Manchester United

Liverpool v United: Player ratings

Van der Sar: His lack of command in the area unhinged his defence at times. 5

Brown: Looked suspect at times and wasn't on top of his flank. 5

Ferdinand: Handled the threat of Torres with a cool head in the cauldron. 8

Vidic: Got his head or a boot on most things pumped into his zone. 7

Evra: Liverpool kept the lid on his attacks, but he was as solid as they come defensively. 7

Ronaldo: By his standards, this was disappointing. Never made any serious inroads. 4

Hargreaves: Seemed to relish his first Anfield clash and kept Reds in midfield battle. 6

Anderson: The hurly burly of a tight and frenzied engine room was right up his street. 8

Giggs: The veteran has had better days in these clashes with Liverpool. 5

Tevez: Loved the raw-boned nature of this bout and deserved to score. 8

Rooney: Put himself about, as you'd expect, and had a hand in Tevez goal. 6

Substitutes:

Carrick: (for Tevez, 83) Not much impact. 5

O'Shea: (for Anderson, 90) No time to make an impact. 5

Not used: Saha, Fletcher, Kuszczak

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise (Aurelio 80), Benayoun, Gerrard, Mascherano, Kewell (Kewell 65), Kuyt (Crouch 73), Torres.

Booked: Liverpool; Gerrard, Mascherano. United: Evra. Anderson, Brown.

Not vintage Man United but any 3points from Anfield is a good 3points.Hargreaves my man of the match, had Torres in his pocket the whole time, good performance from Carlos Tevez,Ronaldo quieter than usual, but nice cross for wonderboy who really should've made it 2 and let us all breath easier,Van Der Saar shaky at times but very good at others, Patrice was Patrice(sublime),Vidic and Rio's defensive headers we're good,Brown was okay.Giggs a bit quiet, but my word Anderson, that run in the first half was something to behold, had tears in my eyes,he's Cesc Fabregas last yr WITH PACE!!!Since we're first we can't afford any mistakes. Honestly, someone has to say it, yes, we all love Anderson but an 8?don't favour Anderson, we all drool at his potential, but lets not lie. 7would be a better mark. Then a 6for Hargreaves!?Please. All in all, the perfect birthday present for me, i'm 18 today.

Ronaldo was triple teamed whenever he got the ball...to give him a 4 is outrageous. There isn't a moment going forward that they need to put a man on him. Give him a 6 for me...and Giggs a 6 and Halsey a 4 for his biased "homer" mentality!!

I thought Wes had a very good game overall and gets a 7 from me. Rio 9,Vidic 8 and Evra another 9 - this guy is a superb little player.
Ron 5 at best, had a 15 minute spell in the second half when things went better and laid on that chance that the Roon squandered.
Hargreaves worked hard but very little creativeity.
Anderson had an excellent game overall even if he did fade slightly in the second period, deserves his 8 though. Giggs poor 5.Tevez and Rooney both worked their socks off with little to go for, both 6.
Good little cameo from Carrick and added something when he came on.
Our ball retention at times was poor and we got over ran at times in the second half.
You can see why Scholes is missed in games like this?

ronaldo 4?!!r u crazy?at least 2 man were on him every time he recieved a ball and u give him 4?!he deserved 6 at least 4 his superb pass 2 rooney and 4 few decent crosses down the left.4 his standards was dissapointing but he was still good.

A good win and an easy 3 points. Liverpool never troubled Van Der Sar, but he troubled himself enough of times lol.

Benitez got it all wrong not starting Crouch. It doesn't take a genius to know how good Vidic is in the air, so he was always going to be first to the ball against either Torres or Kuyt. Starting Crouch would have given our CD's more of a problem because he would have had those extra few inches on Vidic and would have been first to the ball.

Rio was excellent, and I'm torn between himself and Tevez for man of the match. Rio had Torres in his pocket who didn't have much of an impact.

Evra once again showed what a great left back he is because he always brings his A game against the top sides.

Anderson was outstanding in the first half, but no so much in the second, simply because our approach was more defensive.

