NEMANJA Vidic cannot understand what all the fuss is about when United fans treat him as a cult hero.

In fact, the Serbian defender believes he is distinctly "average" as a footballer, and only gets by on application, determination and work-rate.

But United, who are still sweating on the big defender's availability for Saturday's trip to Bolton, clearly disagree, having recently handed the Serb a contract extension until 2012.

And the fans have taken his no-nonsense style to heart - something which puzzles the 26-year-old former Spartak Moscow player.

"In every game I give 100 per cent - maybe sometimes I have a bad day but I always try my best," he says. "I always want to win the ball and maybe fans recognise those things and like that about me.

"This is my game and it's how I've always played and how I'll continue to play. I'm not sure why they like me so much."

Vidic may be required for international duty this weekend after Serbia's scheduled Euro 2008 qualifying game with Kazakhstan was postponed.
