Talks between the Argentina striker's representatives and West Ham broke up last night without an agreement being reached.
It is understood there is a reasonable chance of a deal being done today. If an agreement is not reached today, Tevez's agent Kia Joorabchian and his company Media Sports Investment (MSI) will have to lodge all their papers with the High Court.
Once that is done, the dispute moves into another phase and court proceedings mean it much more unlikely that a settlement can be reached. West Ham are asking for several million pounds to release Tevez from his contract and allow his move to Manchester United to go through before the start of the season.
MSI are claiming they own the player and have lodged a £30m High Court lawsuit against the Hammers.
They claim West Ham should only be paid £100,000, as agreed in a controversial third-party agreement that the club ripped up in April.
Ripping up that agreement allowed West Ham to play Tevez in the final three games of last season - after the Premier League ruled that the original deal had broken their regulations - and he was instrumental in saving their Premier League status.

As far as I know The Premier League have approved a proposal put forward by West Ham, but the sticking point is MSI and JSI agreeing to it.
The argument is over how much compensation MSI and JSI pay West Ham to release Tevez registration. I think £2.75 million would be a fair amount for them to pay, as that would be half of what West Ham were fined in April.
Yes, West Ham broke Premier League rules, hence fined, but MSI and JSI also put forward the agreement, which I'm sure they knew broke the rules too, so as stated, a fair compromise would be to split the amount West Ham were fined, and everyone moves on.
However, in the contract drawn up in December, MSI and JSI state that they only have to pay West Ham £100,000.
The papers have to be submitted to the High Court after today, so I'm sure both sides have dragged out negotiations until the last day, hoping either side cracks under the pressure.
Nobody wants to go to court, because you coud lose everything there, no matter how strong a case you may think you have, so I'm confident a compromise will finally be reached today, and matter can be put to bed.
However, The Hills do have Eyes, and no doubt Sheffield United are waiting to pounce.

All the rumours I've heard (alright, the one rumour I've heard) is that it will be done today, as tomorrow is the deadline for submitting all papers to the court. Apparently a deal has been agreed (with the PL's blessing) that only needs formal PL ratification, which will happen today. If it happens, you heard it here first. If it doesn't, don't shoot the piano player, it was only a rumour...

Same rules apply about shooting the piano-player (I always thought it was the messenger who got shot anyway?)
