Rumour mill: Reds eye Lahm

TARGET? Philipp Lahm

UNITED have been linked with a January swoop for Bayern Munich and Germany full back Philipp Lahm.

The Reds, who are set to announce record profits next month, could be ready to release some cash for the versatile 24-year-old.

Lahm can play on either flank and with doubt hanging over Wes Brown's future at the club, Lahm could be the long term successor to Gary Neville, report The Times.

Great player, but would Bayern let him go without a fight? We've already got their backs up over Hargreaves, so I doubt they'd be very pleased about us sniffing around another one of their better players.

He was certainly impressive at the world cup and is the right age, however i am not sure Bayern would be keen on him leaving. No substance in the rumour in my opinion

not the first time i have heard this little rumour, good player i cant really see this happening to be honest what would the price tag be? and look what happend with Bayern and OwenH?

I reckon we have all got more chance of seeing the versatile serb coming than this guy.

Lets hope fergie does get cash for a forward and a fullback my choice would be Shorey and Anelka.

As I have said many times on here, if Nev is at the end we must spend BIG and buy WORLD CLASS, or we will be weaker. I'm glad United are taking notice of me (well who wouldn't?). Danny Simpson is nowhere near United quality at the moment (nor is Wes as a full back), and wether he ever will be is extreemly dubious. Good news. DON'T SKIMP ON GAZ's REPLACEMENT!!!

Of course it would be brilliant if Lahm came in, but I doubt it'll happen, and with the whole year-long saga over Owen Hargreaves and the inflated transfer fee I'd rather we splash out £7m on Branislav Ivanovic and be done with the Full Back situation.

Come on Khaled, simpson has only been called up 3 or 4 times and I think he's done very well. Given an extended run he'll easily make the grade. What would have happened to gary Neville if United had rushed out and bought a ready made champion? After all, if United and a few other top Premier teams don't bring through young talent for the national team who will? As for Lahm, he's a good player, but I think the young Serb is even better. With Simpson available I'd rather see the cash go on a striker in January.

i really like this guy but why would bayern get rid? we definately need cover for evra and cover/ replacement for nev. Whilst i fully encourage bringing through young simpson, is he really ready for the chelseas, arsenals and derbys :) of this world?

We all want to see Nev back and most see the potential of DS, but there’s a gap between these two and Lahm would be an excellent choice to fill it. Don’t forget he can play on either side so provides back-up for Evra as well. I can’t see this happening in Jan unless Wes gets bought and I share the concerns about our track record with Bayern.

Saw in one of the papers that Evra is concerned he only has a year left and no-one has spoken to him about a renewal. He needn’t worry, his place must be one of the safest for the time being.

would be ideal cover for nev, evra - but bayern won't sell him.
what's this talk about wes brown leaving? he has been great for us this season - played a lot of games - and will cover if rio, vidic, nev get injured again - so i can't see him going anywhere

I would love to see Lahm at United. He was definitely one of the most impressive players at the world cup in Germany, and not only is he an excellent defender, but he is also an attacking threat from long distance. He can play on both sides of defense, which would make him the ideal candidate for us (seeing as Fergie says we need cover for LB and with Neville's injury nightmare and increasing age he can be an immediate successor to him.) He is also still young and will continue to build on our current trend of young, speedy, attacking minded players.

I think we will look to bring in cover for full back over January, but suspect that it will be an old player who will bring plenty of experience. To play full back at the moment we have GN, WB, PE, JOS, and Silvestre when he is back. We also have a number of youngsters coming through in particular Simpson, Pique (probably better at CB) and the 2 Brazilian kids are joining in Jan who are expected to do well. I think we'll look for an older player with experience to bridge the gap between now and when the youngsters are ready for the top games.

whoever watched the world cup knows this guy's very hot indeed and he scored a sreamer of an opener in the world cup and thats as a leftback aswell.
simply cant miss this chance buy this guy now nev's on skid row as we all know hearts still there but id say back up now.

I am sorry guys but the serbian guy is not a full back but a centre back. I dont think Bayern will sell Lahm and i will prefer a right back who can defend first before going forward.
Regarding Evra rumour it is just paper talk as MU is not stupid not to have started discussion. He is just that Evra agent wants probably more money as usual.

do we really need to buy anyone in January??? IMO we don't.

we have a superbly strong squad in all areas. people say right back is a problem, gary will be back soon, and so will a certain mr scholes...so if right back is still a problem then, put hargreaves there and keep anderson in the middle with the ginger prince.

simpson is an exciting kid,give him a chance and he will make it.

up front we are fine,just try and give young brandy some minutes here and there and the same with campbell when his loan ends soon with hull...get rid of dong

Agree with most the posts, would be an ideal signing - didnt realise he was still so young - but Bayern would be very reluctant to let him go. He's a good attackign full back and would complement Evra nicely

neal 07, i totally agree with you about putting Hargreaves there if things dont work there this season and give some time to Brandy and Campbell and mainly sell Dong and probably Eagles who both stop the evolution of better players. I will be happy to look at Defoe in January if we can have him for cheap even if his height is a concern bearing in mind we already have Rooney and Tevez.

Good player but it won't happen! Happy to make do this season and bring in Berbatov in the summer. Nicky Shorey is a possibility in January as cover and hopefully we can get Wes signed up. Utd through and through and a very good defender

buy! buy! buy! its that simple! owen was a major signing and is proving to be a quality player! lahm is a proven quantity and we need someone like him... still young but with so much experience! buy! buy! buy!
