SIR Alex Ferguson reckons Manchester United have found the natural successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Wayne Rooney.
But the Reds boss admits the England international will never accept a prolonged spell on the substitutes' bench.
Rooney came on to turn United's FA Cup third round tie with Aston Villa last night - making his first appearance since Boxing Day following a virus.
And he showed exactly what United had been missing during the lack-lustre displays against West Ham and Birmingham - playing a part in Cristiano Ronaldo's opener and then sealing a 2-0 win with a last minute strike.
Ferguson said: "I have been trying to find a new Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a substitute - although I don't think Wayne would appreciate that.
"Wayne changed the game when he came on. He brought us thrust and enthusiasm and direct play. He attacked defenders and made a heck of a difference to the game."
Record
The watching England manager Fabio Capello cannot have helped but be impressed with Rooney's match-winning contribution - and he will know the striker will be pivotal to his plans for World Cup qualification.
For United it was an 11th straight win at Villa Park and a 13th successive victory over Villa.
"It is difficult to say why we have such a good record here," said Ferguson.
"It is a traditional, old-fashioned football ground. The fans are right on top of you and there is always a good atmosphere."

Totally different players,
with maybe similiar vision and ability to pick-up the game's rhythmn swiftly!
Though have to say Roo is more complete and Ole had talent of being a great taker-of-chances!
Thank FA for Villa Park!!
We deserved it but Villa should consider themselves unlucky to have lost yesterday(and not in replay!)
We didn't duictate the tempo of game and often played too slowly.
The final pass was often poor and we pl;ayed to deep, hence Sahá's forays to deep! - What's wrong with his game & touch?!!
Anelka, Anelka...?!
