But after suffering tendinitis in his knees that has delayed his competitive debut the gloss was taken off the £18m midfielder's bow by the Blues' shock derby victory.
However, the 26-year-old believes the Reds will bounce back after their shaky league start.
"To make my United debut in a Manchester derby was the biggest moment of my career so far," said Owen.
"But I was disappointed not to win. I was hoping we could obviously with his being my first game. I am sure there will be more wins in the future.
"It's great to have this opportunity to play with these players and for this fan support and for the coaching staff I am looking forward to the future."
Future
That immediate future sees Hargreaves and Co attempting to play early catch-up after the Reds lost a one-sided derby.
"We expected a lot more going into the game. When you look at the flow of the game we were completely in control and could have easily been in front early," Owen added.
"The goal happened when we were in control and it was a bit of a shock.
"City did the job of defending relatively well but we still had enough chances to definitely win the game.
"We need to score goals. The most important thing is to have those chances. We have made them but not utilised them. We could have scored one or two and they are things we have got to work on.
"We are missing Ronny (Cristiano Ronaldo) and Wazza (Wayne Rooney) and they are key players. We are going to miss those players at any time but we still had enough on the pitch to win the game.
"We still had a great team out there and we were comfortable. It is a shame that we only have two points from three matches because in those games we have pretty much dominated possession and could easily have won all three.
"We need to understand that we have played relatively well. We've played all this attractive football but not won games.
"We will get there. But we need to win games. That is the most important thing."
Do you think United will bounce back? Have your say.

We somehow have to get 6 points from the next two games. I can't believe that we can play as well as that again and get nothing?
Some are comparing our performances to the Arsenal side - I'll take that as a big compliment, just wait until we start scoring as well.
Hargreaves did well and slotted in as if he'd been here several seasons. Our midfield had a total grip on the game for 75 out of the 90 minutes of the match. They all played well.
I still can't believe we lost that one.

I'd go along with the feelings of many fans and say that we desperately need a striker. Saha is proving to be a liability. It's a real shame he's never fit. Anelka is scoring goals and has proven himself in the Premiership before, he wants Champions League football. Sometimes Fergie can be stubborn, however. I just hope he listens to reason before we've thrown too many points away!

He was the reason why City's forwards & midfielders weren't allowed to string two passes together - and apart from two long range shots (doh!)never got any where near United's box.

I really like the look a Scholes, Carrick and Hargreaves in midfield together. They all complement each other's abilities perfectly.
The composure and defensive positioning of Carrick, allied with the energy and grit of Hargreaves also means that Scholes barely had to make a tackle for 90 minutes. Which has got be a good thing!

Talking of Scholes, why was he playing so deeply with OH and MC in the team? This is the time to use him just outside the box rather than picking up from the back four.
Another good all round performance, so don’t panic folks. Nani is getting better and better – who said he hasn’t got a left foot? He obviously needs more experience but I see a gem in the making. The goals will come and I hope they start by the bucket next weekend. I just hope Tevez doesn’t run his legs off before Rooney gets fit.

Can someone have a word with Alias, though? He's been chief miserablist all week. Most unlike him.
Mind you, I think it was Dredstar who made the point that maybe Alias has a new Alias? Hmmmm...
