Unlike previous years, Ferguson retained most of his young stars this season in an effort to avoid the problems he encountered last term when he ran out of bodies in the quest for honours.
But part of his thinking was based on a decent Carling Cup run offering the fringe men in his first-team squad some valuable experience and minutes on the pitch at a competitive level.
Malta forward Michael Mifsud derailed those hopes with his double strike for the Sky Blues as Coventry sent United spinning to their first defeat on home soil against lower league opposition since the humiliating three-goal loss to York City 12 years ago.
So, the likes of Phil Bardsley, Jonny Evans, Chris Eagles and Dong Fangzhou could find themselves playing their football elsewhere for a little while as Ferguson begins to plot another way forward.
"There is no point trying to find excuses for Wednesday night," said Ferguson. "It was a shock, which both surprised and disappointed me.
"The basic principle of any cup tie is to fight. And Coventry fought harder than we did.
"There is some cause for mitigation in the sense most of the players involved had not had enough football and it was also the first time they had played together as a team.
Criticised
"But maybe we have to review the situation now with regard to one or two of them going on loan."
Ferguson excused only Gerard Pique and Anderson, who has been heavily criticised in some quarters, from the debacle.
He also identified full-back Danny Simpson as someone he needs around Old Trafford, while Nani, John O'Shea and Tomasz Kuszczak are presumably safe from the anticipated cull.
"We looked upon the League Cup as an avenue for these players to play," reflected Ferguson.
"Now it has gone and with Gary Neville and Owen Hargreaves coming back we will have a good strong squad, so some of them need to go."
Ferguson has long since written off reserve team football as a suitable place for young players to gain experience, hence his extensive use of the loan system.
However, while Evans certainly has a long-term United future, Bardsley for one, and possibly Eagles as well, may find their careers are heading in another direction altogether.
Ferguson was quick to defend Anderson though. A £17million summer signing from FC Porto, the young Brazilian has struggled to adapt to the frenetic pace of the Premier League.
However, the United boss saw enough in Wednesday's game to be encouraged about his prospects.
"Anderson is coming on fine," he said. "That boy is a good player and I was pleased with him.
"He showed a bit of resolve on Wednesday when he and Pique were our best players."

these youngsters will become.
The one constant with young
players is their inconsistency. I saw Dong
play for China v USA in a losing course but Dong was the best player in the pitch
for a China team scattered
with veterens. Dong's size
and athletics told me at the
time he has a future at United, who knows? We need to give all these young lads a chance before critisizing
them so badly. A few of these lads will still be on
our books five years from now, of these few some will be good club backups, some
might become stars. I envy
you lot in M/C having the ability to see and scout for yourself these young players. As a kid myself in
Crumpsall I used to watch United in every home game
(me mum wouldn't let me go to away games) and when United were away we watched the reserve team. We saw George Best come up the ranks, he was sensational, no one would have said Best was destined for anything but stardom. Yet many of his reserve team mates also grew up into sold professionals, some became internationals. Give all these lads today a chance, you might be singing their name in a few years yourself.

The likes of Bardsley, Eagles and Martin are at the stage of their career now where it's poo or bust. They haven't made the grade and don't look like doing so.
Dong will need a bit of time, but it's very hard to see him breaking into Uniteds first team.
Simpson has a future, as do Evans and Pique, and Gibson aswell, but besides that I don't give the rest much chance.
4 goals in 5 games is it for Rossi in La Liga?
I know he wanted to leave himsef, but I don't see why he wasn't given his shot in the first team. We have first option if Villarreal decide to sell, but you can be sure it will be three times what we received for him.
We are in Arsenals shadow where youth management is concerned.

Dong just hasnt the pace ,or finishing qualities.Bardsley had a torrid time and was withdrawn ,and if Villa didnt want him then theres no future for him at OT.
Lee Martin again seemed to lack the ability to beat the full back.Eagles has had a few chances ,and certainly didnt enhance his reputation .As for the rest Anderson should enough skill ,and promise ,likewise Nani ,and both would fit in well with the first teamers.Pique can defitinely do better,as can Jonny Evans.
Simpson is a fine prospect, and will get better with more experience.Oshea is OK but not in midfield.Kucshack good back up till Foster is fit.Thats my assessment but others in the reserves awaiting their turn Brandy ,Hewson ,David Gray,Campbell. Its not quite as bad as it looks.

On the other hand I must congratulate my maltese counterpart Michael Mifsud, a United fan himself, for his performance. He always dreamt of playing for United.
Well seing the likes of Dong playing upfront for United, I think he would have made it too!

Fair enough, the likes of Dong, Bardsley and Pique aren't going to make it long term at the club, but its wrong to attack the club's youth system.
It never ceases to make me laugh that there are a lot of football fans out there who believe that United can produce a class of '92 every year!
I don't want to condescend fellow reds, but the most important word for ANY supporter is PERSPECTIVE.
Lets keep this result in perspective and move on-after all, its what the greatest club in the world was built on!