Hargreaves did well. I was happy with his performance, but there were moments where he should have been more aware of those around him and he dwelled on the ball too long at times. He made some cracking interceptions though, so overall I was happy.

Rooney wasn't great today. Ok, it was his shot on goal that lead to Tevez tapping in, but you would have expected more from him in a big game today. He missed an absolute sitter aswell and still has alot to prove to justify the hype. Disappointing.

Ronaldo was awful for the majority of the game, even worse than I thought he would play, as once again he fails to turn up in a big game. He gave the ball away too much, his control was poor, he went down at any given opportunity and clearly dived in the first half and should have been booked for it. The only good part of his performance to note was the turn and cross for Rooney, who should have scored. MEN got it spot on with their rating of 4.

Giggs played well. Some excellent passing and control at times. There was a pass to Evra in the first half that a keyhole surgeon would have been proud of.

Tevez was excellent. Every time he got the ball he looked a danger and well deserved his goal.

Overall it was a good win, but the gulf in class between ourselves and Liverpool is clear to see. They simply can't pass it like ourselves, Arsenal and Chelsea can. It will be another 4th place finish at best for Liverpool and possibly Benitez last season in charge, as he just isn't good enough a manager.

Agree with most of the ratings including Ronaldo's 4 ! to a degree although 4 is over the top. He should have got a 5. His turn and cross to Rooney was world class. Rooneys miss was Sunday league. I didnt think Rooney did anything else other than foul and miss that chance. Tevez Anderson Rio and Evra were outstanding and when we did play football we were on another level to the predictable scousers. City have more chance of winning the league than them. Why SAF feels the need to restrain our play against any opposistion never mind a team as poor as Liverpool is beyond me.

Lee Heywood, sorry mate,
Rooney did set up the goal for tevez..

Ronaldo deserved more than a 4 as he was covered by 2 or 3 palyers everytime he had the ball. Give the 4 to Giggs who, yet again, was an onlooker for most of the game.

Report This Reply

OH a 6 are you joking he was excellent in the 2nd half just as Anderson was in the 1st both 8. Rio & Vidic both 8. Tevez & Evra 9 they were magnificent. Of course Ronaldo didn't have a good game but his threat right up front at the end helped the defence. I don't know what was wrong with VDS today luckily most of the Scousers had the same ailment. It was good to see Wes taking no nonsense from Kewell who's one of the most snide players I've seen.

A 4 for Ronaldo is far too harsh as may have said, his play for Rooney's chance was sublime. He also linked up well with Rooney moments earlier. I have no doubt if he was English he would have had a 6 or 7.

He did have a poor game tho.

Good win. Very average performance but I will take it. Rio, Vidic and Evra 8. Wes 5 his defending has been slipping lately and this game was no different. VDS 4 too many times he look shaky and did not look good at all coming for crosses. Hargreaves 7 decent effort. Anderson 6 fade quickly in the second half. Giggs 5 did not make an impact on the game. Ronaldo 6 still lacking the knowledge of when to take over the game. Excellent pass to Rooney who should have scored. Rooney 6 lots of effort. Anybody who works as hard as Rooney can never be lower than a 6. Tevez 6 and thats only because he scored the winner. Slows of play to much wanting to hold the ball and take a look. He has to know United is all about quick one touch passes attacking football. Game management by SAF 7 probably should have changed Anderson about 10 minutes earlier.

Ronaldo 4 was due to the woeful ineptness of Brown in his support to Ronnie. Ronaldo was 1 man against 2 or 3 defenders evry time because Brown wasn't helping him. Gary Neville would have given Ronnie options, SWes gave him NOTHING. Wes is a great centre half, but without doubt one of the worst attacking right backs ever seen. If Gary's never going to be back to his best BUY BUY BUY

VDS - was terrible, his mistakes are becoming worse.
Ronaldo's rating is harsh 5 at least, the tackle from Mascherano in the 1st half seemed to affect him, great pass to Rooney.
Rooney if it has been 1-1 after he missed that chance! can't beleive he missed it, but that's just Rooney all over. If Ronaldo had missed it the anti Ronaldo club would have been out in force.Anderson got to Gerrard all match which was great to see. Hargreaves was bad , Giggs was bad and can someone please tell Vidic to stop playing long ball up the pitch. Rio should be captain the way he was shouting at VDS.But i have to admit that i don't really care about the Performance, i don't care who scored, how they scored, we beat Liverpool at Anfield,Bragging rights tomorrow.

