Manchester United

Preview: United v Wigan

SIR Alex Ferguson is lining up Ryan Giggs or Anderson to play in central midfield against Wigan with Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick both out injured for Manchester United.

Carrick suffered a cracked elbow against Roma in midweek and is out for six weeks while Hargreaves faces at least a fortnight on the sidelines with tendinitis.

Full-back Wes Brown is still doubtful with a knee injury and United will give him a late fitness test. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (toe) is also still out, so Tomasz Kuczszak will continue.

Wigan striker Antoine Sibierski is the only doubt for boss Chris Hutchings.

Sibierski missed last week’s 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool with a hamstring strain, leaving Wigan without both first-choice strikers as Emile Heskey continues to recover from a stress fracture of a metatarsal.

Midfielder Denny Landzaat is available again after recovering from a fractured eye socket, while winger Antonio Valencia is ready to return from a knee injury after playing 45 minutes in the reserves in midweek.

Manchester United (from): Kuczszak, Heaton, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Simpson, Pique, Ronaldo, Scholes, O'Shea, Anderson, Nani, Giggs, Rooney, Saha, Tevez.

Wigan Athletic (from): Kirkland, Melchiot, Granqvist, Bramble, Kilbane, Brown, Scharner, Skoko, Koumas, Sibierski, Bent, Aghahowa, Boyce, Cotterill, Hall, Olembe, Taylor, Valencia, Landzaat, Pollitt.

Last season: United 3 Wigan 1

Key opponent: Chris Kirkland - Former Liverpool stopper has tons of ability and could foil United

Prediction: United 2 Wigan 0 - Although they have midfield problems, United should still run out comfortable winners

1 - Nil to the fergie boys

Having Ryan or Anderson in should make the tempo higher which would help the forwards find space. I few people have commented that the reluctance to get the ball forward quicker from midfield is a key factor in the lack of goals.

Giggs in the 1st half, hope he can make 5 good passes in a row.

It would be nice to think that Fergie has enough confidence in Anderson to start him but the chances are it will be Giggs or JOS in the middle alongside Scholes.

No disrespect to Wigan but we really should be able to deal with them without the need for a DM but it seems to be the way nowadays regardless of the opposition or the fact we are playing at home. If we cant attack at OT where can we? If teams are just coming to defend, as I'm sure Wigan will, is there any need for a DM? We have enough problems breaking teams down without weakening our attack further by playing the likes of JOS or a blatantly out of form Giggs.

My team would be as follows: KK, WB, RF, NV, PE, Ronny, PS, Anderson, Nani, LS & WR. Here's hoping!

Wigan haven't won for 6 games now and have only scored 3 goals in those matches. Hesky is out so it's hard to see where a goal is coming from.
If the report can be taken at face value then O'Shea may have to play full back in place of Wes.
I can't see Fergie starting with two 'thirty something' central midfielders so my guess is that Anderson will start with Giggs as insurance on the bench.
Wigan don't concede many and will give a good account as always but United should win this comfortably.
Ronnie is showing a bit of form and with the Roon off the mark and Tevez & Saha chomping at the bit surely we must explode into life sooner rather than later.
4-0 United and Scholes to get into the Wigan half on at least 3 occasions! Ronnie to sport a plaster or maybe even dark glasses as he legs it up the line.

Even if VDS was fit I think it important for Kuszczak to play in games like this.
UNITED should be capable of out-scoring Wigan.
The Carling Cup has gone and if UNITED could do the double over Dynamo the last two remaing Euro group games should see Kuszczak and others given experience at difficult venues.

As long as we get 3 points another 1-0 will suffice .However I think United can put out a side to win more comfortable than that.I would play Anderson ,an ideal match in my opinion to do it

I think it's about time United broke the 2-goal barrier. If Portsmouth, Villa, Reading and Spurs could score so easily last weekend how come United haven't managed more than 1 per game since Everton last season (except Saha's penalty v Cjelski)? I think it will be 3-0 with 2 late goals.

Yup Stee you are right, in addition I feel many times a cross comes in from the wings and there's no one there to meet it.

I think Gary's abscence is telling though i liked the way Rio handled the team with the armband.

Now its time to see a glimpse of the real Anderson. Now I know its a bit early but what we have seen up to now is just Anderson playing with the unimpressive youngsters, who made him look bad; and even then he was our best player along with Pique. We saw how he livened up the last 10 minutes against Roma when he was playing around better players. If he starts against Wigan, Anderson will be playing with the big boys aka Ronaldo, Rooney Tevez etc and I believe, then, and only then when he is playing alongside world class players will we truly see the real Anderson. The Anderson that did so well at Porto having only played a handful of games for them. The Anderson that made Fergie cough up £18 million for him, and finally, the Anderson whose talent got him dubbed the 'next Ronaldinho'.

Will we see an attacking United at last?

I suspect Scholes in front of the back four with Nani (/Giggs), Tevez and CR feeding WR and Saha. With Tevez in the middle he will break up the Wigan attacks before they start – at least he can do Scholes’s tackling for him and he likes to play deep.

Can't see Anderson coming on until late.

I’m coming up for this one so lets hope for at least a 3 – 0 win!

its time for SAF to play all te strikers....i think paul scholes can provide the cover for defence...if we play tevez in an attacking mid possition....as kaka...for milan...that will only bring the best in tevez...
Starting line up:

GoalKeeper: Kuczszak

Defence: RB: Simpson, CB: Ferdinand, CB: Vidic, LB: Evra

Midfield: MR: Ronaldo, DM: Scholes, AM: Tevez, LM: Nani

Strikers: CF: Saha, CF: Rooney.

this team could win the game 4-0 for us...

I've got a nasty feeling this is the game where our luck will finally run out.
Let's face it, we won't have anyone to blame but ourselves although, as usual, we'll blame everyone but ourselves.
