The Reds' boss is aware of the behind-the-scenes bust-up between the Bulgarian striker and his Spurs boss Martin Jol. And the 26-year-old wasn't happy when his international team-mate and good friend Martin Petrov opted for City rather than Tottenham with Sven-Goran Eriksson wooing him to Sportcity with a £60,000-a-week package.
With Wayne Rooney, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo all out of action at the moment, United's strikepower is severely depleted especially as Guiseppe Rossi and Alan Smith have been sold.
The Reds have only scored three goals in their last nine competitive matches and are well off the pace with only two points from three Premier League games.
Berbatov, who is suffering with a groin injury, has been upset by events at White Hart Lane over the past few weeks and is still unsure Spurs can give him the Champions League football he craves for.
The Bulgarian's agent, Emil Dantchev, has since had to deny that Berbatov fell out with under-pressure manager Jol amid reports the Dutchman went to the board demanding the striker be sold.
Improved
But talks over a new, improved contract, which began near the end of last season, have stopped and only two months ago Berbatov revealed his dream of playing for United.
He said: "Of course I like Sir Alex's team. Their style is attacking and pleasant to watch and it coincides with my own style of playing football. Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney are fantastic players and that fast guy Cristiano Ronaldo on the right side is a magician with the ball. He plays football from another planet. Of course, it would be a pleasure for me to play with these guys. They simply know how to have fun on the pitch."
Berbatov scored 23 goals in his first season in English football having joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen for £10.9m. If Spurs resist United's overtures Fergie will switch his attention to another Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, Nicolas Anelka at Bolton or even check-out the availability of Newcastle duo Michael Owen and Obafemi Martens.
Meanwhile, Tomasz Kuszczak could find himself in the firing line for United on Sunday as Fergie sweats on a fitness report on Edwin van der Sar.
The veteran Dutchman failed to play any part in his country's friendly defeat to Switzerland in Geneva on Wednesday night after injuring his left foot in a training ground collision.
While the damage was not serious enough to force Van der Sar into an immediate flight back to the north west, he must be a major doubt for Spurs' visit to Old Trafford.
If Van der Sar does not make it, Kuszczak will step in for only his seventh league start since arriving from West Brom at the start of last term.
Would you like to see Berbatov at United? Have your say.

I can't see Tottenham wanting to sell Berbatov at any price though -- what kind of message would that send out to their fans? They'd have a riot on their hands.

Managers appreciate these type of strikers (who drop deep) because they are opponents find it difficult to deal with. If the defender follows the striker, there will be a gap in the defence and if not his team will be outnumbered in the middle of the field.

I think he's a great player but this is just paper talk, and nothing else.

Berbatov is excellent and has proved his worth in the Premiership already but is getting regular football at Tottenham.
Defoe is 4th Choice at Tottenham now, does he really want to swap one bench for another?
Martins & Owen, again proven records in the Premiership but getting regular 1st team football.
Anelka as above but in addition, he has also played for 3 of our fiercest rivals! Even if we forget the 'Incredible Sulk' tag because he has matured, can we really fully trust this mercenary's loyalty?
What I'm trying to say is that, if we hadn't signed Tevez, then sure, any of these strikers would be perfect but we have and the fact of the matter is with the Boy Wonder Rooney fit and well and after all the trouble we have gone through trying to get Tevez, do you really believe that these two are not going to be the spearhead of our attack?
Therefore anyone else coming in, will have to be content with a place on the bench and none of the above fit into that category.
What Manchester United needs is a promising young star to fill the void for now that knows his time will come in the future. Shame we lost Rossi really but undersand his reasons for moving on.
Perhaps a Short term loan, like the one agreed for Larsson last season is the answer again and it is more cost effective too!

let the current players settle - give saha something to fight for -save the money to buy micah richards next year!!
we will score goals - no problem - and we have a good chance with the CL this year
anyway, i cn't see spurs selling him

When talking about our strikers there's no point in counting Ole. If he gets fit and can contribute something then great, but i think for all intents and purposes he's finished, legend that he is.
Berbatov is a great player, no doubt, but having signed Tevez i dont know if he is now the kind of player we need. I think we'd be better getting someone in the Saha mould. Anelka is still the obvious choice for me. Maybe i'm wrong about Berbatov, but seems as though he'd be happier being able to drop a bit deeper. With Rooney, when fit, and Tevez, we have 2 players who will do that, not to mention Anderson and Scholes.
We'd do well to bare in mind the old saying about horses for courses

This is a club that is desperate to get into the big four, so why would they sell such a good player which would clearly weaken their side and give one of their main rivals a real boost?
They would go nuts and who could blame them.

May seem silly but what about a loan deal for Corradi from City? He plays well with his back to goal and can hold up the ball for natural finishers like Ryan Giggs and Owen Hargreaves.
What we don't want is for Spurs to get something out of the game or we're snookered for the title.
Captain Marvel's Shoulder, Salford (24/08/2007 at 10:55)
Also Fletcherm could then slot into his natural position at centre half.
Any thoughts on that please lads?
