held hostage to his agent's wage demands.
And for the fans, I think nearly all of us wanted to see him stay. As they say in American politics: Four more years! Excellent news.

He's a little short of International class but a very good player none the less and has had a good season so far.

I did not want to lose Brown, he is a very good adition to the United team.