Hey, How about Our opponents ratings?

Reina : as usual did well in picking up the ball from the net. Diffcult skill to do. 2

Arbeloa : Is he on the field? errr...which one? Just give the point. 3

Hyppia : retired is his best position. 3

Carragher : A bit dissapointing, doest not apply any clumsy suplex tackle move on any united forward. 2.5

Riise : His right footed shot is very2 dangerous, especially for audience sitting near the corner flag. 3/4

Bennayoun : Superbly holding to the post, to make sure tevez on-side to score the goal. 10

Kewell : Has a Solid game, solidly useless. 0.1

Gerrard : Living up to his billing, aka rubbish. Off course Liverpool fan will still give him 10 for even being invinsible for most of the game. But this ratings is done much fairly. -5 for him.

Mascherano : Glad Alex got the right argentinian from west ham. 1.7

Torres : What so great about this guy, even Van Der Sar have to do some flapping around to give him a chance to score. 2

Kuyt : Look dangerous, no,no,no, i m not taking about his game, i m taking about his looks. 1

Subtitutes : who cares...

i will say this again brown will cost us big time sooner or later its amazing how long he has been playing for us with his lack of quality!. evra&anderson was great but giggs, rooney& ronaldo were poor.vds was woeful if we can get a right back we will be complete.

Hargreaves was outstanding as was Anderson. Another mediocre performance from Wes and Ryan. Liverpool are not a strong contender and the win by Arsenal puts some space between us and Chelsea who will challenge at the end unless Terry, Drogba and Essien are long term absentees. Cole will get a straight red if they review.

All I care about is the 3 points so it's job done in my book.

Thought Anderson was fantastic in the first half, if he'd carried that on for 90 minutes he'd have been MOM.

The back 4 was great except Wes who had a bit of an off day. VDS - dunno what was going on for the 2nd flap maybe his head wasn't right after 1st flap (for which Torres got away with nudging him).

I have to say I don't really agree with all the people saying how well OH played. I thought his awareness and passing were not great at times. And I am not one of the people who have been on here slating him in the past.

Ronnie was far from his best but not a 4. As has been pointed out, he had 2 and 3 players on him all the time and little support from Wes.

Giggs was good in patches.

I thought Tevez had a pretty good game, defintely better than Rooney who put in a lot of effort but without much reward and missed a sitter.

I also thought Carrick did well when he came on.

Rio MOM.

Let's see off Everton next week now.

I watched Chelski on tv after the Liverpool game. Some things turn out funny don't they. Just think, We now have Anderson (outstanding again today), when we could easily have been stuck with that useless prima donna Obi Mikel, or whatever his name is nowadays.

My ratings: VdS 4, Brown 2, Rio 9, Vida 8, Evra 9, Ronaldo 5, Hargreaves 9, Anderson 9, Giggs 3, Rooney 5, Tevez 8.

Just a few comments about one or two of our players:

Edwin: Still a top keeper but just one or two thoughts in my mind starting to creep in as to his eventual long term succesor. Foster?

Wes: Give Sheasy the right back slot NOW until Nev's settled back. Clearly Wes is on the way out in the summer. Get Hutton.

Hargreaves: One of my favourites but still not the Hargreaves I admired from afar at Bayern.

Ronaldo: The fact that he never performs against the big guns is a worry.

Giggsy: Whoever dares to criticise this legend is surely taking the mick! Have you ever heard any Milan fan criticse Maldini? No. I thought not.

Wazza: Strange how his form goes in bursts. He's in a mini-slump at the mo. Expect him to slip into a six or seven game scoring streak any time soon.
