CRISTIANO Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney pounced late on to send Manchester United into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw but with nine minutes remaining Ryan Giggs crossed for Portuguese star Ronaldo to finish from close range.
And Rooney, who injected new life into the Reds when he came on after 70 minutes, sealed the win with a smartly taken goal.
The result means United have now won 13 successive matches against Villa, while boss Sir Alex Ferguson maintained his proud record of never having lost a third round tie in the FA Cup.
There had been much pre-match hype about Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor being a contender for the England squad under new boss Fabio Capello, who was watching on from the stand.
Capello took his place at the front of the directors’ box where he was flanked by Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick and director of communications Adrian Bevington.
Agbonlahor gave an early demonstration of his pace to the Italian with a break down the left flank before squaring an inviting low cross towards Stiliyan Petrov.
But his first touch was a poor one and Edwin Van der Sar was able to collect.
Anderson was quick to spot a gap down the middle and made a powerful 50-yard run which ended with Scott Carson saving his left-footed drive from the edge of the Villa box at the second attempt.
Drive
Petrov was only just too high with a dipping 30-yard drive in an open-ended start to the game. Agbonlahor turned sharply but Rio Ferdinand was alert to the situation and blocked his shot.
United started to enjoy more of the play territorially with Anderson looking threatening in the centre of the park.
The Brazilian made another good break into the Villa box only to be eventually crowded out by the combined efforts of Nigel Reo-Coker and Wilfred Bouma.
Giggs missed a golden chance to put United ahead a minute before the interval after a mistake by Carson.
The on-loan Liverpool keeper should have dealt better with a dipping drive from Ronaldo but only parried it straight to Giggs.
But, with the goal at his mercy, the former Wales international pushed his shot wide and seemed surprised by the pace of the ball.
Villa began the second half brightly and John Carew flicked on a Young centre which Van der Sar saved down to his right even though the ball was going wide.
Michael Carrick teed up Anderson on the edge of the Villa area and, although his shot contained plenty of power, it flew well wide of Carson’s goal.
Petrov blocked a shot from Ronaldo and then Martin Laursen was relieved when he deflected a Nemanja Vidic header past his own post from a Giggs corner.
Rooney could have won the game for United after entering the action but he shot over the bar after exchanging passes with Ronaldo.
But with nine minutes left Ronaldo scrambled over the line from a Giggs centre for his 19th goal of the campaign.
And with 60 seconds remaining Rooney drilled a powerful shot past Carson into the corner of the net after Ronaldo’s initial effort had been blocked.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

again impressive display from back 4. Anderson and Park played well, lots of simple passes, keeping the game moving.
i must say that Saha is just disgusting with his lazy i cant be bothered attitude, it is so frustrating and i'm sorry Louis as i like you but your time is up...bring in Huntelaar and ship Saha out.
Also good to see Fletcher not taking up a place on the bench, hopefully the rumours of him going to birmingham are true.
but at the end of the day, another clean sheet and a win...roll on the treble.

I thought Carrick played well though not flashy but continually breaking things up and made some nice forward passes (a rare thing nowadays).
Utd pretty much ran the game while waiting to score the winner - almost as if it was inevitable ...... a bit of a yawn but always in control

Every game I really hope this will be the one that changes my mind about him, but time is surely running out. I can’t see him being with us next season unless he pulls his socks up and earns his salary.

Suppose there will be lots of moaners on here about the performance but this was a tough tie as they are going well, which we always seem to get ie last season I seem to remember we were away every round and PL opposition...some one will correct me if I am wrong!
Great midfield and defence and methinks we have the outright goal scorer we are all craving in the No. 7 shirt right now he seems to have the touch to score the spectacular as well as 'scruffy' goals....rooney, my favourite love to watch him play football how lucky are we to have these 2 in the team!
Anyone next round, none of the remaining big clubs will want to draw us out of the hat!

Villa's work ethic make them difficult to play against and they also have some very decent players. Barry & Coker in central midfield are no mugs.
United showed today how good defensively we can be. Villa had plenty of the ball but just couldn't break us down.
This was probably one of our best back four performances of the season.
Those who say Carrick was poor should watch the game again - you were certainly watching a different game to me. He played the deep lying Scholes role and did a really good job IMHO, one 'attacking' 50yd ball out the wing in the second half had 'Ginger Prince' written all over it.
Give the lad a break and some credit where it's due.

Villa made us work for it and it looked as if they would get the replay!
We were off-form - again - and played too often too deep!
Our build-up was too slow and final 3rd play & pass poor!
Anderson, Carrick & Evra were for me the choices, even though we had trouble creating!
Carrick did lots of good work - albeit in a deeper role!
Anderson needs too take time with the final pass, and he could do with a goal although that looks far off with his shots!
I do like also his vision and how often he is directing play and urging movement form team-mates!
I feel for O'Neill and Villa
a little today!
Would like to see Agbonlahor and Young in Red shirts!
Let's see what the draw brings!

"We really are a poor side"
I think that's a little OTT!
We were off-form - alas again!
However everyone should remember we have played 5 games in 12-13 days!!
I think Anderson was good and his energy and prompting reminds me of a young Keane!
Yes, we were not great but Villa made it hard for us!
Sahá and CR poor and not enough good movement in the last third!

Stick your neck in, mate.
Can't be great every week and despite our record at Villa they are a decent team.
We won and deserved too, end of story.
